    Masala dosa

As I am always looking for a passable Indian in Berlin, I came upon this place. They specialise in Tamil cuisine and as I was told by the staff, they use all fresh herbs and spices which they grind themselves. They also do not cater to the dumbing down of flavours, that said, their dishes are definitely more subtle in flavour. They will make things spicy if that's what the recipe calls for though. I have tried two lunch specials and two dishes from the normal menu. The lunch specials are served with a lentil soup, salad and then the main dish with rice. I had chicken with mushroom curry (it was spicy enough but a bit weak on flavour but okay), then I had the lamb curry which was also nice but very mild in the spices area. Both were approx. 5€ From the normal menu, I tried their Masala Dosai, I believe it was 6,80€. The "pancake" was a golden brown but not crispy so was easier to eat than most other Dosas I have eaten in the past. The potato curry filling was very nice as was the sambal and coconut chutney. Yesterday, I had the lamb Kottu, 7,50€ (I broke the rules and went over budget). It is strips of "pancake" fried with herbs, spices, egg and meat or veggie. They made it on the spicy side. I would say it was medium but I could imagine some friends of mine would have said it was quite spicy... The service is super friendly and it's nice to find somewhere close to home that doesn't cost an arm and a leg for decent food.

Nothing good about this restaurant. Its no way near south indian or srilankan cuisine. It is run by bangladesh establishment, then they need to atleast say it as much and not fool people. On enquiring, the chef isnt from srilanka either. They are doing disservice to the wonderful bangla and srilankan cuisine with this sham. I ordered vada (served with half grated cocunut chutney and vada made with broken wheat or something to that effect. I asked for sambar as an extra, that had lentil soup floating on top of the half cooked lentils), couple of soups (fully loaded with canned coconut milk and tasted as artificial as it can get), the jaffna jackfruit dish was a disaster with canned tomato puree, the kothu kari (shredded parotta) was made from the weirdest assortment of vegetables (who puts cabbage, aubergines and zucchini in this dish?? ) I wouldn't strongly advise people to stay off, if one is looking for any reasonable south indian fare or the otherwise superb srilankan food. The service was very good though, and i feel for the staff over there, who could have maintained a loyal clientele if only the chef made some real food.

My first night in Berlin came after a marathon transatlantic journey from San Francisco, so I was…read morein no mood to explore what I initially saw as a labyrinth metro system. Luckily I was staying in the somewhat stylish albeit quiet Charlottenburg district. Dining choices were either exorbitant or nonexistent at 8PM, but now that Yelp is in Germany, I was able to find Manjurani just a few doors down from Hotel Otto on Knesebeckstrasse. Indian food in Germany? Fine by me since I really didn't come to Berlin for the local food anyway. It turned out to be a surprisingly satisfying Indian restaurant with reasonable prices. The German touch came in the form of the beer garden picnic benches in front where naturally all the youth gravitated. Otherwise the interior looked like a Pier One fire sale with lots of silken, jewel-colored throw pillows and wall hangings. The waiter is fluent in several languages from what I could hear, and fortunate for me, English is one of them. They offer a robust menu heavily in need of translation, although I went with two foolproof dishes I would have ordered anywhere. The Tandoori Chicken (6.90 Euros) came out sizzling hot on an iron pan covered in aluminum foil (see photo). It was quite tender with plenty of peppers. The standout, however, was the Shahi (Lamb) Korma (8.90 Euros), which came with generous chunks of meat swimming in a pool of a thick coconut sauce (see photo). The two dishes came with a side salad that I had never seen in an Indian restaurant - a cole slaw-type concoction heavy with yellow peppers, onions, and a runny mayo-like sauce (see photo). Sue me, I liked it. Actually I liked the dinner enough to join the other two Yelpers in Manjurani's support camp. FOOD - 4 stars...hearty, tasty Indian food can be found in Berlin AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...who's sari now? SERVICE - 4 stars...treated me like one classy tourist TOTAL - 4 stars...namaste, Berlin!
