Amalgamated has very good selection. The clothes, while old, are generally in very good condition. Obviously, there are going to be some holes/wear/etc in clothing from decades ago. There is also great selection. I hate when I go into a "vintage" store and majority of its stock is clothing from the 80s. I guess that's technically vintage, but not exactly what I'm looking for! Besides clothing (both men and women's), they have a lot of accessories, jewelry, and paper goods, including (fashion) magazines and greeting cards. It's nice to just flip through the greeting cards, especially because a lot of them have writing and notes in them from years ago. What pleased me was the fact that they had a large selection of locally-made pomades. If you're a Murray's guy, you'll definitely like the selection of pomades here. They all smell so good, too! I didn't buy any, but I am definitely planning to once my pomade backstock runs low. You can also sample them if you like. The pricing here is iffy for me. Some things, I feel like are a very good deal. Like you can get a cute vintage dress for less than a new one at a department store. On the other hand, they have an entire rack of "ugly Christmas sweaters" and all of them are around $200. I'm not an expert on vintage clothing, though, so I can't really say how the pricing works. I'll trust the expert who's running the shop and purchase what I think is a deal. Overall, though, this is a great find.They seem to rotate their stock quite frequently. (I like how the display mannequins outside practically change on a daily basis.) Even if you're not looking for anything in particular, it's worth a stop in just to look in and get a glimpse into a time passed. read more

THIS STORE ROCKS VINTAGE LIKE ITS NEW! I absolutely love this store! I came into this store by chance, walking down the avenue one day, and happened in to the store...I tried on a vintage pair of shoes that ended up fitting perfectly and I have been SOLD ever since! I have bought numerous shoes, dresses, and HATS! Shelley and all of her staff are super helpful, grabbing dressing and shoes to help try on, just let them know what you are looking for and they are more than happy to help! I love pairing old vintage with new fashion and amalgamated has the absolute best selection in the area BY far and I shop around....so yeah, I guess some folks have had a bad a experience, I find that really weird, I have been in their over 20-30 times and not once have I had a bad experience...but I talk to people and let them know what I need, if you don't ask, you can't be helped:) LOVE this STORE!! read more

Absolutely thrilled with the knowledge, generosity, and overall kindness that the employees exhibit at Amalgamated! I have been going to the store for a little over a year now, and come home with great finds/experiences every time. If you are the type of shopper that loves to get lost and spend time amongst the goods in a store, this place is for you. Otherwise, you plan ahead and check out the frequently updated Instagram page to keep up with what is new in the store. The staff is incredibly helpful and are more than willing to outfit you for a theme-party, play, or an everyday wardrobe. If they do not have specifically what you are looking for (as some types of clothing are seasonal), they can give you a heads up when things are coming in via Instagram or email. What a treasure! Want a day that will be memorable, head to Amalgamated and Shelly White is the owner and is an expert on all things vintage. She has an encyclopedic memory of fashion, trends, styles and has outfitted the cast of 30 Rock and Boardwalk Empire. Her shop is not a dusty collection of castaway clothing but a carefully curated museum of fashion with the bulk comprising the era's from the 1920s to 1970s. More interesting may be that there are many items in her store that have never even been sold and are in original packaging....finds and back stock found in warehouses long forgotten. From hand laced couture dresses from the 20s, to beaded ball gowns of the 30s, to cute aprons from the 1940s to sun dresses from the 1950s there is a look for every taste. Her clothing is accompanied by vintage shoes, hats, purses and accessories. The men are not left out in this store either so bring your guy! This store is right in Del Ray and has been written up in The Washington Post. Shelly is a cunning curator and there is no "junk" in this store. This is the best vintage store on the east coast - as an avid collector and wearer of 20's, 30's, and 40's clothing, this place is a dream come true and one of the few brick and mortar stores that even carry these eras of clothing anymore, much less exclusively carry these eras (plus 1950's). I am amazed that anyone could leave a negative review (especially the person who didn't even go into the store???), but I will say that the owner is a wonderful, genuine, caring person who always remembers my name when I come in, even though I can only make it to the store 2-3 times a year because I live out of state - we are chatty because we have a mutual interest of vintage clothing. There are price tags on the clothing designating size in measurements because vintage clothing does not correlate to modern sizing and is often homemade, without any labels. If there happens to not be a price tag, I need only ask. Visiting this store is a highlight of my existence on earth, I highly recommend a visit if you love wearing vintage clothing! read more

This hidden gem is one of my favorite consignment shops in the DC area. Found a dress for a Old Hollywood Glamour theme ball and the belt... and a tie for my husband. I was so in love, and the people who work there are very helpful and very very very nice! I felt very welcomed! They do have a large quantity of men's clothes too, if you need a nice sport coat or suit jacket or pretty much anything... GO THERE! I love them! Great everything!!! I was blown away by Amalgamated Costume. I called ahead and asked if they had a used, Renaissance costume, and said that I was on a budget and didn't have a lot of money. They sent me an email and asked me to come in on a Saturday morning, and they had a beautiful Renaissance style coat waiting for me to try on at the counter when I arrived. The coat was lined, and made of heavy black velvet with silver brocade. The price? A princely sum of $75. Everyone tells me, "It was a steal!" I love this place and would recommend it to anyone. Okay, Ive only been once, about a year ago but I remember being fairly blown away and yes, I'm an oldschool vintage guy. I walked out with a beautiful men's straw fedora. I am overdue for a visit and even though I am a bit of a cheapskate (aren't most vintage hunters?), I know I will walk out with a purchase. The merchandise is just top quality stuff that you can't find just anywhere. On top of that their Facebook page is fun, lots of great old photos showing fashion from back in the day when people knew how to dress! I went in here one weekday morning and enjoyed looking at all the things but got puzzled by the lack of price labels or not being able to find them or not being able to understand the handwriting so it was not as useful a visit as it should have been for a look around. Best, best, best vintage spot in the DMV area. You'll find tons of goodies from the late 1800s to the mid 1900s and it's absolutely a dream. The music is always spot on and the finds are always unique and in wonderful condition. Shelley is a sweetheart and her eye for vintage is unparalleled. Stealing from Yelp, this is "as good as it gets." As I wrote on Amalgamated's Facebook page (because I love them so much!), the selection is well-curated and deserving of my constant visits. I will go here until my wallet runs dry because I know I can always find a gorgeous pin or necklace or hat here. Their focus is turn of the century to early seventies clothing and accessories. According to the staff, they mainly carry Mad Menesque items, though they will have some stuff from the later '60s to '70s here and there. In addition to clothing and accessories, they also carry old magazines, postcards, books, and countless other paraphernalia from the eras mentioned above. The clothing may be a tad pricey for some, but the jewelry and other accessories can be a real steal. I got a gold clutch (circa 1950s), plastic bead necklace and Victorian age necklace for around 40 bucks! What sets this place apart from other vintage stores is the amazing selection. It's tasteful, comprehensive and well-organized. No 'digging through junk" here. Someone did that already and is only showing you the best and brightest. Interestingly, Amalgamated is frequented by big names in fashion and film who are in need of inspiration. If it's attractive enough to Anthropologie and the like then it's great by me. I've been to many, many vintage clothing stores and have never seen one as good as this. Think shopping the closets of the Mad Men cast....yes it is that good. From baby clothes to vintage dresses to mens suits, it has it all and the shoes are amazing. If you are looking for a unique dress for a wedding or party or want a fun sweater or top, you have to stop by and take a look. The store seems to have the perfect amount of items and while there are clearly treasures to be found, there is no digging through bins of old stuff to find the rare item.
