I don't remember when I started going to Amadeus on Wednesdays, Miércoles de Bohemia (which loosely translates to Bohemian Wednesdays)... I know it was many years ago... and especially before I left the island and moved to Florida. I grew up listening to old songs... romantic and pathetic... mostly about unrequited love and needing someone who does not even know you exist...begging for very little... Old songs of Sandro de America, José José, Roberto Carlos, Pedro Flores, Rafael, Sylvia Rexach... songs about longing... and then the idea of linking that to karaoke with a live piano caressed by the love of Martin.... Uff! that just was too tempting. A perfectly nestled spot in La Chardón with private parking and security... an older crowd of professional people, older than Reggaetón, who respected my space and acted accordingly. How could I not love it? How could I not return to it over and over? Even when I dislike becoming predictable... I did.
So I went back one more time... after two years of exile... to find some of the usuals... and the ridiculous dream became true to encounter Cucco Peña (one of Puerto Rico's top composer and singers and producers and you-name-it there once more.) He sang to me... "Amnesia" and I almost diluted myself into the air... melted and diffused into nothingness.
Amadeus remains as beautiful. Wednesdays are filled with intention and hope. Famous singers gather and drink and feel at home and sing for you or the person who requests it as if friends... I have shared space and time with Cucco, Leonel Bacaro, Carlos de la Cima (who my eldest sister had a huge crush on when we were growing up,) Danny Rivera, Las gemelas Zeny y Zory (las Beveraggi), Lou Briel, Alberto Carrión and Antonio Barasorda. Unbelievable... for the price of my drinks and as if in my own living room. Every time the door opens one must gasp and wish one them does walk in... and often... they do!
The menu has changed and it has turned more affordable... especially at lunch... I did not go during lunch as the Bohemian Night begins at seven... do make a reservation if you want a table that can oversee the Piano... if not... get there early because there will be a show no matter what. Some of the usual Karaoke singers are simply amazing. Picó is a shy talented singer and knows many, many songs you might request. Martin also knows many songs in English. Handsome and attentive, he will try to please you. There is a very affordable wine list... as well as cocktails... my only disagreement is the choice of Whiskeys... but I can be high maintenance and silly that way... which has nothing to do with Tony's (the owner's) choices.
I enjoyed the Sancocho incredibly. It was an unexpected menu surprise for me... and honestly, today, right now, I still crave it. The risotto was lovely as well as the plate of diverse appetizers... The food is very good, but the ambiance does it all... a certain kind of magic lacking mostly everywhere... a place to remember yourself singing, and hoping and dreaming, and missing and longing... but, not lonely... everyone sings along and you know... you know you are not the only one who felt like that. read more
