I've visited the spa several times and seen Brandon and had a good experience. This appointment, I saw Rebecca. I am deeply disturbed by my recent visit to this spa. During what was supposed to be a relaxing treatment, the therapist made an unsolicited and completely inappropriate claim that my father's cancer had returned and that he had six months to live. This was not only medically unfounded, but also deeply traumatic and unprofessional. Spa services are meant to provide peace and healing--not fear and emotional distress. Diagnosing or making predictions about someone's health, especially in such a serious and personal way, is entirely out of bounds and unethical for any spa professional. I just had the best massage that I have ever had - and I have been getting massages for 40 years! Rebecca at Ama Spa in Surf City, NC is AMAZING. Every therapist says that they can work out your problem areas and fix what ails you, however, Rebecca is the first therapist that has actually delivered. I cannot recommend this business. Rebecca talked through the entire massage. It was a very uncomfortable situation. Her touch was too strong, painful, and left bruises. I asked for her to stop and use less pressure but she only moved to a different body area and disregarded my request. I needed assistance for my back but this was not a focus. Almost the entire time was on my neck and shoulders and the pain was intense at times. As you can see from my photos, her fingers left bruises on my right arm. This was NOT a good massage and not relaxing. Also, I am NOT on any medications to cause increased risk of bruising. read more

Brandon does not do the stomach portion of a lymphatic massage on females because he is not professional enough to do so. Rebecca was very late and said she was eating. She then poked my chest when talking about where my heart was and at one point put her head on my stomach while laughing. When I voiced my concern, they denied it was possible and are trying to quiet me. I urge anyone else with issues to also file a formal complaint. read more

I'm giving two stars vs one in gratitude to the front desk and to Daniel, my masseuse. Rebecca, the owner and service provider is homophobic. Period. While in her care and on her table she had no problem telling me explicitly that she didn't believe in the LGBTQ community. As I am a member of that community, I took extreme offense. I powered through the service and visit, tipped well and will not be returning. After reading further reviews, I realize I should have never supported this spa. The way the owner responds in some of these reviews from clients/customers is very reflective of the person she is. Rebecca did provide good body work. I enjoyed a lymphatic massage and some upper body deep tissue work at Ama while on vacation. The receptionist and my massage therapist were friendly and made me feel comfortable right away. I started my appointment in a dimly lit waiting area, which immediately put my mind in relaxation mode. My husband had no problem waiting at one of the 3 or 4 bars next door while I was at my appointment. My massage therapist was very knowledgable and explained some interesting things about my specific concerns, leaving me with some notes that I could use to research later. Next time we're visiting Topsail Island I'll definitely be booking another treatment for myself at Ama! read more

Unfortunately, I would not recommend this business. I was unable to relax during my massage and found the business practices to be unprofessional. The owner blatantly admitted she gets bad reviews removed. Had I had known this beforehand maybe I would have chosen another place with genuinely good reviews. I left bruised and went home very upset that I had spent so much money to leave in pain. It took two days for my arms to feel better from my deeply bruised muscles. The therapist talked during my entire session which didn't create a relaxing atmosphere. The lady at the front desk was nice however. I've been an Ama Spa client for about 7 months now and had my first facial there in October 2021. I've had facials before but this was review worthy! The spa is boutique like, very serene and clean. Their management and staff are always pleasant and accommodating. My provider's in-depth knowledge on cellular structure and their product line was impressive. They assessed my skin, listened to my concerns and custom crafted a treatment tailored for me. I knew I was in the right hands. My facial experience and the technique were AMAZING and quality of service was top notch. My mother and I had our first experience today here. My mother was visiting from out of town and we wanted to relax and have some girl time. We did a 60 min relaxation massage with Rebecca and Brandon who were both really great! Brandon got out knots in my shoulders and neck I didn't even know I had! I felt like weight was lifted off my shoulders leaving the spa. The spa is clean and cute! They have a lot of different services to choose from! I will definitely come back to try some. Pure Gold!!! I have spent months in physical therapy, drs offices and messages trying to figure out how to heal my sharp lower back pains. They were debilitating and not getting any better no matter what I tried. Then I found Rebecca at Ama Spa. I came in for a tweaked neck and never mentioned my lower back as I had deemed it useless and unfixable by then. Not only did I walk out of there with a relaxed neck but she intuitively zeroed I'm on my lower back and the cause of the pain. She found it and healed me in minuets! I've never been more grateful and blessed to have found her and her talent. She truly is there for you, explaining what causes the pain and how she's fixing it. So incredibly gifted. Being new the area I was looking for a nice place for facials, waxing, massages etc..after my first (and last) visit, having a less than satisfactory experience, I reached out to management..First off it takes a lot for me to complain to a company, but being in the service industry for several years I know that customer feedback is valued. When expressing that I was unsatisfied, and I was blunt that this was the worst experience I had with this particular service(I've had this service done several times) ..the response from management was extremely unprofessional and in a argumentative manor. I'm amending that to four stars based on: 1) A call I received from Misty and 2) Being reminded how harshly judgemental I tend to be.. This place is a total gem. To say it is just luxurious seems a clear understatement. I felt like I was transported to other exotic locales such as Sedona, Budapest, and Istanbul. I was very disappointed with the lack of service provide by Rebecca. I bought this as a gift for someone. The appointment was scheduled for 3p, she called and pushed it to 3:30. She arrived late and disheveled, only started at 4p. She proceeded to take a smoke break, and made the room smell like a cheap Las Vegas casino. Part of going to a spa is to have a harmonious atmosphere that is pleasing to all your senses. The experience worsened. Rebecca started going off on a rant about her personal political beliefs. This was supposed to be relaxing and the service agreed upon was not that. She exposed my guest to a hostile and stressful environment. The guest left immediately and I asked for my money back - she refused. She basically stole my money because I was unhappy with the environment she created and Rebecca was too arrogant to admit her unprofessional behavior. Her business practices are unethical. My husband and children sent me here for my birthday and it was a real treat. The attention to detail for a calming and relaxing experience is on point. Miss Rebecca created a mixture of essential oils that was just divine and complimented the body scrub wonderfully. The massage was one of the best I've had. Extremely disappointed I booked my appointment online this morning was even sent a confirmation text went in for my appointment and was pulled up in the computer as having a appointment scheduled but then told I'm sorry not sure what happened with the online system it scheduled your appointment but we only have 3 therapists and they are all booked. Yes I do understand in the world of technology things happen but as a business owner I would have at least offered something perhaps a future discount. This was my second bad experience with this spa. The first time was right after they opened received a manicure that cost me a fortune and chipped within two days. I guess they use something that is good for the environment which is great unless it doesn't work. The problem Is they don't mention this when you call them to book, they don't tell you until you get there. $85 dollars later and only stayed on two days before chipping. They had just open so I figured maybe it was because they were brand new thought I give them another shot. So I made an appointment for today to get a massage my appointment was at 2:30 I arrived at 2 o'clock hoping to relax a little bit beforehand. The door was locked with a note on the door that the person stepped away from the counter to please give them a call and they will unlock the door. I called several times and they didn't show up to unlock the door until 2:32 . The owner showed up to unlock the spa and says she still has someone with her. She then says I'm going to be another 10 more minutes with her current client. She asked me if I wanted to come on in and wait. Maybe it's just me , but I'm accustomed to arriving at a spa and relaxing before I get my massage , maybe sipping some water. It wasn't the experience at all you expect. Very unprofessional way to run a business. She told me then she was short staffed but she made the appointment today so don't make the appointment if you're shortstaffed.
