Good store. However, the heavy set, older blond woman behind the counter completely ruined the experience. She was nasty, rude and just unpleasant. A nice store with lots of interesting items deserves to have someone who is welcoming and pleasant. This person is the opposite of of that. Because of her I do not plan to visit this establishment again. I'd advise anyone else planning on visiting Stokes to avoid her and to get someone else to help you. Went in for leather suspenders (where can you find those locally?) and came out with a new leather jacket and the best leather cleaner/softener you'll ever find. We could have gone to the Harley store and spent twice the money but, would not be any more satisfied than we are! I disliked this place, but for a more relevant, less silly reason than the city folk complaining about confederate flags and COVID masks: I was in here with a group of my young adult friends, and we were having a good time trying on the hats. A friend and I had already decided to buy some cool metal wall signs we saw when we walked in, and we both were seriously considering buying a hat as well, when the proprietor walked up and said "so are we actually looking to buy a hat? Cause I'll tell you what we're not gonna be doing today is goofing around just trying them on." Everything southern you can think of. Guns, knives, and Confederate flags. They put the "general" in "general store." Owner didn't ask us if we needed help but he seemed friendly. I got what I needed and can chalk up this visit to an authentic southern business. read more

Chock full of stuff this store merits a stop if in the area. It is right in historic downtown and sits next to a nice creek. The store has both men and women's clothes and shoes, however, this store seems more aimed at men. There are lots of boots and jeans for sale. Nice general store and with a huge selection of reasonably priced walking/hiking shoes and boots. Good source for guns and knives and some ammo. The staff was friendly and assisted with locating shoes in my size. Some really nice light-weight coats at good prices. Lots of jeans and tops. Great selection of socks, decently priced. Does not have the usual penny candy / soft drinks / snacks I associate with general stores where I grew up. Worth a visit. read more

Everything southern you can think of to include blatant racism exhibited by the shopkeepers. I have enjoyed shopping at stokes since I was a teenager and have usually been greeted with hospitality. This time however, my partner and I weren't certain if the retail workers are just grouchy or discriminatory towards Latinos. read more

My fiancee and I went to Stokes this past Sunday. None of the employees or customers were wearing a mask. This is during a pandemic and mask wearing is mandatory. I asked the lady behind the counter why no mask? She was getting very agitated and yelled something about the disabled veterans act. I didn't understand if this meant her and her employees were disabled. She was ringing us up and my fiancee told her she only rang up one hat. She continued to stare at me and didn't seem to care. I told her that I was going to contact the health department and file a complaint. She said the F word and said she was going to call the cops. Not sure how this place stays in business when you have no idea how to be professional. Most businesses during this pandemic are very appreciative of any business they are getting. While doing the 2011 Dukes of Hazzard reunion in Sperryville, Va., we stayed within walking distance of Stokes General Store. We stopped in one Sat. evening, purchased a logo shirt and some gun cleaning products. We were greeted with friendly service, a hand shake and a smile. My Husband is almost impossible to buy shoes for - Stokes General Store was recommended by a coworker - and within 10 minutes of entering the store my Husband found the perfect pair!
