We had a wonderful dinner at this restaurant last night. The food was excellent--creative, flavorful, and full of interesting combinations that made the meal memorable. The waitstaff were friendly, attentive, and professional throughout the evening. They made us feel welcome and took great care of our table. My only real complaint was the noise level. There was a musician performing in the bar area, which is a nice touch in theory. We were fortunately seated a good distance away in the dining room, which was a relief at first. However, as our dinner went on, the music became significantly louder, making it difficult to hold a normal conversation across the table. For a dining experience, it would be great if the restaurant considered volume control or acoustics so that guests can still enjoy their meal and chat comfortably. Everything was very good - from our Servers to the shared appetizers to the dessert. There were 4 of us and we all enjoyed our selections. We actually were able to the share the Mussel appetizer which gave each of us a nice portion of the starter. It was fun to try the Beer Flights because 2 of us got them, picking different ones, so we got to sample various tastes. Entrees ran from the giant-sized burger, to the equally large and perfectly cooked Pork Chop. The Lamb Chops were delicious and again perfectly cooked. The sides were very very good. While on a girls trip, stopped in for brunch and was not disappointed. The decor is tasteful and with natural light, makes the area warm and inviting. The service was by far top-notch. The staff was friendly, attentive and very knowledgeable. The server even gave us recommendations of what to do in the area since we were from out of town. The brunch menu at Alter House has a variety of choices, with the eggs benedict having perfectly poached eggs and served with a wonderful hollandaise and ham. The fried chicken sandwich was on the larger side, but was perfectly crunchy. There was also a wide selection of brunch cocktails, including a mimosa tower which is perfect for a large group, and other unique house made concoctions. I came here last night for New Years Eve (actually, celebrating a birthday), and was super impressed! I definitely needed reservations-- not sure if it was just because it was a holiday weekend, but I suspect this place is packed on the regular because it's pretty nice. Ambiance was on point. Lovely greenery wall, light wood accents, soft lighting, tasteful Christmas decorations. Tables were far enough apart that you don't feel like you're right on top of each other. Because it was NYE, there was a live acoustic guitar player, complimentary champagne, and a free photo booth, which were all unexpected and delightful surprises! Even without those wonderful extras, we would have had a great time. I went for the shrimp and potato ravioli (which had some chunks of lobster in the sauce) my mom had the halibut and a soup. Everything was cooked wonderfully and well balanced. Portions are modest but the food is filling and meant to be savored rather than gorged on. The quality of the cooking, presentation, and the freshness of ingredients certainly merits the price. I had been hoping to try the crab and brie fries but they didn't seem to be on the menu (maybe not the holiday menu, or maybe they're not on it anymore) but if they still have them I would return to try those too because I'm sure they're rocking. Service was phenomenal. Overall, a really lovely place and definitely worth a visit if you're looking for somewhere upscale yet warm and welcoming to dine in the Poconos! read more

We sat at the bar and received exemplary service from Andrew who addressed all off our questions with patience and aplomb. He explained how they are known for their pork chop dish. We ordered it and it was dynamite. Paired with slaw with bacon bits and egg noodles, the thick chop was cooked perfectly with a honey bourbon sauce on the side. Service was 10/10. Waiter was genuine and very helpful. Food and drinks were really good but grossly over priced. If you're a millionaire, trying to impress a new date, or somebody who likes pretending that you're rich, this is the place to go. Very small portions! My fiancé and I are both still very hungry after eating at the alter house. Yet we managed to rack up a $150 bill! Two drinks and two entrees and a slice of cheese cake. If I could do it over I'd go to a different local spot with a more humble atmosphere and a good bang for your buck. Somewhere where I can spend $60-$100 bucks, get full, catch a buzz, and have some food to take home. Decent spot if you're into that kind of "fancy shmancy" thing but def not for me! My fiance and I came to visit Alter House after hiking in the area. We were excited to visit and support a farm-to-table, as sustainability is of utmost importance to both of us. First off for covid era - we felt very safe with their protocols and distancing. The table was disinfected prior to our seating, and all staff had a face shield. Our server was very friendly and personable, and continued to follow up with us at appropriate times for refills on alcohol and water. My favorite thing is probably their beer list! Absolutely amazing local beers, all drafts at $6. The flatbread was the best dish of the night, you could have fooled both my fiance in I that the crust was cauliflower! The tomatoes were so fresh, summery and perfect. Both of our entrees were a bit disappointing. Overall we found both of them to be a bit bland. As for my chicken sandwich - I wanted to love it, but I didn't due to the lack of flavor. But the chicken itself was absolutely so tender, and fresh. His pasta tasted mostly of lemon and the flavors weren't cohesive or married, but the fettuccine itself was well made and had a nice texture. I don't have enough time in my day to express how much we love Alter House! My husband and I come here for every single date night and really any chance we can get because it's our absolute favorite. The food is always a 10/10 (the crab and brie fries are a non negotiable when we visit) and I could rave about that for the entirety of this review but the drinks are always impeccable. Home made syrups, self crafted recipes and ingredients used from local farms, it just doesn't get any better than that. The staff is always incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and overall enjoyable to be around and the ambiance in the restaurant itself is wonderful. I celebrated my birthday w/ my two sons, both who live out of town and we had an early reservation at the Alter House, 5:00 hoping to miss the Sat. night crowd. One son had never been there. Our Server, Beck, was amazing. Wonderful response to questions, was perfect in everything she did, a real pleasure. We ordered most of the "specials", some for the table, and our own entres. The beet salad, scallop dish, roasted brussell sprouts were absolutely wonderful. We each had a cocktail, then wine and all was perfect. Crowd filled up, very busy but we lacked for nothing. Then the bill. $145.00 I think and my son questioned the server re: an extra charge of $8.75? She said something about "overhead charge"? She asked for the Manager to explain. We saw him walking towards us, obviously angry, face stern. He explained it was to cover an "overhead" expense the Restaurant had to pay. One of us suggested it would be less insulting to increase the prices of the menu items rather than show this extra charge for "overhead". He literally threw a $10.00 bill at my son and stalked off. Not a good show at all. This should be a 5 star review. His behavior took away a star. He looked very young. Someone should should teach him customer service. All was perfect, until the final moment. The food was exceptional. The first time I had a cart flavorful salmon. My wife enjoyed a deconstructed chicken parmigiana. The second time my wife stayed with her chicken dish. My wife, also a doctor, and I made a reservation to go to Alter House. The restaurant has been open for some time. We decided to try it last night, January 19, 2023. We were seated within a minute of the reservation time. Over the next 20 minutes, three servers, the hostess, and the food delivery person saw us and noticed that we have not been given water. They saw that we had closed our menus and had decided what we wanted. However, no one came to wait on us. In fact, several of the servers acted like we were beneath them. The last time I felt that way was when my family and I were in Ireland. At one of the restaurants in Ireland, they loved us until they heard our American accents. Then they looked and treated us like the dirt on their shoes. Our treatment from the staff at Alter House was similar. My wife and I think it is because we were wearing jeans, and they thought we did not have the money to dine there. After we left, the owner did call us. However, we politely refused to go back. We will probably not return. From there, we went to Olive Garden. The server was so amazing (Alana) that we left her a tip that was a little more than 100% of the bill amount. read more

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Alter House! This was my go spot for happy hour drinks, Sunday brunch, girls nights and dinner dates. I miss it so much since moving. The staff was always so friendly and welcoming, the atmosphere was calming and trendy and the live music was the cherry on top when dining indoors or outdoors. Let's talk about the food...SO fresh and SO delicious. The seasonal menu for both food and drinks was always something I looked forward to. The presentation of the food also says so much about the quality ingredients used and attentive chefs here. One of my favorite dishes is the pork chop dinner. I also enjoyed the smash patty burger, charcuterie board and crab and Brie fries on many occasions. I also recommend the featured flatbread and pasta dishes!
