When I moved back to Boston a few years back after spending a decade on the west coast, I was saddened to hear my long-time supplier of plasticy goodness, Commercial Plastics in Somerville, had closed their doors. I was looking for a piece of 1/8" plexi for a project and stopped in at the glass shop down the street from my house and almost went into heart failure at the price they wanted to charge me ($20/sq ft!) After recovering, I went home and poked around on the web until I found Altec's site. I was initially put-off by their flash website, I hate flash websites, but decided to stop in and check them out. They have a production shop on the ground floor that is closed off and the office is on the 2nd floor. I went up and talked to one of the guys in the office and the price he quoted me was 1/8th what my local glass shop wanted and cheaper than the mail order retailers I checked with. The price was so good, I ordered two pieces so I would have a spare. I didn't need the plexi immediately so I told them I'd be back Monday to pick up the order and walked out a happy customer. These guys are insanely helpful and extremly capable. They turned a project for me in 24 hrs that included custom drilled holes and cleaned edges on some nice thick frosted plexi. Great quality...reasonable prices and a lot in stock! they can also do custom orders of some pretty cool materials. and can handle some outrageous projects. We had to get sheets of acrylic for a project, and they were fast courteous and even cut us the right sheets on demand. We were there for 15 minutes max. Great service! read more

I want to say one word to you, just one word: Plastics! Most of y'all will probably come for the acrylic sheets upstairs but they also have a basement cutoff pile you have to ask about with all the more exotic stuff--I've come looking for PVC sheet, teflon, and Delrin, and never left unsatisfied. Prices vary widely from "ridiculous deal" to "market price" but with no shipping costs I've always preferred coming here to online. read more

I gave Altec another shot at a small job and worked with Dan again. I found him to be responsive and helpful. Altec ultimately didn't get the job because I got a better price somewhere else, but I wouldn't hesitate to let them bid on another job. I wish that I lived close enough to actually see samples of various options and that may have helped to justify the price difference, but I live far away so it's really about price, speed, and quality (I want them all and it usually works out that way.) Three stars is defined by Yelp as "A-OK" and I guess that's about right since I'd be glad to let them bid on future jobs. read more

If you need ANY plastics or even if you just want to talk to the nicest people in all of Boston, this is the place to go. I went into their building (which happens to be extremely welcoming and organised) with a rough idea of what i wanted and a previous quote from them. Far from being money grabbers they actually told me i could have something similar to what i wanted for.... a quarter of the price!!! It was a plexiglass box that fit my dimensions and that someone else had ordered and then decided they didn't want. Dan spent over 30 minutes with me discussing the logistics of my project and telling me what i could do myself and what they needed to do with their machinery. We measured and speculated and agreed. I am expecting my complicated box to be completed this week. I am 100% happy with the price, service, speed and their technical knowledge. GO THERE AND NOWHERE ELSE! read more

Altec did a fantastic job & at a reasonable cost of recreating my red plexiglass cube table lamp. The original lamp (40 years old) had been inadvertently broken into 2 large pieces by the folks who were rewiring it and was not worth being glued back together. Altec made a new cube in the same color with the same dimensions and transferred the lighting section. And now I have my lamp back! I'm very happy with the results. read more

Pitiful! All started out great with my visit and questions regarding my project. And then deteriorated to the point of a joke. I supplied Altec with a scale diagram of what I needed by email; never heard back; had to call to see if my email was received; received an email with quote with WRONG specifications; sent an email correcting their error; never heard back; got a call that project was ready for p.u.; called multiple times in advance to ensure project had been fabricated correctly; never heard back; drove all the way there and it was not only completely unfinished - there hadn't been enough material ordered to finish it; no one seemed to know about the job except the one guy who wasn't there; promised me it would be ready next day; no word; had to call; went to pick up AND THE JOB WAS FABRICATED INCORRECTLY - with the guy claiming he NEVER SAW MY DIAGRAM!
