First let me start by saying I'm very picky when it comes to who I let work on my cars. I do 90% of my own work, but when it comes to Transmissions I'm clueless. So when the time came to have work done on my Type R, I searched online through all the shops in the area and none of them had near the amount of positive reviews that Al's Transmission did. So I picked up the phone and gave them a call. My experience from start to finish was exceptional. Jonathan was very thorough with me in diagnosing the problem and coming up with a solution. Every single person I interacted with was friendly, including Al himself! They quoted me a fair price, got the work done in a timely manner, and kept me informed throughout the process. Long story short, if you are like me, and have been looking for a shop you can TRUST to work on your car the same way you would work on your car, stop looking and just call them now. You won't be sorry. read more

Just wanted to give a shout out to Al's Transmission in Edwardsville, IL. I think Al's is a top-notch transmission shop, and that they are fair, honest, and efficient. I could not have been happier with the service, promptness, and price of the work I received for my car. I was so impressed that I recommended my son contact Al's Transmission to get an estimate on some work he needs to have done on one of his vehicles. Thanks Al. I give you 5 out of 5 stars! read more

Great company, quality work. Al was very professional and great to deal with. My transmission had more problems than I had originally thought. Al contacted me and let me know everything that he had found before starting to work on it, he gave me the quote for what the job was going to cost and it was much less than I was expecting. They were very quick on the turn around. I would recommend this company to anyone I know. read more

Called for my granddaughter as her car was making a noise I presumed to be from her transmission. They got her car in for a diagnosis the next morning. Fortunately all was good with her transmission and just needed a part secured that came loose. Honest, caring and great integrity. Highly recommend! read more

Al is indeed a true gentleman and good businessman. Almost 2 years ago, my mechanic sub-contracted my car out to Al's for a replacement gear on my 6 speed. This year, my car started to whine and grind and make a horrible noise so I took it back to Al. Even though it was almost 2 years ago, I had only put 5k miles on the car as it is a "fair weather" car only. After some checking, he informed me that the bearings had gone out but the company which sold them to him would not replace them for free due to the elapsed time. So I prepared myself for a "soaking." When I went to pick up my car, Al handed me the keys and told me "I went ahead and ate the cost on this repair." No charge! Wow! You can bet I'll be back. And the car? Runs and sounds great. Thanks Al! read more

Do NOT ever go to Al's transmission. I took my vehicle on for a transfer case rebuild or replacement. They advised over the phone that they could do it for a couple thousand less than the dealership. After getting the car in there They charged an enormous diagnostic fee (without telling me they intend to charge that when you drop the car off). They then said I need to change tires before fixing the transfer case. Additionally, Al said that by the time he rebuilds or replaces the transfer case he will be close to the dealer price after it's all said and done. I ended up leaving $230 poorer with nothing fixed. read more

I had an unexpected transmission failure as I was leaving Edwardsville, IL after Thanksgiving with family. I was referred to Al's by another auto shop and I was very lucky. After calling at 2 minutes before closing I spoke with Al himself and he explained exactly what to do to get my truck and trailer to his shop in second gear! He said he would wait for us. After a brief description of what had happened he assured us he could get it fixed in 3 days. He even hitched our trailer on his own SUV and took it back to our nephew's house. We were so lucky it hadn't broke down on the interstate. At the end of the second day we got a call and the truck was ready to be picked up the next morning when they opened. He saved us a whole day of travel time and the clutch feels better than ever. If you need transmission work in the Edwardsville area or beyond, Al is the man to see! read more

My car was surging randomly and no one could figure out what the problem was. Al kept it for almost a week to find the problem. They are very professional and honest. Would recommend them to anyone! read more

I went to Al's because of the great Yelp reviews, and you guys did not disappoint. Great service. No offense- hope I don't have to return, ever- but if I do, I'll go to Al's. read more

Al's Transmission was recommended to me by a local mechanic for transmission problem. Had 2001 C5 Vette that had "growl" coming from transmission. Jonathan worked on transmission and found one bearing that had score in that caused 'growl". Jonathon fixed in less time then had projected. Car runs much quieter now! Very friendly & thourough service. Also was impressed how interacted with other customer to assist them and reduce stress they were feeling for cost as spent extra time reviewing their warranty policy. Would recommend to anyone who needs transmission work. read more

These guys got me in right away and were totally honest with me. I was told from a different repair shop that my car was leaking transmission fluid. Took it to Als and it wasnt my transmission at all. It was oil. They were a little high on their price compared to some other shops, but their honesty about what was wrong was worth its wait in gold. read more

The old adage is if you don't know cars, know your mechanic. Al's Transmission came through for me and I won't hesitate to use or recommend them again! I appreciate Al's honest approach to working with his customers and it obviously rubs off on his technicians as Jon did an outstanding job troubleshooting and fixing my transmission problem! A quality job, done in a timely manner, and at a reasonable price! Thank you Al and Jon!!! read more

This company helped me out in a tough situation. Al and his team worked on my suv and discovered the problem right away. A prior repair shop forgot to put clamps on my hoses. Al's was helpful enough to take pictures of it right away and sent them to me via email so I could send to the repair shop. They also wrote it up in the receipt for proof. I am sure I wouldn't have recovered my $300 if it wasn't for their help. And they didn't HAVE to do any of that but they went above and beyond and that's what their customer service is about. It's sadly rare to find that these days. You can trust Al and his team! So glad I did :) read more

I am expressing my rewarding experience at Al's. I met mechanic John Chappell who is a very knowledgeable technician. He can listen to my car problem, figure out what is wrong and repair it without guessing. John is very friendly. I found he has very good people skills. People like me, we want to be listened too. My first visit to Al's was a major repair job with a very "fair" price with no problems afterwards. John gave me an estimate on repairs and it was close to the actual cost and it was done in a timely manner. The other practice at Al's is no vehicle, yours or mine, leaves this shop without owner, Al Dunaway, personally checking out the repair work. He must give his approval for everything to be done to his satisfaction. I have great trust and confidence in mechanic, John Chappell and owner Al Dunaway. Even though their name speaks of transmission work, this repair shop is a full service center for any vehicle. I highly recommend Al's Transmission Shop. I am a very satisfied customer and I just want others to know about my experience. 11/17/2017 Rick Unger read more

I took my old Chevy dually to Al's. I am very satisfied with the service. When you take your car to a shop you are always worried if your going to be taken. But with Al's you can deal directly with the owner! Al explained the problem and my options. My truck was promptly fixed with no surprise charges. I will go back to Al's if I have any other transmission issues read more

My daughter is goin to school at SIUE. She called me Wednesday and said her car wldn't move forward or bckward. I'm 2.5 to 3 hrs.away from her. Our autoshop in Bloomington said to look on Yelp for a shop. Al's Transmission was the 1st one I saw. I read the bio on the business, and decided from the pics an bio that I wld take a chance on them. One of the best decisions I hav ever made. When I called,Terry took care of the towing to their shop, and said it wld be looked at the nxt day. Instead of 1000 to 2000 dollar bill,it was an electrical problem that cost us 209.00.I now hav someone I trust to wrk on my daughters car. I sure am glad their name came up 1st,and now I look forward to meeting Al and Terry. Thank You both for everything. read more

I had a bit of a situation since I was 250 miles from my broken down car when I called Al's, but I was quickly calmed after talking to Al (yes, the owner). He was straightforward, honest and did the repair in a very timely manner. His customer service was awesome. Initially, my car was at another shop, they were great, but didn't really do transmission work, I initially sent an email to Al's explaining the situation and before he called me, he called the place where the car was at to get as much info as possible. He called me with a possible cause, an estimated price and a very reassuring manner. I totally recommend this place. read more

We took our truck to Al's almost a year ago to put in a new tranny. The year is almost up and we're on a second tranny and 5th visit. Now the second tranny has leaking seals and gaskets. Took it to Al's today. He tightened some of the gaskets and said to bring it back in two weeks. If it is still leaking then, he'll fix them. Also needs the trans cooler hoses repaired. If we leave the truck there, it stays an average of 20 days at a time. One time, they drove it between 300 and 350 miles. Yup, and drained the gas tank too boot. Al will only extent the warranty another 30 days. For lack of a better word, we're screwed. Al lied to us, he does not work well with woman. If you want a year of crap, poor service and hassles Al is your man. If you want a good transmission and no hassles, go some place else. Good luck to you. read more

I recently took my Dodge Caravan to Al's for a transmission rebuild . The repairs were done quickly, correctly, and was the lowest price in the area. I couldn't be happier with the work I had done. I will recommend him to anyone I hear with a transmission problem and will have all my future work done here. read more

I would recommend Al's Transmissions to anyone. He cares about what he does and treats people right. Here's why --- A week ago my son (who is going to school at SIUE) called and said he could not get his truck into 1, 2, or reverse, he thought it was the clutch. Being 3 hours away I was not sure. My husband is a mechanic and he was out of town and unreachable. So I got on line and called Al. After explaining my situation he said have him come in after class and I will see what it may be. He did and was treated very well. He fixed it enough so it was safe for him to bring home. When my husband was able to talk AL called him and explained what needed to be done when we got the truck home. He did not ask for any payment. He treated my son like I would treat him! That is very high on my list. We still have good people in IL. I would recommend you go to Al's Transmissions, Inc. read more
