Set against a brick building on a corner set back from vehicle traffic, Grind stands out with its blue paint, large windows, and pink hipster interior.
We were afraid that all their money went into marketing, especially once we realized it was a chain, but were pleasantly surprised to find that the plates, though small, had quality ingredients and were at fair prices.
Because the dishes were small, and because I couldn't decide between porridge and a savory breakfast, I ordered both the porridge and the mushroom hash, and a latte to drink. I was happy with the former, though it wouldn't have been a large enough portion on its own. The hash was disappointing but for the egg on top with a farm-fresh orange-colored yolk. It took ages for the food to arrive. I think we waited about forty minutes, which gave us ample time to finish our coffees and start looking around eagerly at the wait staff. They didn't seem particularly busy that day, but they did forget to bring a spoon so I couldn't eat my porridge when it did arrive. I requested a spoon, and was given a teaspoon. Then another waitress came by five minutes later with a proper large one. The oats were hot, creamy, and delicious with sliced blackberries on top.
The mushroom hash was disappointing because, although it had a variety of wild mushrooms and fun mustard greens, the "hash" part was a thick triangle of potato, lightly fried but mostly mush. It wasn't a hash brown in the least, and didn't have anything to dress it up, like onions. If it had been crispier, or not as thick, it would have been enjoyable. My partner got the hash, too, with his full English breakfast, but he favored that over the toast, which tasted like the grill. There were beans and bacon and sausage on his plate, which were expected, but the bacon wasn't crispy enough and the sausage was too sweet. Our friend was happy with her chorizo bowl (though she also found the toast inedible), but the side bowl of tomato, cucumber, and feta wasn't quite right. The tomatoes were out of season, and far too firm.
The verdict? Fine if you want coffee and porridge, but for anything savory I would prefer to wait for brunch at another place down the street.
