Never taken to social media about an experience. Usually only positive or negative experiences are…read morethe ones that get posted so here's a negative one for you. This one unfortunately in Wallowa County. Brought my friends home to bachelor party in the county. Show them the local spots, summit mount Sacajawea and then have a good afternoon golf session at Alpine Meadows. We made it one hole before we turned back to the club house and demanded a $170 dollar refund. We called last week to get a tee time, set for 12 & 12:30, we came in early to give us a bigger cushion for a party of 5. We were told to split, so we did. Group of 3 & 2. Despite playing on schedule, on hole two in the middle of the fairway one of my party members was in the middle of his practice swing when the marshal, JD, rolled up in his cart and during the practice swing yelled "just hit the damn ball." (Loud enough for me to here on the tee box of 2, waiting to hit.) - apparently being on hole 2 at 12:20 with a 12:30 tee off time was too slow. My party member topped the ball and JD followed it up with "have you ever played before." Immediately this was followed by a verbal confrontation and attack from JD that resulted in us declaring "We're just here trying to have fun" "Well you're not making it fun." - JD We immediately went to the club house to get a refund knowing that the experience of the golf course is not about the golfers but the staff of the course, apparently. We failed to get a full refund after one hole but thankfully were able to get a partial refund. I'm disappointed that this experience does not represent the Enterprise and Wallowa county that I know.

We are not golfers. Not even a little bit. So I cannot judge the excellence of this course from a…read moregolfing standpoint. But I can expertly judge the scenery, staff and cart riding shenanigans. We went on a perfect 70 degree Saturday afternoon. We rented a cart, which cost us $28 each. We also needed a set of clubs, balls and 4 beers. The staff took pity on our obviously clueless selves and gave us an excellent discount on the clubs, filled a cooler with ice for us and wouldn't even accept a tip. Altogether our afternoon of fun cost $76. If my husband can't call himself a golfer, than I can't even call myself a spectator. By the end of our adventure, my sweet, patient, non-competitive man was quietly suggesting that I just use this as putting practice. :) I think my average stroke was 13. Haha! But we still had an absolute blast. The carts are gas powered and zippy and the course was gorgeous. It is located right along Lake Cascade with snow capped mountains as the back drop. There were a lot of hills, trees and sand traps (hence my embarrassing average). Nonetheless it was a glorious afternoon filled with beautiful weather, golf innuendos, and a few moments of panic that the cart was going to tip. ‍

Out there in the high desert hush of Quail Ridge Golf Course, before a man even sets foot on the…read morefirst tee, he is already on trial. Not by the marshal, not by the wind sweeping off those painted hills but by his own dear wife. And let me tell you, partner, somewhere between the parking lot and Hole One, I received a full audit of my character. Every flaw, every shortcoming laid out cleaner than a freshly raked bunker. This ain't just golf... this is emotional counseling with a view. And what a view it is. Baker country rolls out like a promise you can't quite reach soft valleys, brushed mountains that look close enough to shake hands with but never quite let you. I tried to sneak a few photos, you know, capture the majesty... but apparently my amusement was punishable by spousal decree. Every grin earned me a look that said, "Focus." Lord help me, I tried. Now the game itself? Oh, we weren't out here to politely tap balls and sip sunshine. No sir. We had ourselves a shirt game. Stakes per hole. Pride on the line. Real business. The kind of golf where every shot makes you dig into your soul and ask: what do you have in your quiver? Because here's the rub she wants the whole arsenal. Every club. The full traveling circus. Meanwhile, I stand firm like a stubborn caddie philosopher: you bring a handful, and you MacGyver the rest. Adapt. Improvise. Overcome. And I'd wager every fella out there secretly agrees... though they may not say it out loud. The greens? Better than they have any right to be out in what feels like the edge of civilization. Smooth, honest, and just tricky enough to make you question your putting stroke and your upbringing. And circling it all like a crown you didn't earn but get to wear anyway are these near 360-degree mountain views. A few homes dot the landscape, all new and polished, sitting pretty like they cracked the code on life. It's quiet. It's clean. It's the kind of place that whispers, this is what "getting away" is supposed to feel like. Of course, peace never lasts. My wife on a mission, moving like she's late for a tee time with destiny takes off ahead to catch the group in front. Meanwhile, I'm back here conducting important research: a little jackassing, a little hee-hee-ha-ha, soaking it all in like a man who knows the scorecard matters less than the story. And somewhere between her waving me forward and me pretending I didn't see it, it hit me This place? It's a little slice of heaven disguised as a golf course. You want country without losing comfort? You want space to breathe, laugh, compete, and maybe get humbled a time or two? You come out here. Just... maybe bring fewer clubs. And thicker skin.
