I want to share my story to make people aware. I was a long…read moretime patient of Dr. Pahopos. I have paid him thousands of dollars over the years. I have bad teeth due to Celiac disease, lots of cavities and crowns. But sadly, that has now come to an end. His skills as a dentist are not in question. Over the past few years I have had issues with his billing department. I have dental insurance and Dr. Pahopos is in network for me. This means I should be charged the contracted rate my insurance company has negotiated with Dr. Pahopos for various procedures. After every visit, every procedure, I get an invoice for an incorrect amount. I have always been overcharged.  I have to maintain spreadsheets and provide EOBs to prove the invoices are wrong. Once I go through that hassle, the billing department corrects my invoice. I warn all patients to be smart about keeping an eye on such things. I don't know if the billing department is incompetent or trying to rip me off.  The straw that broke the camel's back was my latest cleaning. I came in the office and Becky told me Dr. Pahopos was not in the office to do my exam.  She said Dr. Basko was working that day.  She checked and Dr. Basko is out of network for me so I declined the exam and just got the cleaning telling her that Dr. Pahopos can do my exam on my next visit.  I never saw or met Dr. Basko. The billing department submitted the claim to my insurance under Dr. Basko's name and not Dr. Pahopos' name.  My insurance viewed that as out of network and covered less of the claim.  I contacted the billing department and they said this is office policy to submit claims based on the doctor in the office that day. I wonder if both are in the office, which they choose? Anyway they said they would make a ONE TIME EXCEPTION to correct the claim. That does not sit right with me.  It feels like fraud.  It feels like the billing department does not have my best interests in mind.  It feels like the billing department is not respecting my choice of dentists and my insurance. I asked the billing department to have Dr. Pahopos call me to discuss.  I actually wanted to tell him why I would be leaving his practice to look for another dentist.  Having to deal with this billing department is too much hassle and too much work.  I never received a call from Dr. Pahopos.  Either his billing department never gave him my request to have him call me or he does not give a crap about me.  I don't think this is good business and I don't want to support a business that is working against me, not working to support me. Again, I warn all patients to be smart about keeping an eye on their bills.

Needless to say, I put off going to the dentist for several years because of this. 3 months ago I finally gathered up the courage to go see a dentist (Dr.Thomas Brown in Naperville) They told me I had 12 cavities and needed 2 crowns and all the work needed to be done immediately, starting with the crowns. I couldn't believe it... Despite not going to the dentist in a few years I take very good care of my teeth. Plus, I have no pain or sensitivity to any of my teeth. I felt as if they were trying to rip me off. At that point, I told them I needed to get a second opinion. I started asking around and some friends and family recommended I go see Dr. Mark in Elmhurst, so I called and set up and appointment. I sent him my x-rays and images the previous dentist had taken so he could look at the same images as the last dentist. When I arrived for my appointment I was very nervous, but he made me feel extremely welcomed. Dr. Mark has a great personality and I immediately felt relaxed. The atmosphere is not like the typical dentist office. The room is round, classical music playing through surround sound, great lighting, and the dental chair has a back massager in it. That's right, a back massager! He has the hightech equipment and uses no drill lasers to fill cavities...pretty amazing stuff. After looking over my X-rays Dr. Mark said I might need one crown in a year or two, and I have a few old fillings that might need to be replaced in a few years. He told me that he wouldn't do anything that doesn't need to be done...now that's a dentist you can truly trust. Now, I actually look forward to going to the dentist. Tried to explain this to them multiple times and they were extremely rude and didn't even care. I have never missed an appointment before and have paid every bill so due to the circumstances they wouldn't even consider it. So many better offices in the area that actually care about you and not just profit. Going somewhere else now and so much happier with my care.

The front office ladies are friendly and follows up with you regarding any questions you may have whether it's about insurance coverage or re-scheduling an appointment. I love that they call and remind me about my appointments since they're spread out and I tend to forget! Dr. Nelson is fantastic. He has a great sense of humor and is gentle on the touch. His dental hygienists are all fabulous. They make you feel comfortable and welcome. Is it weird that I always want to fall asleep in this office? For some reason I'm very comfortable being in a dentist office, I actually love watching Dr. Nelson examine my teeth, etc. I secretly believed I could of been a dentist, I mean I still can, who knows! My original dentist was in Oak Brook and they got taken over by Dr. Amiran and Dr Dr. Asadi. They recently moved over the Cottage Hill Dental and here we are. My normal cleaning appointment was long over due and they actually called to remind me- really appreciate that! The dental office was very clean and upon arrival I noticed the air purifier and the associate at the front desk had everyone coming in use hand sanitizer. Also everyone was wearing masks properly. All of these things really make you feel extra safe when coming in for a dental appointment. Nancy was my Dental Hygienist and she is the best! I feel like I have known Nancy for years. She is so welcoming and did a great job explaining the step by step process of what she was doing. The dental nerves melted away and honestly she had me laughing the entire time. My hygienist Nicole was absolutely amazing -- so thorough, gentle, and kind. The doctor was also incredibly attentive and explained everything in detail, making me feel truly cared for. Knowing that the doctors are a husband-and-wife team adds such a family feel to the whole experience. You can tell they genuinely care about their patients, and it shows in every part of the visit. SUPER tl;dr: Awesome people, awesome work, 5 stars aren't enough…read more I don't believe there are enough synonyms for 'best' when it comes to this dental office. I had put off going for years...I had problem teeth that I'd tried saving with a previous dentist but I got frustrated and stopped going. That was in the mid-, late-90s. Yeah...I waited a looooooong time. So long, in fact, it was time to throw in the towel and have them removed. Enough about my lazy history...on with the awesomeness that is Scharfenberg Dental!!! They were able to get see me quickly. Dr. Jerry listened to my story in which I took full responsibility for my predicament -this wonderful man basically said I was there now and let's take care of the problem. No judgment, just a patient man with a plan. Took care of an immediate problem right away, then scheduled the extractions shortly thereafter. The day of the surgery, I was, of course, freaking out. He had given me a pill to take a couple of hours prior to coming in. Then, it was nitrous & Novocaine. They offered headphones with Pandora, there are bird feeders strung in the trees outside...seriously, the people in this office are concerned with your comfort and well-being on every level. Everything went well...I think I remember about 30 seconds total of the hours-long procedure and honestly? I have ZERO memories of pain or even discomfort. Nothing. Dr. Jerry and the dental tech spoke in calm, soothing voices -I never freaked once. Their caring follow-up calls later that day and after truly made me feel well cared-for. During my treatment, I was handed off to Dr. Carly, who then worked with me to get full dentures. She has been an absolute delight, always cheerful, also 100% non-judgmental about my reason for being there...believe me, that's meant a lot. For the first time in over 20 years, I can now smile. Really smile. When she first put in the plates, I cried. These wonderful people gave me back my smile. Dr. Carly said something funny and as I laughed, my hand immediately covered my mouth, as I've done since the 90s. She held my hand and said, "You don't have to do that anymore." Monumental. It's said that the receptionist is the face of an office. Sharon is the sweetest, most down-home lady you'll ever meet. From her greetings to her conversations to her scheduling you to the best convenience of all, you won't find a nicer, more competent lady anywhere. This already fantastic business is fortunate to have her. Erica & Carol, the dental techs, are not only awesome at their jobs, they are super-awesome girls. They always spoke to me like a friend, not just a patient. They helped keep me calm and feel welcome, all while performing their duties well. To sum it up, run...don't walk...to this office.
