The good part is that it is close to where J live which is only a 5-minute drive (30 minute walk) from my home! The bad part about this place is that there is no one working behind the counter to serve the customers! Sad, that many Amtrak stations are short of staff, but there are employees that check your tickets prior to boarding the train! They are courteous and this is what highly admire about them! If you have a shipload of a suitcase and it's too heavy to carry, they will immediately give you a helping hand! read more

Alpine, may be beautiful. I'm not sure both times I went through it, it was dark. What I can say is DO NOT take Amtrak to get there. On our way home we were pulled over and surrounded by police departments of all sorts, guns pulled, dogs, search on our train, it's taken, no explanation given, it's midnight, it's scary, scared for my life what was going to happen. There's only one thing you need to know about the Alpine TX Amtrak station (and if you're traveling the long southern route of the Sunset Limited that stretches from the Pacific to the Atlantic -- this will be important) -- The town of Alpine has a village-wide free WiFi!!!! It's just a short stop in Alpine -- maybe 10 minutes -- 15 max -- so take advantage of the stop to check your mail, grab an update, enter a funny crag on FaceBook -- then all together as you pull out of the station....
