A great ballplayer and an even greater human, Roberto was known for charity work and died in a plane crash on a humanitarian mission to Nicaragua shortly after takeoff from his native Puerto Rico. This statue was a popular spot for pictures when my father and I visited. A man in a shirt indicating he was a Pirates employee was taking a photo of a group of young men when we walked up so I asked if he could do the same for us. He gladly obliged. I asked if he was stationed there just for that. He said no, but he'd already helped with several groups. I offered him a buck or two but he said he was good. We received great hospitality the whole stay but I'd expect nothing less from the hometown of the late Mr. Rogers. He has a statue as well but unfortunately we never made it over to that one.

James also spearheads a revitalization of the Uptown Community with his public art and community engagement. You probably have noticed James's public art in Downtown Pittsburgh, Troy Hill, Braddock, Duquesne University, but he also has pieces in Tampa, Chattanooga, Cleveland, St. Paul, and Paris France. James's art is beautiful, whimsical, thought provoking and joyous. Often times there is a rhythmical musical quality that is hard to describe but easy to enjoy.

Anyway all jokes aside this was another cool public art display here in Pittsburgh. This was awesome it took up like three different parts of the building it was huge to see. Operational in warm seasons, the fountain water comes from pumps, and its height of up to 150 feet is adjusted by park staff depending on weather conditions. For many years, I have visited Point State Park to view this fountain. Most recently I visited on a hot day in June, and the wind blew a refreshing mist of fountain water onto me. The fountain looked beautiful, especially with the backdrop of the rivers, football stadium, and boats sailing by.

It is a really cool site to see and love that you can spot it from so many different vantage points and angles! It was recently renovated again (although I'm not even sure what they did or if there were any real changes). I think my favorite vantage point is trying to catch a glimpse coming out of the Fort Pitt Tunnel. Either that or if I'm lucky enough to be on a boat that makes a pass past the fountain. (like the Gateway Clipper). It is also great to visit up close which is where you get a real sense of just how high the fountain really shoots! (Although on windy or otherwise bad weather days they can adjust the height to prevent issues). The fountain is a great gathering space. You see all sorts of pictures being snapped here. Weddings, proposals, families, proms etc. It makes for some really great people watching.

After reading the sign that states it's the steepest street in the continental U.S.A., my eight-year-old daughter and I ran down the cobblestone street. What a view!

When I told my family that I was going to take them to a hill, they were all pouting and did not want to go. After we go there, they did not want to leave. We walked up it a few times and drove it a few times. We got the full experience. They were scared when I first drove up it and I must admit, so was I. I did not think that my littles could run up it so I bet them $100 and some how they did. I was shocked. Even the 3 year old did it two and a half times and kept wanting to go up. This is surrounded by other steep hills in the same neighborhood. I do not know how the residents do it. Anyway, this hill is one -way and has a set of stairs on the side of it that you can use to walk up and down. You can easily find parking at the top and/or bottom of the hill and we spent about 30 mintues here climbing up and down and just having fun. I did knot know that my kids would love this hill so much. This spot is located just outside of Pittsburg and is a must do. You will not regret it.

We got to briefly chat with him and he was so down-to-earth. He and his friend came in from Cali to do the job and it was done in just a couple of weeks. His talent is immense and the homage he paid to his friend, Mac is felt in every inch of the mural. I took a bunch of pics but I'm sharing only one as it was the best shot I got. When you see this mural, you don't feel like this kid is gone. Maybe just off on an adventure never to be seen again. Or maybe he's hiding behind the counter at Frick Park Market. Gone too soon but cherished by his hometown, always. If you're in Pittsburgh, head over to neighboring Etna to soak in this piece of history.
