My daughter Julia, 3 years old, has been taking swim lessons through the aquatics center. I can't say enough how happy I am to have enrolled her. She has only been taking lessons for a couple months and can already float in her back by herself and kick to the side in her own. I've been a member for nearly 2 years (and no, I'm not Jewish) and have been really pleased with the facility. I joined because my kid goes to preschool there and with it came a gym membership. Never crowded, clean, good selection of classes. The pool is really nice with a large wading pool for the kids. We live in it during the summer. The pre-school is excellent. The kids are well-cared-for and my son really enjoys it. Though there is a religious aspect to the program, the values are not so much fire and brimstone, but be a good person, be nice to others and give to charity. We could all use a bit of that. read more

DA JCC...this is not just any gym this is da JCC. The enjoyment derived from the JCC is substantial. The facility has all the goodies that any well rounded training center should possess. Heated outdoor swimming pool free weights, machine weights, treadmills, cycles, etc. etc. classes galore (pilates, krav mada, yoga among others) a library sauna and whirlpool and two full count indoor basketball courts. The basketball courts are the real highlight for me though. There are free run games on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The games tend to call a variety of talent to the court, so all sorts of basketball skill sets show up to play. The best part of this inclusive environment though is the opportunity to play against some guys who are in their fifties or even sixties. These men can not be taken lightly since winning and losing is taken very seriously, so much so that the whining and hollering resulting from a loss seems utterly childless when coming from a man who is old enough to be my dad. Plus those bastards play dirty and cry to hog heaven when they happen have a foul called against them. Nothing like a geriatric baller' talkin shit' and offering little tidbits of rhetoric like: "If you try that again I'll throw your ass to the ground." or, "It's about damn time you started setting those screens." Right, like that's all I want to do all day is set up pick and roll plays for your crusty ass, just so your lumbering body will get fouled as you jump a total of two inches off the ground. I just can't wait for one of them to make a lay up and say: "That's how we do it old-school youngster." Oh well, basketball brings the child out in everyone it seems. Enough about basketball though, I shall discuss the "vibe." Most gyms I've attended are meat markets and this one is no exception except I see grannies working out and hitting on some old guys who outmatch my strength ten fold. Go Grannie, get your game on. Love is eternal, indeed. While I do miss the scantily clad ladies sweating it up I'd have to say that the abundance of seniors and families makes the "vibe" very relaxed. Not many people trying to show off their sculpted muscles here, a welcome comfort as I attempt to shed my butter roll hips of love from all the good food I eat. So the criteria is fulfilled. Grannies and Grandpas kicking my sorry out of shape ass all over the weight room and basketball court, families of all types utilizing the swimming pool in the heat, and regular blokes like myself trying to stay in shape. read more

We love the JCC! We started there with the baby class when our son was about 6 months old. As new parents we were overwhelmed but bonded with other families that we're still involved with today. He is now 3 and words cannot express how much he loves going to preschool everyday. He talks about his friends and teachers every evening. Our daughter is 1 and just graduated from Jbaby and has started Yad B'yad. She has so much fun exploring the classroom and getting familiar with her future school. I believe dues are $32 monthly, and $69 monthly for a couple's membership. *Good-sized weight room (both free weights and cable machines. *Good amount of treadmills and elliptical's. have never seen people having to wait for one. *Two full-court basketball gyms (although only one is open all day for open gym). *Large pool (can't confirm if Olympic size) with designated lanes. Jacuzzi as well. *Large private, gated parking lot. *Workout classes are on the slim (no pun intended) size. Mostly offered during midday. *Halls available to rent for private parties. We're about to close out our second year here, and again, I can't say enough good things about the school. Danielle is the administrator who does the day-to-day operations and deals with the parents at the front desk, along with Erika and Mrs. Danziger, and all three of them are caring, responsive, reasonable and efficient. We love them. Mrs. Avchen is still my son's favorite teacher, and although we haven't had her for a year, it still makes us so happy that he was able to really bond with an educator at such a young age. We were also fortunate enough to have Mrs. Washington, who is universally loved by all the parents, this year for my daughter, and she has simply blossomed in confidence and assertiveness. The JCC makes life easier and enjoyable for us. We go to preschool and now that the weather is warm, we bring a snack from home and hang out at the pool after school. We've formed great and lasting friendships with fellow parents. Every so often I bring my laptop and just work out of the JCC, which has free internet, and free coffee in the mornings. We'll be moving out of Long Beach and we wish we could take this JCC with us when we move. It's really something special. read more

I have been a member of the Alpert JCC for 40 plus years, so it was no question where our son was attending pre-school. Along with preschool, our son frequents their amazing Martial Arts Program with Sensei Mac, who is unbelievable! This is his second summer taking swim lessons with Ignacio. He is patient, kind, and teaching my son to become an amazing swimmer! My son was excited to be working with "coach Ignacio" again this summer! Love this place! Always greeted w a friendly smile and the building is always clean. I first joined JCC because of it's awesome outdoor pool. Being a swimmer, it was important for me to swim in a good sized outdoor pool and JCC definitely met the criteria. The upstairs gym is money. Always clean and never overcrowded, I feel like I can workout and not feel like I am being watched as with most other conventional gyms. Great equipment and open areas for abs/stretching. JCC also offers many other fitness classes which I have heard great things about. Only have been to the fast spin class w Elsie and it was great. NOTE- you don't have to be Jewish to come in here or have a membership. Anyone is welcome, and you won't be disappointed. read more

This place is great! I'm reviewing the fitness center but they also have a school and many community programs to check out. I am the resident pool shark so I'm all about the aquatics ...and the pool is the ONLY one in the area that has lap lanes open at almost all times of the day. The summer is a little hectic but easy to work your schedule around. The upstairs fitness center has all new equipment. Great staff. I love this place for more reasons than will fit on a Yelp review...but to sum it up If you live in the area this place is a must. read more

I absolutely love the staff here. I really don't want to review this place and tell everybody how nice the pool is because I really hate a crowded pool. I try to come here every day to swim. They have a really nice heated pool that is almost always the perfect temperature. The staff always makes sure to ask clients whether the water temperature is too hot, too cold, or just right. During days of the heat wave, they turn down or turn off the heater to make sure the water is nice and cold when we jump in. Last week, I realized that I had lost a pair of goggles here - either in the locker room or around the pool. I asked one of the lifeguards if they had it in their lost and found; it wasn't there but he promised to keep an eye out. I didn't think my would ever show up again so I ended up buying a new pair. The following week, the lifeguard had said he had found my goggles!! Hip hip, hooray!! read more

I LOVE this place for the summer months, and then cancel my membership in the cooler months. The pool is great as my son always runs into kids he knows. I had my sons birthday party here last year and the set up crew was great. There are some issues, many years ago I called and called about the pre school and never had a return phone call. This summer I have faxed in an application for a specialty summer camp and haven't heard a word back to confirm, no receipt, nothing even after leaving a message AND speaking with a summer camp employee. I last reviewed the swim program in March 2017. A year later, BOTH my kids are now taking swim lessons. My 5-year-old son has been in the program for two years and looks forward to his lessons. His instructor, Antonio, is knowledgeable and attentive to the kids in the class. In the past year, my son has improved his strokes and side breathing. My 3-year-old daughter just started in May 2017 and can already swim the length of the pool. Her instructor, Bernardo, is patient with all the kids. To say that we love the program is an understatement. We show up for lessons rain or shine. The kids have wetsuits in the winter and swimsuits in the summer. We have done this since my son first started in 2016 and don't plan on changing anytime soon. If you're looking for a program that teaches your child to swim and boost their water confidence, I would highly recommend Ignacio and his team of instructors at the JCC. read more

We started our 4 year old in swim lessons with Ignacio in February and in 3 weeks he was able to swim on his own. Ignacio gave him the confidence to jump in the water and swim, dive for toys and other skills like the back float and using big arms to propel himself forward. Ignacio does this all in a very fun environment and is very adept at keeping his attention! I would highly recommend Ignacio and his team of swim instructors. We will definitely be continuing with his swim lessons. My son is so excited in swim days and it's a joy to watch him learn these valuable skills. read more

My review is about early childhood education center here mostly. I truly love this school. It's been a year since my son started going here. His adjustment was very easy. He is enjoying every day here and misses it when we can't come. The teachers create a very warm atmosphere. He's been in Ms.MacFarland's class first and now in Ms.Herrera's. We love that there is always 3 teachers per about 12-15 kids, so every kid has enough attention. The projects the kids get involved to are always very engaging and fascinating to my kid. I could never find so many fun and educational things to do with him. I also love that the kids dance and sing here, I love how free they feel. At the same time he learned so much here. By the age of 2.5 he knew how to spell his name, most of the letters, he counts till 15. Also there is a heated pool here which my son loves and wants to be there all the time. He also learned a lot of songs here which he sings to us at home all the time. And I just want to say thank you to all the stuff we ever had to deal with. This isn't la fitness, but it's a nice replacement. I've had a Ballys pass and la fitness pass in the past, but somehow love this place more than both of those. It's more family oriented, the classes are free with your membership, and the staff is fantastic. Very nice people. The equipment isn't top of the line, but it's good. I wish they had more ellipticals, because I don't like the ones they have very much. Only like 3 if them are the style I like. If you plan on lifting weights... good luck. They only have 1 bench. The JCC is truly a welcoming community center! We first became involved through the preschool where my daughter started at 18 months in Side by Side with the fabulous Ms. Maureen, aka The Baby Whisperer! We stayed all the way through Pre-K and the preschool prepared her for a very smooth transition to Kindergarten. One admissions director at a school told me they love getting kids from the JCC because they are really ready for 1st grade. Our family has kept our membership because we enjoy the workout classes and personal training available. The facility is clean and the clientele are respectful and friendly to new members as well as old. Grandma enjoys spending time with the various senior programs and loves to go to Knit Wits on Mondays. It is a blessing for her to have a group of ladies that enjoy knitting and donating their finished products to hospitals and children in need. Give the place a try! read more

Bernardo is able to push the kids to the top of their abilities yet he infuses encouragement, support and positive reinforcement during challenging exercises. The Alpert JCC is fantastic! My kids attend Camp Komaroff every summer, and love it - great field trips, fun counselors, enriching activities, etc. They also both went through the ECE, which I can't recommend highly enough. Outside of kids' activities, my family and I also enjoy the well-stocked gym, community festivals and celebrations, the pool, lectures, volunteer opportunities, etc. You also don't need to be Jewish to enjoy the facility: it really is a welcoming center for all. "what's a mexican from mexico hanging out with the jewish brothers?" and before you do i'll have you know i've always brethened with the jewish folk. i've always been a man of cosmopolitan character despite my small town beginnings. after all i've lived in bixby knolls (jewish mini capital of l.a.) for the last 17 years. i've eaten at canters (unfortunately) many times, used to watch seinfeld religiously and can sort of stand steven spielberg. anyway, this place is pretty sweet. especially the basketball courts which i came here for with anton e. there are many amenities in this place and as well as classes: pilates, krav mada, and yoga. there are the usual weight and cardio machines, a heated outdoor swimming pool, and even a library! but the basketball courts is where it's at. they're clean, well ventilated, they're in good shape and there are plenty of them. the courts remind me of my cerritos college years when i used to play basketball at the gymnasium. it's very family oriented and the place is impeccably clean. i don't remember what the membership fees are but they're pretty affordable for what they have on offer. read more

I return and return, because this is the most comfortable, all inclusive, no attitude gym/community facility I've ever belonged to. I'm compelled to come home straight after my workout and write this, as I not only congratulate myself for getting out of the house and do something good for my health, but so very inspired by the large cross-section of people there today: from the serious basketball players, to the grunting chiseled weightlifters, to the skinny minnies running their hearts out, to the average joes just trying to keep and/or stay healthy, to the families, and to the octogenarians, some with walkers and wheelchairs, so well cared for by the staff, who show up, and do what they can (sometimes better than I can!). A reminder to be grateful, and to be kind, to everyone. This is the place. And yes, the workout room might be small, but it is full of high end equipment that is well maintained. read more

After a month of swim lessons at the JCC with Bernardo, my 5.5 year old is swimming like a champ! I especially like how the instructors pay close attention to detail and use positive communication during the lessons. I go to the gym here. Everyone is friendly and it is not crowded. Even during peak hours you can get on the equipment without waiting long. I've been doing some personal training with Jaime for the past couple months and she is awesome. I would highly recommend her if you are interested in personal training services. read more

I don't know much about this place aside from Pete's Davis basketball camp Coach Pete Davis basketball camp is EXCELLENT. Coach Davis is extremely friendly and helpful. They welcome all levels from beginner (rookie) to veterans. Coach has a wonderful coaching staff who are helpful not only to the kids but to the parents as well. They'll do their best to make sure you child is in the right team to practice with. MY son played under Coach Royce in the summer and is currently playing for him again. He is one the most caring and understanding people you'll meet. He's great at teaching them all the fundamentals from passing, dribbling, shooting, etc. Above all, he's EXTREMELY PATIENT with all his players. If you child is a beginner like mine, i highly recommend either Coach Royce or any of the other coaches to help guide your child in the great sport. I would recommend anyone sending their kids to Coach Pete's basketball camp/league whatever level thy're at. They're all completely professional You'll love it. read more

Fun and friendly staff, the fitness gym has everything I need and the basketball court is wonderful. It's a gem hidden in Long Beach

My kids went to preschool there. It was a very good experience for them and myself. I thought the program was on of the best. The facility is very good. I have been to and had functions there. I.e. Poker nights and fund raisers, I have used their gym and pool. I've meet some really special people there and will never forget the place. I'm not a member anymore due to my kids have grown and have a lot of other activities that keep us away. I am happy to have experienced the jcc. read more

Very nice facility. Staffs are all very helpful and friendly. Recently they offer EV charging, BUT there's no enforcement as regular cars are taking the spots. AJCC, if you see this, an enforcement would be really great. read more
