I made an appointment to see this daycare and when I got there a boy was crying because another kid was drinking from his water bottle and the teacher got mad at him for screaming. She was so busy that she never even talked to me which made me leave. I am looking for next year, not in any hurry and it was better than the church school with no kids and one teacher that could hardly speak English but I don't like that I was there and not acknowledged. I am not one to leave a bad review or any reviews but this one just bothered me. We went to go sign my son up in sept/oct of 2019! Even paid the $100 registration fee to get on the waitlist. We did the tour everything and left. Pandemic hit things are different now I get. We get an email saying there was an open spot on 4/14/20 right at the start of covid and no one knew what was going to happen. I respond back on 4/20/20 because we were hesitant on this whole covid thing and they respond back on 4/21/20 saying the spots had been filled... so what was the point of the $100 to be put on the waitlist for? Which we were like ok whatever. I then emailed on 6/10/20 and everything was still at capacity..... I then email on 3/4/21 that's right 2021 and there were still no openings at all. A couple houses down from us new neighbors moved in from San Francisco..... they have a little girl the same age as our son and they didn't register her until fall of 2020 maybe winter and she got in! How is that possible when I signed my son up since 2019!!! Maintained communication and kept asking if there were any openings and this happens. Poor communication from this school. When I had to keep asking if there was an opening. They have the $100 of registration we paid to put him on this supposed "waitlist". SINCE 2019!!!!!!! If you're going to register your child beware of the poor communication, favoritism and just upright disregard in their "own rules" they have in place. I would go look elsewhere. read more

I have to say that when looking for a preschool for my son of 18months I was very afraid! I had a boutique at the time and was unable to run it with him there... a regular customer of mine suggested Edgewater she raved about it and I called and scheduled an appointment for a tour... I felt comfortable with the staff instantly and signed him up that day! He will turn 5 this August and I know we will truly miss them once we move into K. The teachers and aids are fantastic they are a magnificent staff! You can send partial or full week (we've been full ever since). THEY HELP POTTY TRAIN! My daughter has been at Edgewater for 2 years now (starting at 18 mos) and we could not be happier with our experience there. It was so important for us to find a play-based preschool (and not one focused on academics or memorization) because of how crucial play is for the preschool years and Edgewater is superb in that regard. Our daughter comes home exhausted (in a good way!) and her clothes generally have paint or dirt on them which can only mean one thing: she's learning through play and having a great time! They have 2, 3, or 5 day options (full or partial days) which is so convenient. All snacks and lunches are provided each day (and they provide a great, healthy variety) which is a huge relief that I don't have to prepare that myself! They also schedule many family events throughout the year: movie nights, fall festival, holiday show, etc. which is nice to get the families together. The staff are diverse and you can often hear one of the teachers speaking French or Spanish with the children. It is very apparent that each of the staff cares deeply about their job and the children who are in their care. My daughter's safety and well-being have never been in question while at the school. When we've had an issue come up, the director and teacher have always been open to hearing our concerns and addressing them appropriately. When I pick my daughter up I always "sneak" in the back to observe her and see what she's doing before she knows I'm there and she's always got a big smile on her face playing with her buddies in the playhouse, running around kicking a ball in the yard, playing Legos, or reading books. And when I make myself known she's always eager to show me something fun from her day there. We look forward to when our second daughter is old enough to enroll so that she can experience Edgewater too! read more

My daughter has attended Edgewater since she was 20 months old. We've been there for 3 1/2 years and couldn't be happier about our experience. All of the teachers are nurturing and loving. The directors and owners listen to you as a parent. The school feels safe and secure. They send daily newsletters out to tell you what your child did each day. They have nutritious snacks and meals made from scratch regularly (an on staff chef prepares everything). They play outside, they get messy, they do tons of art, they learn to share and socialize, they plant gardens and feed chickens. They go on field trips (as they get older) to the strawberry farm, pumpkin patch and the local park. My daughter has thrived at Edgewater. She will be entering kindergarten next week and I feel she is prepared due to her experience at this school. We love our Edgewater family! read more

Our daughter has gone here since turning 18 months (she's now 4) and loves every single day. The staff are great - each teacher is patient and kind, but firm. As my daughter matriculates to the next level, she continues to talk about all the teachers she's had in years past. I love that they get to play outside and take care of animals (chickens, rabbits, snakes) as well as grow things in the garden. The homemade and nutritious lunches are a godsend for working parents like myself who don't have to worry that my child is getting a healthy lunch. Speaking of, the hours (drop off at 7am and pick up by 6pm) are incredibly convenient for working parents. My son loves going to preschool here! They send a daily email with what the kids did each day, as well as the menu for the month. The teachers really care about the kids. Our son has been going to Edgewater for two years. He really likes it. The teachers are all very caring and engaged with the students. Quite often when I pick him up at the end of the day, his teacher or even other teachers have funny stories to tell me about what he said or did that day. It makes me happy to know they are really engaged. I like their philosophy. They are interested in exposing the children to experiences. They aren't overtly academic and they aren't too wishy washy either. There is a lot of outdoor playtime, but they do have science time, art, reading, nap, etc. They teach not by just dictating rules, but by age-appropriate play and responsibility. My son has been coming here since he was 2 1/2 yrs old, the staff is great and easily accessible when you want to get an update on your child. The school keeps the parents updated on the daily activities and they send email updates of what's going on at the school. My children both attended Edgewater Preschool. My son, who is now in 1st grade, attended for one year, and my daughter is finishing up her second year. My little girl is now moving on to kindergarten and I am so sad that my Edgewater days are coming to an end. The last three years at Edgewater have been an incredible and positive experience for our entire family. I work as an administrator and counselor for a very large public high school which requires me to drop my children off very early and pick them up later than I would like. One of the things that has assuaged my guilt is that both of my children LOVE going to pre school. There were many times when I came to pick up either child and they complained that I came too early...they were still playing and did not want to leave. What first caught my attention about the school was their educational philosophy. Edgewater preschool encourages children to learn through exploration, imagination, guided playtime, free playtime, and carefully crafted lesson plans. The staff is provided professional development on the most current research about how pre-school aged children learn. My children are very "selective" eaters, yet Cook Maria and the Edgewater teachers somehow managed to get them to eat a wide variety of healthy foods (my kids actually ate veggies...a major accomplishment). I can honestly say that I have had only positive interactions with the staff at Edgewater. They treat the children and their families with love and respect. I've never provided a recommendation on Yelp before but I'm motivated to do it for Edgewater because of the incredible experience my family has had at this school. Both my wife and I have to work so we have had to leave our son, since the age of 2, in the care of others for more time than we would have wanted. Because he would be at preschool a large part of the day, we knew that we needed to find a preschool that would not only teach him but love him and nurture him. We found that place at Edgewater Preschool in Long Beach. My son has been at Edgewater for 3 wonderful years. The owners are loving, consciousness, and passionate about teaching and nurturing children. Our son has had four different teachers through his years at Edgewater and every teacher has been wonderful. The director, Stephanie, is amazing and does a great job managing the school and informing the parents of school activities. They schedule parent conferences to discuss your child's development twice a year but are always available to discuss your child's development and needs. They have great activities throughout the year and schedule several field trips every year that our son has loved (Tanaka Farms, Pumpkin Patch, etc.) I also have to mention the cook, Maria. Our son will miss Maria's cooking next year when he moves on to Kindergarten. It has been wonderful for him to have home-cooked meals in preschool and the meals are delicious. The only drawback has been those times when I make something at home and our son tells me that it was good but not as good as Maria's! It was not until we moved and I have had to start looking for another preschool that I realized what a gem Edgewater is! The staff and teachers were all amazing and caring. Every day when I walked my son in every single person who worked in the school greeted him by name. The focus on outdoor play and exploration is wonderful. Communication from the staff and administration was excellent and they always were wonderful about letting me know if my child had any issues (was coming down with a cold, scraped his knee, etc). If we had not moved away from the area my son would be there still. Would absolutely recommend this school. read more
