This was just an incredible event, I'm thrilled to have been here!!! The ballrooms, patios & salons were overflowing with Native American culture. The Seminole Tribe is a federally recognized Native American people, descendants of Southeastern tribes who resisted forced removal, notably in Florida, becoming known as the "Unconquered People" for never signing a peace treaty with the U.S. The Seminoles are the most prosperous tribe as they own the entire chain of the Hard Rock restaurants, resorts and casinos.
Pow Wows are the Native American people's way of meeting together, to join in dancing, singing, visiting, renewing friendships & making new ones. Here they renew Native American culture & preserve their rich heritage.
It is believed that when tribes were forced onto reservations the government also forced them to have dances for the public to watch. Before each dance they were lead through the town in a parade, which is the beginning of the Grand Entry. Veterans are other important guests of the pow wow including Tribal Chiefs, Princesses, Elders, and pow wow organizers are first. Next in line are the male dancers. The men are followed by the women dancers. Once everyone is in the arena, the song ends and a song is sung to honor the flags and the veterans. After a prayer, the dancing resumes, usually with a few round dances. After the round dances, intertribal dancing songs are performed and everyone at the ceremonial dances to the beat of the drum.
Powwow singers are very important figures in the Native American culture. Without them there would be no dancing. The songs are of many varieties, from religious to war, to social. They still hold special meaning to American Indians who know the words. Many songs are still sung in traditional Native American languages either newly composed or revivals of old songs. These songs serve as reminders to Native Americans of their old ways and rich heritage. Social dances might have had different meanings in earlier days. Although dance styles and content have changed, their meaning and importance has not. The outfits worn by the dancers, like the styles of clothing today evolve over time, it is not a stagnant culture, but a vibrant and changing way of life.
There were Native American themed food trucks lined up outside the patios. I wanted to try fry bread but the lines appeared endless. We gave up and went to the food court where there were pizza, Asian, burger & healthy options. In retrospect we should have brought bottles of water. There were enough clean stocked restrooms.
