Okay... This was simply a culinary experience. The food was absolutely unique in every way. I haven't had the opportunity to try new flavors and just love them immediately in a long time. Service was basic, nothing over the top. Except crumbing the table between courses which we of course appreciate. There was a language barrier. I try my absolute best with speaking in espanol although it may not come across correctly. So I order some things that didn't arrive in the drink department. Not the end of the world we had a great time. The small details of the plates that seem handmade was great, the overall vibe of the place is casual, but the delivery of food quickly throws that to the way side. We ordered 2 appetizers for 4 people: a $30 USD asparagus appetizer that came with 3 small asparagus and some sauce and fried octopus with a dab of seasoned tomato paste on the side. Neither were that good. My bf and I each ordered the lamb risotto. The risotto was not cooked all the way (harder than Al dente) and the sauce was way too sweet. The lamb was also nothing to be desired. My sister got the steak which she enjoyed and friend got the lamb chops which he enjoyed. I am willing to spend a lot on small portions of the food is great. This place is constantly rated as "the best restaurant in Puerto Escondido". Chef Quetzalcoatl Zurita does a good job. The venue is small but cozy. The staff is very well trained and attentive at all times. This all adds up to the overall experience (hence the 4 stars). There was not a single moment when I or my party felt unattended. However, I must say that the food, despite its superb presentation and spot-on flavors, felt "not memorable". Allow me to elaborate. This is a place that shares a pedigree with the so-called, best restaurant in Mexico: Pujol). I was expecting a little bit more than just good food. I was expecting to be amazed. Nevertheless, the salsas were plain. The corn (esquites) served at the beginning of our food tasted very good, but not different from the one you can purchase from any street vendor (and at 1/10 of the price). They scored additional points for the homemade mayo, but again, the flavor was not different, or substantially better. The chocolate taste like just chocolate Ibarra and the moles are not different to the ones you can buy at the store. Then the appetizers came in. The house pita was small, even nonexistent. The strong flavor of the smoke oysters dominated the entire plate. The Tempura octopus had no tempura. I confess that this came up as a surprise to me, but then, the waiter explained to me that they referred to the cooking method and not to the plate itself (my bad). the entrees had indeed a few gems. The Lobina with chimichurri was excellent. The unexpected lime flavor and the combination of pomelo and potato elevated this dish even further. However, the "mushroom barbacoa" fell flat on its ass. The Risotto was a completely forgettable plate. We tried all the desserts, but only the thousand leaves with strawberry can qualify as an over-the-top dish. The rest were very good as well, but again, I was expecting more. I don't even know where to start, but if you want a review that is going to be 100% honest and truthful please keep reading. My bf and I spent two months in Puerto Escondido and ate here six times. YES! Six times! We were starving one evening and found Almoraduz. We were pretty disappointed with most of the food we had before but this place was to die for. The first night we went, we got the tasting menu. They serve all the popular items from the menu in mini size. Get there early to get the full experience, as it does take about 2 hours. You can order the tasting menu with drinks but we did not. The service at this place is incredibly good! They give you time to finish your food, before serving you the next dish. They are always on top of things! When they seat you, they place your napkin on your lap or on the table next to your plate. My favorite dish has to be the Flank steak served with Brussel sprouts and mashed potatoes. My bf's favorite dish was the suckling pig served with mole sauce, pork skin, tortillas, and purée sweet potato. He also loved the tuna fish tostada. If you go please ask for Ivan! He was the best and served us 4/6 times we went. See pictures for Ivan. He was also super nice. This place is super nice overall. The servers explain every dish before you eat. Wow! Was very pleasantly surprised tonight having found this gem located in this hippy surfer, off the beaten path town. A friend had recommended we visit so we made a reservation at 7:00pm. We get in and get seated in a great table, in front of the bar under a fan, which is important here. We began perusing the menu when I realized that these are really thoughtful well intended plates. Unexpected. The staff provided excellent guidance, in navigating both cocktails and food. When the totopos and salsa hit the table I knew there was something special going on here. Did some inquiry through our waiter and it turns out their chef, Quetzalcoatl Zurita is a Pujol alumnus. Well that explained a lot. Every dish showed mastery and outstanding flavor. Their toasted corn tortillas, of which there were several varieties, one example had moorings infused into it, pared with some great salsa, such as their spicy salsa macha, which I predict will be the newest salsa trend coming forward. Salsa martajada, incredible finesse and flavor. The black risotto with huitlacoche, incredibly rich layers of flavor with tiny mussels, octopus tentacles and other seafood bits. Epic. We had a confit of suckling pig that was like a carnitafest deconstructed in a good way. Roasted peach salad, fabulous! The Dorado was cooked perfectly, anointed with a light spread of chimichurri with supremes of grapefruit over something called false potato risotto, imagine a super rich, runny, cheesy mashed potato with little bits of blanched brunoise of potatoes. Stellar dish for a "catch of the day". Finished with a mezcal soaked banana bread with pumpkinseed ice cream in a caramelized mezcal butter cream like sauce that was nothing short of life changing. Had several mescal based cocktails, including the Tribute with its cilantro, tamarind cucumber infused juice fused with a nice local artisanal espadin mezcal. Damn it was excellent. If you come to this town, make sure to visit this place. It was epic, and all for about $40 per person. read more

What an amazing experience! We booked a reservation at Almoraduz, which I highly recommend. They fill up. We say they had a tasting menu and chose to try it paired with drinks. It was an awesome journey of flavors. Five dishes are listed on the menu but you get to also try 5 more surprise dishes. It is like tasting the best dishes on their menu plus more. All of the food was delicious and the accommodated me being a pescatarian. My husband loved all of the meat dishes. The drinks were good but next time I would just order a glass of wine. The timing seemed off with the food. They were not served exactly with courses so we were not sure if they were supposed to be paired with plates. The service was incredible! All of the dishes were explained in detail. Everyone was so happy and friendly. I was so impressed when I saw the person pouring our water pour me a glass, then he put the bottle down to turn the label to my husband when he poured him a glass. If there were a drawer above the top drawer, Almoraduz would earn that designation. Service and Food were crave-worthy. That is the highest praise for any restaurant. It was a busy Friday night, and thankfully, we had a coveted reservation. It was happening, but our servers didn't miss a queue and perfectly timed our appetizers, entrees, and desserts. Pro tip: Don't miss the raw fish appetizer; if you are not a huge dessert fan, consider skipping it. This has to be the best restaurant in Puerto Escondido. Unfortunately, it was somewhat difficult to enjoy because, like mostly all restaurants in PE, it's open air and I stopped in here while visiting in humid July. At least there were plenty of fans blowing. We started with the oysters from Ensenada, which I frankly did not enjoy. But it's not like the restaurant could have done anything to prevent that, other than not serve them. Unfortunately, the wine by the glass menu is super limited (one red and one white option, only). That said, the bottle menu is a little more expansive. The cocktail menu also looked great but I stuck to beer and wine. I really wanted the $800 MXN tasting menu with wine pairing for $1150 MXN, but everyone at the table had to get it so I was shit out of luck. Instead, I opted for the roasted peach salad with goat cheese, nuts, tomato cherry, and agave honey, which was absolutely delicious despite starting out cold and ending up hot. My only gripe is they did a bad job of tossing the salad as most of the good stuff was sitting at the bottom of the bowl by the time I had already gotten through most of the lettuce. For a main, I got the lamb shank, which fell right off the bone. The sauce, which wasn't quite a mole, was interesting to say the least. I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it either. It did work strangely well with the dish, however. For dessert, we split the molten Oaxacan chocolate cake, which was three bites at best. The cactus fruit popsicle was both misplaced and tasteless. Vanilla ice cream would have been better suited for this dish, but they probably feared it would melt faster than the cake. Overall the service was friendly and the meal was the best I had in PE. read more

I really enjoyed the ceviche. The coconut meat was really nice and the juices perfect. The pork was recommended to me and so I tried it but... being Asian this option was less fantastic than what I am used to. Plus for some reason there was very cheap cheese to accompany it- I thought it was very distasteful add. Given the pricing on that pork- I think stay away and go for the duck or a handful of seafood dishes- I sure wish I had read the reviews as someone else says don't eat the pork. I treated my husband to the tasting menu for his birthday and it was disappointing. At $450, I cannot recommend it. Most dishes were not out of the ordinary (botanas were what you would find in most other restaurants--pescadilla, bite sized tostada), but what impacted the experience most was the off service. None of the drinks paired came out at the same time as the courses, and several dishes came out cold. When asked about allergies, I noted my husband was allergic to avocado, and they nevertheless placed an avocado salsa on one of the mains. The only memorable dishes were: the infladita, the pork in mole, and the catch of the day. It's too bad it had me feeling I should have just ordered those courses. We have visited this restaurant many times over the years when traveling in the area. Unfortunately it has really deteriorated in terms of food, and definitely in service. We were so disappointed with its current state, attitude, and overall arrogance vs. what it delivers. The food certainly isn't what it once was. The way that they attempt to rope themselves off from the locals and their surroundings is uncomfortable and arrogant. There is a lot of show in its service but it misses what high end service is: attentiveness to guests and ensuring that everyone is being taken care of. On our recent visit, there were a lot of theatrics in the service and presentation but little actual service. No water refills, no efforts to resolve a missing main course that never arrived even after everyone else ate, even after multiple requests for the missing food. When we asked to cancel the missing plate we were met with indifference and annoyance from three employees. Never an apology. Never an attempt to actually get the food to the table but just an offer to take it home. There are so many places to eat in the area to eat wonderful food with gracious and attentive service. This restaurant is not one of them. If you like faux fancy with a bit of scorn and standard food presented as innovative, this place hits the spot. read more

This is supposed to be the best restaurant in Puerto Escondido so expectations were high. We had the tongue and the black seafood risotto with a bottle of Merlot type red wine. The risotto was too liquid, the rice a bit too undercooked and the seafood possibly and probably reheated. The tongue was very salty, well cooked but served with corn tortillas which was not a great choice. Altogether the dinner was mediocre at best but it came at a rather steep price. Everything was delicious, the service was outstanding and the presentation was on point. I had a passion fruit ice blended drink with mezcal. At first it was strong but then I grew into it. Then my husband and I shared a tlayuda and it was perfect. It melted in our mouths. It was small compared to the ones you can find every where else. Then we shared the fish ceviche. It was nice and tart with diced ripe mango. This was a pretty decent portion for two people. Then we had the fish with potatoes and salad. I have never enjoyed fish as much as I did today. We saved room for dessert and we were glad we did. The coco brûlée had a medium thick consistency and tasted like coco which we LOVED and the churros were crunchy with chocolate. I was visiting the small beach town of Puerto Escondido (PE) and had inquired from the locals on where their best fare can be found. They recommended this place and the restaurant did not disappoint! The Chef, Manager, (husband & wife team), and staff were on point with everything from service, food presentation, and taste. There is no spectacular view here, as its a small establishment along one of the main roads; however, the quality and taste of food will quickly remind you of why you're here. We had various apptz to start with and a bottle of white. I had the seafood risotto, which was perhaps was one of the best I had. And my parents had separate dishes, which they enjoyed as well.
