What concerned me most was an incident involving a parent of the student who was bullying my daughter. While volunteering during school hours, the parent yelled at my daughter and taped her mouth shut to silence her. Looking back, I feel I should have contacted CPS...ect o When I brought the situation to the principal, I felt that the incident was dismissed rather than properly addressed, the principal let the Same parent volunteer and my daughter was afraid to eat in the cafeteria I had to do something and I was trying to be respectful and let staff deal with it since it's their job... When we ultimately decided to leave the school because of these issues, the school kept our $650 pre registration fee she did not respond to my email regarding it Or showed any policy for a refund. The admin had said it's up to the principal and they don't give refunds and I was ignored .I also tried to contact the senior pastor and church leadership directly but was unable to find a direct way to reach him Or any one for help, the email just leads back to the main email to admin to be controlled. Our experience has taught us that things may seem fine until a serious problem occurs. At that point, I felt the management and especially the principal in 2025-2026 were not transparent but Covering things up on what had happened. As a Christian school that we pay for , I expected the leadership to demonstrate the values they teach. Unfortunately, based on our experience, this is not a place to have a problem. The school is very small, classroom sizes are small, and this allows for the students to recieve the attention and individual support they deserve. Staff focus on safety and self regulation over anything else. Once those basic needs are met they work on educational and life skills. For such a small school there is an abundance of opportunities for the students onsite. Like a pool, laundromat, student kitchen, garden, and playground. Onsite occupational therapy, speech therapy and behavior therapy. Students also get to go out in the community to learn real world skills. Odyssey doesnt use food reinforcement but instead looks at more valuable rewards like prefferred items, activities and praise. They also focus on teaching students how to get they needs met in safe ways instead of using a punishment system. The staff and admin know every students name and build rapport and relationships because they truly care about the students they serve.

This review is about their school as I know nothing about their home facilities…read more This school is meant to cater to children in the Autism Spectrum or Autistic-like symptoms. This is their mission statement, "Odyssey Learning Center is committed to enhancing the lives of children with autism, using a collaborative approach to educate and nurture them in their journey towards independence with integrity and dignity." When you go visit to see if this is the school you want to bring your child to, things are always "perfect" as the classroom you will be checking out is informed prior to you getting there and even if a child is not behaving he/she is moved to a different classroom. If you are visiting and didn't go to the office, the minute any staff sees you they call the classroom your child is in to inform them that you have arrived. My son has a few behavioral issues as most if not all of the children at that school do. He acts the same way at home and I have NEVER had to resort to restraining and neither has anyone that worked with him before or after this school. While at Odyssey I would pick up my son some days exhausted to the point of falling asleep in the car, hungry and with bruises and nail marks embedded on his skin. Every time I expressed my concern to anyone there, they would brush me off and even lie about what had happened. Well as time went by and getting information from different sources whom I will not mention I started discovering disturbing things... If my son reached out and grabbed food from someone else's plate, his lunch was taken away from him so that he would not "steal". On numerous occasions staff would get upset at him and squeeze him by the arms leaving bruises or embedding nails til they opened skin. They rotate turns and the staff that worked with him in the AM was not the same as after lunch but I started noticing that every single time he worked with a specific girl, he was hurt. I even got into an argument with her in the class (all students were gone for the day) for which I was labeled as psycho for. She got fired recently... I know why and if Odyssey could respond honestly without getting into trouble they would now agree that the girl truly was sick in the head because what she got fired for could have even had her arrested. Once I picked my son up and he had what looked like a rug burn on his chin. Nobody knew what it was, how it happened. I was not taking that for an answer. They produced a false "incident report" having a new staff member sign it. I made a stink about that and had the teacher removed from that classroom also and my son continued at that school. Well eventually I found out that the children were being wrapped like burritos in giant yoga mats when they weren't behaving. I saw this a few times. They would call it "sensory". Let me explain something here... it is sensory if the child is in need of that pressure, done properly and for a specific amount of time. Oh and with sensory there aren't 2 women sitting on top of the child. I asked them if they were doing that only to find out that any time my son even looked like he was going to have a melt down he was wrapped. That kids were told "behave otherwise you are getting wrapped". That is not sensory, that is PUNISHMENT AND RESTRAINT! (I've enclosed pics of the mat bitten by restrained children all over the edges) Anyway I found out it was the wrapping that got my son hurt (rug burns on the chin). I can go on about this school, the NUTS that work there, their messed up doings, etc. but I'm surprised you have even read this far. If anyone wants any other information do not hesitate to contact me as I have NO problems telling you what they will not and I have PLENTY of witnesses that can back up anything I will tell you. Parents engaging in conversation is frowned upon and if any parents are talking to each other on campus, they are being monitored. In a meeting the principal lied to my face. She knew she was lying and I knew she was lying. That was very scary as she was bold enough to go ahead with her lie to cover her behind. The staff that works there (other than the teachers) does not need any prior experience working with special needs children. They are finger printed and a little background check is performed. PS when telling the San Juan Unified School District about Odyssey's practices their response was always that Odyssey was a private entity that they contracted with and that there was nothing they could do about anything. Well here... there should be no problems with me YELPING a private entity, A BUSINESS. And if anyone at Odyssey feels the need to address me, do it IN WRITING... choose your words wisely as I will make any and all responses public information. The reason why there is a waiting list to get in is because this school makes learning fun. Well, fun is not the right word, I suppose interdisciplinary is more appropriate. My daughter who is in first grade loves school to the point that she doesn't like weekends. I am hoping this attitude continues throughout her scholastic life (it was not the case with me!). Parental involvement is in every aspect of the school, so if you do not wish to get involved with your child's school, then this is not the school for you. At least two hours per week is required in the lower grades and I have been told that as the kids get older, it is not as necessary. Also there is a mandatory monthly parents meeting that averages about 1 - 2 hours. Fieldtrips are about twice a month, sometimes more. Again, parents volunteer to be a part of the fieldtrips as there is not school bus to take kids to the outings. However, the kids absolutely LOVE IT! Orangevale Open (OV) is considered to be a performing arts school. Kids can participate in drama and at one point there was a choir. I don't know if it will be coming back or not. The students are assigned a "buddy" or mentor starting from Kindergarten. Wow. What an interesting concept to learn! And the older kids get to see what it is like to tutor younger kids. Whenever I tell other parents about the school, the first question they ask is, "Is it a private school?". Technically it is not, but we pay on average $60 a month or so for all the field trips and activities. Very inexpensive when you compare to private tuition costs.

My child attended this preschool from August to December 2024, and as a parent of a child on the spectrum, I was hopeful and optimistic about his experience. I communicated my son's struggles with new environments to Jennifer, who assured me that everything would be fine. While my son did have a challenging start, after three weeks, he began to adjust and thrive. We received weekly pictures and kind messages from Jennifer, which reassured me during tougher days. However, a few months in, I noticed unsettling changes in my son's behavior. As any parent of a child on the spectrum knows, regression can happen for various reasons, and I initially attributed it to illness and the challenges of being around new peers. I tried to address these behaviors at home, relying on strategies I learned from his previous occupational therapist. Then, an alarming incident occurred. After picking him up one day, my son revealed that a classmate--whom we'll refer to as Student A--had hit him. When I asked if he informed the teacher, he said yes, and described how Student A could be both nice and mean. I didn't think much of it at the time, believing the teachers had handled the situation. But then, on December 29, everything changed. My son came to me in distress, saying that Student A was bullying him, throwing things at him, and even touching him inappropriately. He confided that he hadn't told me sooner because he feared that Student A would come to our house and harm us and our dog. Shockingly, he said this threat originated from his teacher. My son was in turmoil, hyperventilating and terrified of the repercussions of speaking out. This incident has fundamentally altered my son's ability to play and interact with others, not only at school but even at the park. We immediately brought this to Jennifer's attention, as well as to our son's doctor. While Jennifer initially reached out, I later sent her a detailed email outlining the entire incident, yet to this day, I have not received a response. I filed a report, but the unfortunate reality is that the young ages of the children involved make it difficult to pursue any action--especially when the teachers deny any wrongdoing. It's disheartening and infuriating. My son has been profoundly affected by this experience, requiring therapy and now grappling with trauma that could have been prevented. I urge parents to carefully consider their options when selecting a preschool. Ensure that your child will be protected and supported. My son deserved better, and no child should have to endure what he went through. Please, take this into account when making your decision. Your child's safety and well-being depend on it. I'm also willing to show anyone proof of the messages that were sent back and forth to Jennifer ( the messages contain more details of the incident that happened)

It deserves commendation that this relatively small school has such committed staff and it was evident from the moment you walked into the ceremony. It was evident in their warm greeting as you entered through the doors, their effort to keep the focus on the kids and their families and to the plenty of security personnel present to keep an eye on things. While not a parent of a student (just an aunt) I was moved to write this review because this small staff has raised a large sum in scholarships to provide to their students. The staff is clearly bonded to the kids and it was touching. This year 8 kids rec'd scholarships including the munchkin I was supporting today. It's quite a phenomenal feat to raise these funds and this act shows genuine commitment to their students. Thank you Charter Choices for your commitment to the children.
