He wouldn't re-schedule for later that evening so when I asked how soon we could re-schedule, she offered me an appointment in a week and a half. On that day nobody called and Bruce never showed. When I called an hour after Bruce was supposed to be here, Maria told me that my appointment must not "Be in his book". When I asked her if she could call Bruce and find out if he could still make it that day, she said she would, and that she'd call me right back. She never did. I left two voice mails over the following week and a half, neither of which were returned. On my third attempt Maria answered, and when I asked about re-scheduling she told me Bruce was very busy and couldn't fit me in it until nearly a month later, on September 13th. I said OK. Annoyed, and not wanting to delay my many projects any longer, I went ahead and hired a drywall contractor, a painter, and a roofer to get my more pressing projects under way, but I thought I might still offer Nulook the big remodel project (Gut, insulate,7 new windows, 2 new doors, all new electric, new drywall and trim, painting and flooring) for our 10 x 18' enclosed front porch, plus installing flooring in a hallway, if they could complete the work before Thanksgiving. Well today is the 13th. An hour before my appointment with Bruce, as half-expected, Maria called and informed me that she had cancelled all of Bruce's appointments for the next three and a half weeks because he was so busy! She didn't offer to re-schedule, and I didn't ask. OK, so it took me longer than it should have, but I finally got the message. Our house is located in Beechwood, a mixed race and lower income neighborhood in the city. When I first contacted Nulook via the web they were enthusiastic about coming over right away and said they could fit my work right in. I told them that we would not require financing, and would be paying cash. When they cancelled my first 5:00pm appointment, Maria told me Bruce had gotten delayed on another job. When I suggested that maybe Bruce could stop by later that evening, she told me "No, we don't like to be in your area after dark". Apparently Bruce and/or Maria had finally realized I was in Beechwood. Since that night they have managed to make it clear that they are not interested in my business. It's funny, my wife and I are middle-aged, white, college educated professionals and had never before experienced this not-so-subtle prejudice that I always assumed must be an occasional, and painful, experience limited to my minority friends and neighbors. From my privileged perspective it took quite a while before it dawned on me that I was actually being redlined. Over the 30+ years we have owned our city home we've hired many, many, contractors for all sorts of projects, and have never before run into this revolting practice. Your mileage may vary but if you need work done on your home, or business, within the city limits, you may want to look elsewhere.

I found Axis Builders on Yelp when I was looking for someone to build a wooden fence for my back yard. They were very communicative during the pre-build process when we tried to map out where the fence would go. A couple days before construction was to begin, I noticed that they had called 811 and had had the area flagged for underground wires (again, they are on the ball). The fence looks amazing! My neighbors across the street, seeing how speedy and nice the fence went in, walked over and got Axis's card for to build their deck. And another neighbor, seeing my pictures online, also will hire Axis to build a fence. To say that I am happy with the service is an understatement. The whole process was stress-free with no drama.

I had looked at the work briefly, from a distance, because he had promised to return and touch up anything that needed it. It's just a slap-and-dash job. Once I paid (in cash), a promised return to rectify any problems never happened. Important parts of the work are not finished, and my calls and messages are being ignored. Had an uneasy feeling when he showed up with nothing but a regular car. No crew, no drop cloths. The attached photos show just SOME of the way he left the job after taking my money. Also: I have filed a complaint with the NYS attorney generals' office. Storan undoubtedly thinks little old ladies aren't computer-savvy enough to find out personal information about people who defraud them. It would've been so easy to defuse this bomb, Jim.
