I brought an antique chair to Allison's Furniture (1878 E. University Drive, Tempe, AZ) early February, needing structural repair to create a seat and to enable upholstering.
The gentleman who received the chair indicated he had purchased the business recently. He wrote the invoice reflecting my requests, indicating that service would be completed within two weeks. He mentioned he did not do the work personally, but the person who would perform the work was very experienced with over 25 years of performing such work. He promised I'd be happy with the results.
My chair essentially didn't have an established seat and needed reupholstering.
Allison was not responsive, did not provide any updates, seemed at times not aware of where my chair was in their shop. After six weeks, I received my chair from Allison's Furniture (1878 E. University Drive, Tempe, AZ) with the two installed pieces of wood reflected in the image below (bright new looking pieces of wood at the front of the chair). The same gentleman who received the chairs previously and that had written the invoice, claimed the work took two hours at a cost of $180.00. Because the repair had taken so long, he offered a discount, which I rejected (thinking if you are not giving this perceived work to me free then I do not want or need your discount. I paid his full price and took my chair). The chair still did not have any structure to secure upholstery or an ability for a person to sit on. Here is Allison's Furniture's work - costing $180.00, which took their 25 year's experienced craft person two hours to complete.
Obviously, the chair still required repair. Luckily, I found another vendor (Christina's Upholstery), and thankfully, (Christina's Upholstery) was qualified. Christina's Upholstery constructed framing (which required more than just two simple pieces of wood), created a slip seat with webbing, sent me samples of velvet to determine which fabric I wanted to use to upholster the seat. Christina's Upholstery was highly informative, passionate, caring, providing updates throughout the process, and recommendations on batting fabric, and specific recommendations on the types of tacks that should be used to hold the chair's value (spit tacks). The chair turned out beautifully and with all of that, Christina's Upholstery only charged ($175.00), $5.00 less that what Allison's Furniture charged for their slipshod work, which left me no better suited than when they (Allison's Furniture,1878 E. University Drive, Tempe, AZ) had first received my chair.
Again, beware, if you value your items, your time, and your cash, please stay clear of Allison' Furniture. They lack integrity and do not have an earthly clue on restoring your cherished family heirlooms. read more
