It's in front of an apartment house, did not see anyone around. I took my photos of the tree. It actually just looks like an ugly tree, so knotted, tortured, and misshapen, but there were odd things that hung on the tree, mostly trinkets, baubles and bead necklaces of different colors. The story goes that in the late 19th century this tree was the gathering place for a coven of witches. The witches cast a curse on the town when the city cut the tree down ahead of the annual May Day celebration. Exactly 11 months to the day after the tree was cut down, a historic deadly tornado hit Louisville. During the storm, lightning struck the stump of the old witches tree and a new tree began growing there... not a pretty tree but this ugly tree that stands there now. So now locals of the community leave small tributes on and around the tree to keep on the witches' good side and to bring good luck. This is a stop included on the Old Louisville historic ghost tour. Please be respectful of private property when visiting. Review #3912

I like that it's in Iroquois park the heart of the community pretty much, besides valumarket. I live in right in this community but I did not know this fair was held annually. There were plenty of booths lined next to the amphitheater on both sides and food trucks as well. In the amphitheater they had performances from local bands and awards given out to americana community members that have contributed to its success. This is a small festival yet very interesting. There were activities, things to check out (perhaps buy) and people to see... And learn a few things about the community. I'll be checking it out next year for sure.

I would say that the UnFair needs to find a bigger location, but the location -- Mag Bar's backyard -- is such a big part of the event. But to take a step back, for those who are unaware, the UnFair is the smaller cousin to the St. James Court Art Fair. It's a rebel, a renegade, and seeks to showcase local artists who maybe don't have the hundreds of bucks to fork over to be a part of the big show. Plus, there's something so damn-the-man about thumbing your nose at St. James by holding an art show just outside its boundaries, like it's saying it doesn't need to be declared "art" by the St. James organizers to be shown in Old Louisville during the first weekend in May. That spirit is a bit of what makes Louisville so "weird," and while I very much appreciate and enjoy St. James, there is a definite place for the UnFair as well. And as for the items at the UnFair, they run the gamut -- everything from paintings to tchotkes to prints to scarves to artistically mutilated Barbie dolls to Star Wars-inspired and KFC-themed art. I'm still sad I didn't get the painting of Colonel Sanders' likeness on the side of a fried chicken wing. It's an experience to take in all that this small area includes, and you can find some great deals if something tickles your fancy. There are also some picnic tables in the middle of the space, and if you're lucky, you can find a great place to sit out for a few minutes. Plus there's always Mag Bar, just a few steps away, ready with a cold brew. The UnFair is not to be missed!

Anyway, I happened upon this mural during a walk with my sister this last weekend. Murals from the Art Cartel seem to feature this sort of trippy style and subject matter. Not as immediately recognizable as The Art of Kacy or Damon Thompson, but always clearly marked. This mural is on the East side of the Oak St Market building where the road is one way from the other direction. That makes this a more pedestrian friendly find, than one you spy when driving. Seeing murals like this and where they are located makes me wish I could request a mural on my neighbor's fence so I can see it every time I look out my window.

Apparently there is a hidden pumpkin but we weren't told until near the end. It was interesting to see how they repurposed items from the Halloween event. When you hit the fork you take a left down the "one way". There is suppose to be a guy flagging or waving you on but on our visit he just sat there so we thought he was telling us to not go that way and we ended up taking a 3 mile detour through the park and and circling around. You can buy tickets at the main entrance booth once you go the right way or you can purchase online. The online pre purchase is recommended because evidently they can sell out. Pricing is pretty high. It is $35 a car load. I will say this. It's is very pretty and cool but extremely repetitive. You drive very slowly through a wooded trail for a mile or so. The woods is decorated with ginger bread house facades and other holiday type buildings. They have a lot of fake stained glass Christmas's decor of popular Christmas figures, movie/tv stars and cartoons. They have Christmas music playing in different sections throughout. At the very end they do have a cool Ferris wheel penguin decoration that leads you into a beautiful tunnel of lights you drive under. Which is the highlight of the visit. Overall I can say me and the kids finally experienced this. The workers here all kinda had a bad attitude and seemed lazy. Which I get it. It's cold and nobody likes working during the holidays. But if you are charging $35 a carload for Christmas fun then maybe act like you want to be there. As mentioned the decorations were very lovely and pretty. But we all was disappointed in how repetitive it was. They could of really broke it off in sections and each section having a different theme or decor style and it would be immensely better. I'm not sure we will come back unless major changes are made. I'm glad we finally did and seen this yearly attraction. However, if every year is exactly the same it just isn't worth seeing twice. There is all kinds of cool free light shows in Lousiville that offers more variety.

But, the Confederate Statue was just removed so when I walked from Cardinal Boulevard to the Speed Museum (which recently opened re-opened and gives me another reason to be on campus) I paid attention to what seemed to stand in it's place. I was surprised to read that the memorial park has stood here since 2012. From UofL's website -- "Charles H. Parrish, Jr. Freedom Park tells the story of African Americans in Louisville and the Commonwealth through a series of 10 information obelisks, each focusing on an era or topic specific to Louisville, and 10 glass panels detailing the contributions of some of the giants of Louisville's civil rights struggle." The "park" is well done -- but it's not so much a park. No swing sets or basketball hoops. The park sits in the triangular land between 2nd and 3rd Streets. (Where the Playhouse is). It's mostly a fancy place with to kill time while waiting on the bus, waiting for a table at Griff's or to catch your breath if you can't find a parking spot on campus and parked a mile away. There are benches to sit upon and cool bios about the 10 honored African American Louisvillians. If you enjoy history, admiring bravery and are in the area -- it's clean, it's safe and it's free.
