When you doom scroll, you come across many different places that are true hidden gems. Door To Nowhere, or Heigold House, is definitely an oddity and salute to the past. Some housekeeping, you know, things to know about this place. BE CAREFUL. This sits on a roundabout island with steady traffic. Be mindful to the traffic flow and businesses nearby (I parked at a nearby business off the road and walked over here). Be kind to the natural beauty that surrounds this. And most of all, be respectful. As I said, this sits on a roundabout with flowerbeds surrounding it. Whether you are facing front, as in looking at the front of the façade, or looking from the rear, please stay on the sidewalks provided. Take in the informational plaques as well. Built by Christian H Heigold, a successful stonecutter. Majority of the house was completed in 1853. Heigold was a master at stonecutting and completed the home with busts of Presidents George Washington and James Buchanan. Heigold was also a staunch opponent of the 'Know Nothing Party,' and anti-immigration political party and I would like to think that he built his house with all the busts was a big middle finger to those that were anti-immigration. This façade sat in what was known as the The Point neighborhood, which was favored by those that moved to the city from the New Orleans area. Once Louisville diverted the Beargrass Creek away from downtown, this place started to flood annually. Shifting people away from the neighborhood and then the Great Flood of 1937 happened. Slowly the city started buying houses and demolishing them. Ultimately using the land as a dump site. Then this façade was listed on the National Registry of Historical Places. Remained in that area which became Thruston Park. That is until a developer bought the land adjacent to this and build condos. They moved this massive beast, 70,000-pounds, across River Road to where it sits today.

How did it get its name? [Louisville KY]…read more We drove to this location on the corner of Sixth Street and Park Avenue in Louisville where there is a famous landmark called the Witches' Tree. It's in front of an apartment house, did not see anyone around. I took my photos of the tree. It actually just looks like an ugly tree, so knotted, tortured, and misshapen, but there were odd things that hung on the tree, mostly trinkets, baubles and bead necklaces of different colors. The story goes that in the late 19th century this tree was the gathering place for a coven of witches. The witches cast a curse on the town when the city cut the tree down ahead of the annual May Day celebration. Exactly 11 months to the day after the tree was cut down, a historic deadly tornado hit Louisville. During the storm, lightning struck the stump of the old witches tree and a new tree began growing there... not a pretty tree but this ugly tree that stands there now. So now locals of the community leave small tributes on and around the tree to keep on the witches' good side and to bring good luck. This is a stop included on the Old Louisville historic ghost tour. Knocking one star off because....there is no information on this....thing…read more Really, this is a semi-convenient cut-thru from the end of Vernon Ave in Clifton to Brownsboro Road and it has a funny name. But why is it named that? Google tells me that it was the former site of a Civil War fort. But that is all I got from the Interwebz. I totally get the point of the steps, for use between the neighborhoods. But you really need to know that it is there to even be able to use it. There is a sign at the dead end of Vernon, but there is no sign or indication of the stairs from the Brownsboro side. Another star off for poor directions. But anyway....it is there and now, thanks to Yelp you know where to find it.

It was painted on the side of a building near the parking lot of a Speedway gas station. It is colorful, bright, and simply AWESOME!!! Very well done and fun representation of the city of Louisville that is bound to attract lots of eyeballs especially on the first Saturday in may for the historic and famed Kentucky derby race. Overall very cool mural that I'm glad is here. Definitely a fun and cool photo op.

After visiting the website I learned a map is available to download. While downtown I visited the Louisville Visitors Center, which is near the Hyatt Regency, and I noticed a painted door I'd never seen before. I was so excited! Time to find more. I had heard good things in past years and I couldn't wait to get to experience it myself! Louisville Swig is a party to remember! Or...since it is a repeal day party with more liquor than you could even imagine and very little food...if you aren't careful, it could be a party you can't help but forget! Lol! So prepare before hand with some pizza or tacos or something to help keep you upright with all the boozy offerings. And put those ride share apps on your phone to good use! There was seemingly endless entertainment, with more to see around every turn! Just past the first room with local beers...was a sign beckoning you to the speakeasy! In the speakeasy, there was not just Old Forester beverages...but also Hound Dog Press where you could press a postcard and live music and photo booths, Oh My! Making our way to the main room, we were pleased to see people with pizza boxes handing out Wick's pieces all around! What a great idea! And a tasty one too! We started to make our way around the main room, sampling the drinks that appealed to us (scotch! wine! Ballotin! Rivulet! champagne!). The main complaint I had, as with most events of this size and nature, is the dearth of trash receptacles. One only has so much carrying-in-one's-hand-space. I was always looking around for a place to get rid of my empties. The food that was available was great as well! BBQ, a mac & cheese bar, sushi, and sweets! I don't know if I could pick a favorite....but a build-your-own mac and cheese *IS* a pretty awesome idea! More live music, dancing, and gorgeous outfits donned by all...an exceptional party and a spectacular time! I was lucky enough to attend as someone's plus one at no cost to myself...but I would ABSOLUTELY buy tickets for next year's event! With what you get just by being there...it is more than worth the price of entry! I hope I have the opportunity to attend next year!

So many people dressed the part and looked great! We arrived right before the VIP hour started at 6:00pm. The check in process outside was kind of a cluster. We stood in line outside to have our IDs checked and wristbands applied but the staff were confused on the process. When we finally entered the event a staff handed us a ticket but didn't say anything about the ticket. I asked the staff upstairs in the VIP area about the ticket but she didn't know what it was for. We enjoyed the bourbon cocktail, champagne, and hors d'oeuvre's. Photo booths are my favorite and I was excited to see one there. Around 6:40pm we asked the upstairs staff if we could go downstairs to start sampling... she told us to go ahead and that everything was open to us. On our arrival downstairs the staff told us that we had to go back up to the VIP area until 7:00pm. I wish we could have had a small window to sample the food and drinks before the general admission ticket holders arrived. I really enjoyed the pork and broccoli salad from Martins BBQ. I had several of the chocolate martinis from Four Roses. I loved the little martini glasses that the chocolate martinis were served in. My fiancé enjoyed stamping his own ice with the roses stamp for his bourbon on the rocks. I was excited to see Titos there with two drinks. I tried the cranberry mule and it was very refreshing. I felt like the space was a little too small for the amount of people there. It was hard to navigate around people to try everything. On our way out we finally figured out where to turn in our tickets for the VIP bag. The VIP bag included 2 glasses and a set of Clayton & Crume leather coaster. Overall we had a good time at the event but I was surprised at how disorganized it was in it's 6th year. I would attend Louisville Swig event again but I don't know if I would pay full price for the VIP. I would definitely pay for the VIP if we had access to everything before the official event started. Freddy farm bureau is a public art fixture and long time staple of Kentucky state fair…read more For years Freddy has been either terrifying or bringing pleasure to passer Byers and children at the Kentucky state fair. Long time ago he was a standing still structure. As time has gone on he is now seated and has a man hidden somewhere with a microphone and he will talk and say hi to you and your kiddos. Overall a very fun and recognizable Kentucky gem. I can't imagine a Kentucky state fair with ole Freddy. Cool Kentucky tradition.

This piece of public art is well hidden inside the massive expo center. While all the events like shows, fair, exhibits etc are held downstairs in the multiple wings. They do have an upstairs area with conference rooms and things. That is where you will see Hermes hanging out right at the top of the flight of stairs in the middle of the south wing area just past the bathrooms on the outer concourse. Statute is medium in sized but well done. Kinda sits on a loft like so it is slightly visible form the ground level. Overall pretty cool statue. Lousiville does not have many things that's I've witnessed that taps into geek mythology so it's always cool to see things like this.

Tom Moore statue is a statue that sits in the fairgrounds of Lousiville Kentucky that sits out in…read morefront of the entrances of freedom hall and the Kentucky fair and expo center out on a small island near the parking lot. The statue is of a man riding a horse. So who is Tom Moore? Good question I have no idea. So I let Google do my homework. Turns out he is the trainer of the most championships at the world championship horse show. The Kentucky fair and expo center along with its shared fairgrounds buildings of freedom hall, broad bent arena and old cardinal stadium ( now tore down) has hosted all kinds of random championships involving live stock, horses, etc etc over the years. There always a random event held at the fairgrounds every weekend it seems. So it would be a safe bet that Tom Moore won a lot of those championships here in Lousiville. Either way it's a cool statue. Unique and different. I now know a useless knowledge factoid of which trainer holds the most horse show championships. So that's cool.
