Apple strudel
Cristel M.

I stopped into Allegro Deli twice recently. My first visit was on a weekend morning, just to check out the place and see what they had. It's bigger inside than I expected, and in additional to the deli counter, there are packaged foods and even kitchenware and knickknacks. It was fun to look around, and I ended up buying some apple strudel and spinach strudel. Both were very good. A few days later, I returned to try the Lunch Box special, which is only $5.50. On the day I was there, the main entree was a chicken cutlet. The meal also came with a choice of mashed or boiled potatoes, beet salad, soup and a blueberry compote. That's a ton of food for the price! The chicken was so-so, but I loved the mashed potatoes and beet salad, which contained onions and peas. It was delicious. I was told the soup was vegetable. It was in a light-colored broth and contained potatoes and grains. The soup was cold in the deli container, and I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be eaten cold or heated up. I heated it up. It was pretty good, but not particularly memorable. I'm used to seeing compote with a thicker syrup, but this one was completely liquid with a small amount of blueberries in it. I was told it should be drank. I tried only a spoonful - I will pour some in a glass and try it as a beverage soon. Both times I stopped in, there were several other customers inside. It seems to be a popular place. I've only knocked off stars because while I was picking up lunch, I saw multiple employees wearing their masks below their noses, including the cashier and a man who was going back and forth from the kitchen to the counter. I want to return, but I will not go back until Covid risks have passed, as I don't think they are taking appropriate safety precautions.

I love this place... My favorite would be the chicken kabobs. Can eat those everyday. Everything I've tried I give thumbs up.

Has classic bagel style which is about as authentic of New York as you can get. The prices are usually good on bagels and sandwiches as well. A lot of bagels and bialys to get. It also has lots of cream cheese and other spreads. The most famous of these is the cream cheese and lox, but of course there's much more beyond that. It's about $2 for a regular bagel. Then add a few bucks or so depending on choice of toppings. Choose a simple spread like cream cheese or maybe load it up with something more. You can even make a big sandwich packed with meat if you like that. Has some pretty good vegetarian choices. There's toppings like avocado and vegetables or maybe get a salad. Also the sandwiches which looks and smells fresh. There's a lot more than just bagels to get here. Even though it's best known for the bagels, there's also bialys. It's kind of like bagels with no holes. There's also plenty of sides like salads.

You could definitely come here for breakfast or lunch - they had a really big menu! I loved the parmesan oregano bagel & got it with eggs and cheese. It came with 2 eggs so it made the sandwich very filling even though the bagels are on the smaller size. We also loved their latke. It was super thick & perfectly crispy on the outside.

Unfortunately this isn't really a place I can find a pescatarian, gluten free meal, so unlikely I'll be able to try it myself. Hope you can! It sounds awesome.

There's seating inside, and I appreciated that the tables weren't packed too closely together. It felt comfortable and not overcrowded. They had about 7-8 varieties of pączki to choose from. I grabbed a dozen rose (a classic go-to for me) and also tried the limoncello and the caramel bacon. The limoncello was really good--the custard lemon filling inside was flavorful and smooth. The rose was delicious, just how it should be. The caramel bacon was something new for me; it had that savory-sweet combo that's definitely a specific taste. Not for everyone, but interesting to try! Overall, a solid spot to grab pączki for Fat Tuesday.
