When I visited this past Saturday, I walked over from town (an easy walk), but there was plenty of parking at the Trails Center, too. I just spent a few minutes here, enjoying the views, but I have been happy to read my book on a bench with those views if I hadn't had such a packed itinerary for my time in Columbia!

Travel options are few and far between at best. Last train on Saturdays are at 7:05 pm. No outlets to plug and charge your phone, yet they have a box with chargers for $8 to rent. This station is also connected to the Greyhound Bus Terminal (in the back), yet the seating area is closed at 10 pm leaving waiting passengers sitting outside in the wee hours of the morning awaiting the Flix|Fullington|Greyhound buses. Amtrak really needs to update this station.

The rooms are lovely, the bathrooms (especially those with double tubs) are luxurious, and the house itself is brimming with fascinating history and comfortable nooks to relax in. Bookshelves filled to bursting (and Wendy has read them all), kooky UK board games stacked alongside classic favorites, and gorgeous Georgian interiors are some of the things you'll encounter while walking the halls. Outside, an inviting patio gives you a wonderful view of Wendy's beautifully landscaped garden, where four legged friends and their owners can throw a tennis ball or relax on lawn chairs. The kitchen is fully equipped and open for use between meals, which is a plus for twenty-somethings like myself looking to heat up a late night snack. My friends approached the idea of a bed and breakfast with some trepidation; we'd never been to one before, and didn't know if it would be "our scene." I can say enthusiastically that it was our best couple's retreat to date! The rooms offered a great deal of space and privacy so we were able to meet in one place and chat through the night without disturbing the other guests. The evening wine and cheese was the perfect way to end a long day of travelling, and Marietta and the nearby towns offered anything we needed insofar as groceries within a ten minute ride. The best part of our stay, as you'll hear repeated in many reviews, was our hostess: Wendy. Wendy is a truly remarkable individual with a wealth of stories about the house, the surrounding area, and her own fascinating personal life. As a "concierge" she was incredibly helpful, steering us away from some of the local gimmicks and providing us information on an event that ended up being the surprise hit of the weekend: The Falmouth Goat Races! Between the rooms and Wendy's constant attention to our needs, we felt as comfortable as if we were among family. I would recommend this to anyone of any age, and will definitely be coming back in the future!

It is a river town and is a charming place to stay if you want to visit the area attractions in Lancaster, Lititz, or York. The Ascot House was built in 1800 and has been lovingly renovated by Wendy. Wendy is the best b&b host I have ever encountered and I love her British accent and stories. We were greeted as soon as we arrived and were shown to our room (the Essex). The Essex room is upstairs and the entrance is outside, but you have your own private porch which is great. It is also convenient if you have dogs as we did, because you can walk them or go into the backyard without going through the main house. Wendy is truly the most pet friendly b&b I have ever been to as well, and made sure the dogs had a water bowl on the porch soon after we arrived. She will also pet sit for you if need be for a reasonable rate. We promptly joined another couple on the deck for wine and cheese and had a great time talking to them and Wendy. There are two taverns in town that are in close walking distance, McLeary's and Shanks Tavern. Both have live music, but McLearys is larger and open on Saturday unlike Shanks. We had a great time exploring the town of Lititz on the Saturday and toured the PA Wolf Sanctuary which I highly recommend. Wendy is glad to provide any recommendations you need and we enjoyed the restaurant she recommended in Lititz. Wilbur's Chocolate Company from 1884 is also located in Lititz. The dining room is very formal and decorated in a beautiful manner. We were treated to many courses at breakfast - one morning we had a blueberry cake, fruit, and eggs and bacon, and the next morning we had yogurt and fruit, apple turnover, and waffles with true clotted cream. You can also get your own pot of tea which is a nice touch. You should not need lunch after eating breakfast here. The Lancaster area is very quiet on Sunday so you might have to venture farther for attractions that are open. Our favorite activities were just walking around the town of Marietta and looking at the beautiful 19th century homes, especially along the railroad tracks. They have a Candlelight Tour of some of the old homes every first Sunday in December and we have already booked to go back to the Ascot House because it was truly that special. The Susquehanna is a beautiful river and is located just behind the railroad tracks. Yes, you can hear the trains go by in the middle of the night so I would recommend ear plugs or taking some Benadryl. I wouldn't let that deter you from visiting this b&b which is located in one of the cutest small towns you can think of. There are also lots of wineries in the area that I want to try next time we return to the area. Make sure you check out the Chickie's Rock hike which is very easy and has a great view of the Susquehanna.

I still got a knock on the door, a steaming cup of coffee and homemade biscotti waiting for me in the dining room. Jim and Jean were wonderful hosts; and the Victorian house they designed and built together is magnificent. My dinner plans fell through one evening and they graciously invited me to join them. It was a lovely meal with great conversation. The breakfast is delicious and made with fresh ingredients - Jean made me a bowl of yogurt w/ homemade granola and fresh raspberries and blackberries, followed by free-range organic scrambled eggs, fresh steamed asparagus, canadian bacon, and an english muffin. And of course a glass of OJ and a big mug of french press coffee. The house is an amazing project they accomplished together; there is an album of 'before pictures' tucked away in the parlor. And the details in every corner of the house are truly unique. There are a number of books and magazines on York, the surrounding cities, and Victorian homes sprinkled about the house. And there are beautiful paintings (by Jean) on the walls of countryside scenes in England; and a lone sheep by the door, a remnant of the original house. I stayed two nights in the Grecian room, which had a gorgeous bathroom, an attached patio, and of course a luxurious fluffy bed! This is a wonderful place to stay, while visiting the area. Jim, is from a mennonite family, so he can answer a lot of questions about the mennonite history in PA and also he was born in Tanzania while his parents were on a mission trip. We went in winter with snow so there were many aspects, like the balcony and grounds which we did not get to explore. the house seems smaller than it looks. you will only have accesss to view your room- the parlor and dining. this B&B has only two guest rooms. it's a very very intimate atmosphere- if you want your space- this stay would not be ideal for you. expect to be greeted and chatted up whenever you enter or leave and asked about what you will do while in york. Jean and Jim are very nice and have lots of york knowledge and their own personal stories to share. But make sure you have time to chat when you engage them. THIS IS NOT A PLACE TO GO ON ROMANTIC NIGHT AND EXPECT TO MAKE OUT. YOU CAN HEAR EVERYTHING IN THIS HOUSE AND THE BED CREAKS. you can hear discussions thruought the home. BED IS SUPER SOFT- I prefer firm beds The breakfast is ok ok. Its pretty basic. I felt the eggs were cooked with a lot of butter. Overall Im glad I went there. But I am not sure I would recommend it immediately.

When I first drove from Ohio to Philadelphia (New Stanton to Valley Forge), the price was just…read moreunder $9 for the trip. The Turnpike needed repair and refurbishment. They celebrated 50 years, but it looked like many things were from that first year. When I left the Philadelphia area after 8 years, the price of that same trip was just under $12, and they had some construction happening. I took a similar trip in 2006, and the price rise was unexpected and now, this week, it was almost $22. I can commend them for actually making some improvements on the road, finishing some construction after 16 years, and re-building service plazas. The poor fuel cashiers don't have to sit out in the freezing cold or blazing heat at most plazas I visited. However, I wonder how much the Union is getting out of it--too much, I think. I remember a woman at the Norristown exit who pocketed a few of my $5 bills when I gave her a $10 bill. They really don't need that, do they? Union members always make too much money anyway. It wasn't great, but it wasn't awful travelling so far on the Turnpike but they need to fix the prices to better reflect everyone using it, not just the people working it.

After sitting in rush hour traffic for 20 minutes at the toll plaza, traffic was moving slowly the whole way east... If only it wasn't so boring. They try - there are rest stops every 20-30 miles or so, but damn - so boring! Also - if you're going under 90 - you're gunna get run over. A lead foot's dream :) (Yet they still only get 3 because it's really damn boring!)

Our room was cozy and featured a wood-burning fireplace. Right outside our door was a stockpile of pre-cut wooden logs, not to mention a beautiful deck that overlooks the forest-covered property. The house is located within a deep, dense canopy, and if you are looking for peace and serenity, this is the place for you. The outdoor area features a calming brook, a swing-set, a fire pit, and so on. Each morning, our gracious hosts left coffee on the deck for us to enjoy upon waking up. Afterwords, we made our way inside to the dining area, where George & Bonnie provided a delicious breakfast tailored to our individual preferences (my wife is a vegetarian). Bonnie's pumpkin bread was a real highlight! We stayed for 2 nights, and were absolutely stuffed to the brim after each breakfast. That's exactly the kind of service and hospitality you are looking for at a B&B! We have nothing but positive praise for this experience. Thank you George & Bonnie!!
