For all of my cats throughout the last few years…read more I trusted them, they were always gentle and compassionate, but in the last year I haven't been impressed. First I noticed scheduling issues. I confirmed via their texting platform a certain date and time for one of my appointments, and somehow the time magically changed where I ended up being late when I showed up at the office. And they assured me I had the time incorrect. Thankfully I had the automated text saved, and they were wrong. The time was correct on my end. Not sure if anyone else has had trouble with this, but I'd go ahead and be sure to confirm with the front office for appointments as well as with the automated texts. Second is the true reason for my one star review. Just this past week I took my indoor/outdoor cat into Patrick (without an appointment, but she was a current patient) because she was showing mild signs of paralysis in her hind end. They graciously fit her in to be seen. I never spoke to a doctor when we arrived. The Vet tech spoke to me in the waiting room briefly and took her to the back. They said they'd be in touch later in the day. The vet called as promised. They told me all of her vitals were normal. They took an Xray and noticed that her stomach was abnormally full and told me she just maybe ate something that will eventually leave her system. They put her on fluids and offered to keep her overnight for my own peace of mind which I accepted (They never offered to do bloodwork which I think is slightly odd). A vet tech called the next morning and said she was showing signs of improvement and that I could take her home later in the afternoon. I picked her up as directed, and when I let her out of her carrier, she was 200% worse at least. She was swimming across the floor on her stomach and lost all ability to walk on all 4 limbs. She tried to eat but was unable and she also urinated on herself within 10 minutes of being home. I rapidly called Patrick back to discuss my concerns and the vet tech assured me she had improved over the day before and to just confine her to a small space and to call in 2 days to give them an update. After hanging up the phone it took me about 30 seconds to put her back in the crate and rush her to the Emergency Vet. She was triaged right away, upon arrival. In the end, My sweet angel passed away 2 days later from rapid neurological decline and heart failure. It was quick & tragic. Her body is in the process of getting an autopsy for further testing to hopefully rule out anything that could be contagious to my 2 other cats. Although most likely it was Bromethalin Poisoning. A neurotoxin found in some rat poisons. Also note that the Vet at Patrick said it wasn't Rat poison since Rat poison is an anticoagulant. Maybe he should do his research because Bromethalin (a somewhat new ingredient on the market being used in rat poison now) is in fact a Neurotoxin that is tasty and a rapid killer to cats. If I knew that this product existed, My cat would have become on indoor cat 100% a long time ago. I'm not saying that Patrick could have saved her life. But the dismissiveness and lack of concern was prevalent. They didn't seem to care about her well being and future. They never thought to do bloodwork to get more answers. They weren't proactive at all in my opinion. Their bed side manner was nonexistent. Maybe they favor Dogs over Cats? And I never spoke to a vet in person. The only people I spoke to was the vet tech that took her from me in the waiting room and the other vet tech that handed her off to me in the waiting room. We never once saw an exam room together. For Shots and routine things sure, Go to Patrick. For any type of sickness or any level of emergency, I'd suggest going else where. My other 2 cats are no longer patients of Patrick as of recent. I requested all of their records be emailed to me after I gave Patrick the call update they requested on my cat. Which was SUPER fun to tell them she died. :( I still have yet to receive said Records. Super disappointed.

I took my cat McCormick there because he wasn't eating or using the bathroom. They did some blood…read morework and prescribed an oral medication for two weeks. After that, they told me to come back for more blood work. A week and a half later, McCormick was eating even less, losing weight, and still not using the bathroom. I told them I had to stop the medication because it was clearly making him worse. Their only solution was to keep him on the same medicine the one that caused all the side effects to get worse in the first place. I paid for another round of that medication but didn't give it to him. Instead, I took him to All Creatures, explained everything while crying my eyes out, and they immediately felt a large lump on his body during a basic physical exam. Something Patrick's completely missed. All Creatures confirmed with an x-ray that it was a tumor. They gave me special food to help him eat again and treated me with such care and compassion. The doctor there even shared her own personal experience of losing a pet, and it meant so much to feel seen in that moment. I'm devastated that my baby had cancer that went unnoticed for almost a month because Patrick's never did a full exam or offered an x-ray. I will never go back to Patrick's, and I'll warn anyone I can to do the same. All Creatures, on the other hand, I can't thank enough for helping me through the hardest time.

She's not quick to want to test, test, test for money, money, money - something anyone can appreciate. She keeps the patient and the human in mind always. I knew that I wanted it to be done at home where she would be most comfortable, but I didn't know how that worked so I started searching. I saw that Dignity Bridge had a lot of recommendations on a local facebook group I'm in, but they didn't have a website. I decided to give them a call and leave a message since it was already after normal business hours. Their voicemail message suggested texting for a faster response so I hung up and did that instead. Shortly after, I got a response answering all my questions about pricing, who they recommend for cremation, and availability. Dr Evans and I texted back and forth multiple times and were working on finding a time to move forward with the euthanasia. The next day, Dr. Evans let me know of an opening in her schedule that evening which is when I was trying to schedule her. My dog ended up passing naturally overnight so I was no longer in need of her services. I appreciated her following up and let her know the circumstances. She wrote me a very nice response offering her sympathy and to let her know if they could help with anything. Although I did not end up having to use their services, the interaction I had was worthy of a five star experience. I hope not to be faced with making that difficult decision again any time soon, but if so, I will absolutely be calling Dr Evans and Dignity Bridge again.

Illegal Treatment and Animal Cruelty…read more On Tuesday, I went to Blue Pearl Animal Hospital because I was worried that my dog's spaying wound might have opened. After filling out one page of information and a short "in case of emergency" declaration, they took my dog into the back, saying they were only going to check her vitals and that she would be out in a second. I felt uncomfortable not being with my dog, but I trusted the doctors. After about five minutes, an employee came up and asked us to sit in a room, saying that a doctor would talk to us after the exam. The exam? I was told they were only checking her vitals. I walked back to the front desk and asked again if they were only checking her vitals and made sure they would not perform any unnecessary treatment. The front desk employee told me it was only vitals and nothing else. A moment later, I heard a dog screaming at the top of its lungs. I was the only person there with a dog, it was my dog. I immediately told them that I wanted to see my dog, but I was repeatedly told that I was not allowed to. I asked why checking vitals would take more than 15 minutes and told them that I did not want anyone touching her scar or putting her through unnecessary pain. The front desk employee said she would check in the back to make sure my dog was okay and inform the doctor of what I had said. She came back and told me that it was another dog screaming and that they were only checking my dog's vitals. After another five minutes, I became impatient and asked again what was taking so long just to check vitals. The employee walked to the back again and then returned, saying they only had one more vital sign to check and that my dog would come out soon. By this point, it had been over 20 minutes. I told them that checking vitals should not take this long and that I did not want them to treat my dog without my permission. Another front desk employee then said that they were only checking the vitals, like looking at the ears and measuring the temperature, and asked me to go back into the room so the doctor could do the exam with me. I went back into the room, and a few minutes later the doctor walked in with my dog. My dog was covered in a bandage and had 10 staples in her. I was completely shocked. My heart dropped, and I could barely speak. The doctor told us that the incision had been slightly open, so she stapled my dog. She then handed us a $400 bill and sent us to the front desk. At the front desk, I told them that this was not okay and that I had been lied to the entire time. After some discussion, the front desk employee brought the doctor in charge to speak with me. The doctor told me that she had made all the decisions herself, which made the situation even worse, since it meant multiple employees had given me false information. I had been lied to the entire time and repeatedly given incorrect information. The worst part was that they did all of this without my consent, and it was not even an emergency. When I brought this up, the doctor said that it was not an emergency but that the dog was already on her table, so it was convenient. I was shocked by that statement. I told them they should not have even looked at the scar without me present and that I wanted to be there for my dog. The doctor then said that she was taking initiative because my dog was already lying there and did not even need numbing. So they are telling me that without my permission, while the staff was simultaneously telling me something completely different, they put staples into my dog without numbing her, without a consultation, and without asking me. When I looked at the bill, I also noticed unreasonable charges, such as $71 for a bandage. I told them how unprofessional this was and that it felt less like helping my dog and more like making a quick buck. The doctor then said in a snarky tone that she could take the bandage off if I wanted to. I left feeling sick to my stomach. My dog had been put through unnecessary pain, I could no longer trust the veterinarians, and I had the overwhelming feeling of being lied to by everyone involved. On top of that, I was handed a $400 bill that I never consented to, never received an estimate for, and never signed. I am extremely angry and heartbroken that I trusted them and unknowingly put my dog through all of this.

Bryan and McKee were with Dr. Beck basically from the early beginnings and have continued the services even after her passing. Dr. Ohlandt has recently joined them on their ventures, and occasionally there will be another vet to float through. Sena manages the front desk and all of the daily operations. She has also been with them for as long as I can remember. She is always so supportive and accommodating with scheduling and emergencies and somehow keeps everything straight. If your furry one is on a special diet, Kathy keeps up with the inventory and ordering so make sure she knows of any changes to your pet's requirements. When you enter this building, you can tell that it is truly a home-grown, part-of-the-family business. They maintain costs so that their pricing is still very reasonable. In fact, you should still write a check so that they don't have the overhead fees of credit cards if you can. Every little bit helps. Scheduling is still done by hand in a calendar, and they don't have computers or fancy software. They did get a paint refresh several years ago and a lobby make-over. This is not the place if you're looking to be impressed by the glitz and glamour found at some vet offices. The sparkle and shine comes from the service you and your loved ones will receive here. They aren't going to run a bunch of unnecessary expensive tests just to drive up revenues. They will however perform all tests and provide any treatments deemed appropriate. They still perform surgeries on site, can do x-rays, etc, but will refer you elsewhere if they feel you might receive more comprehensive care some place else. My family started going here when I was very young and I have stayed with them ever since. They have never disappointed me or let me down with the care they provided. In fact, they have gone way above what was expected. I always refer people here and have brought in other friends with their animals when they weren't getting proper care elsewhere. If you are looking for veterinarian services with a down-home flare, where you feel as though you are part of their family, and your fur babies will be treated as if they belong to them, don't look any further. Sea Islands is for you!
