I've always been very satisfied with Patrick Vet. For all of my cats throughout the last few years. I trusted them, they were always gentle and compassionate, but in the last year I haven't been impressed. First I noticed scheduling issues. I confirmed via their texting platform a certain date and time for one of my appointments, and somehow the time magically changed where I ended up being late when I showed up at the office. And they assured me I had the time incorrect. Thankfully I had the automated text saved, and they were wrong. The time was correct on my end. Not sure if anyone else has had trouble with this, but I'd go ahead and be sure to confirm with the front office for appointments as well as with the automated texts. Second is the true reason for my one star review. Just this past week I took my indoor/outdoor cat into Patrick (without an appointment, but she was a current patient) because she was showing mild signs of paralysis in her hind end. They graciously fit her in to be seen. I never spoke to a doctor when we arrived. The Vet tech spoke to me in the waiting room briefly and took her to the back. They said they'd be in touch later in the day. The vet called as promised. They told me all of her vitals were normal. They took an Xray and noticed that her stomach was abnormally full and told me she just maybe ate something that will eventually leave her system. They put her on fluids and offered to keep her overnight for my own peace of mind which I accepted (They never offered to do bloodwork which I think is slightly odd). A vet tech called the next morning and said she was showing signs of improvement and that I could take her home later in the afternoon. I picked her up as directed, and when I let her out of her carrier, she was 200% worse at least. She was swimming across the floor on her stomach and lost all ability to walk on all 4 limbs. She tried to eat but was unable and she also urinated on herself within 10 minutes of being home. I rapidly called Patrick back to discuss my concerns and the vet tech assured me she had improved over the day before and to just confine her to a small space and to call in 2 days to give them an update. After hanging up the phone it took me about 30 seconds to put her back in the crate and rush her to the Emergency Vet. She was triaged right away, upon arrival. In the end, My sweet angel passed away 2 days later from rapid neurological decline and heart failure. It was quick & tragic. Her body is in the process of getting an autopsy for further testing to hopefully rule out anything that could be contagious to my 2 other cats. Although most likely it was Bromethalin Poisoning. A neurotoxin found in some rat poisons. Also note that the Vet at Patrick said it wasn't Rat poison since Rat poison is an anticoagulant. Maybe he should do his research because Bromethalin (a somewhat new ingredient on the market being used in rat poison now) is in fact a Neurotoxin that is tasty and a rapid killer to cats. If I knew that this product existed, My cat would have become on indoor cat 100% a long time ago. I'm not saying that Patrick could have saved her life. But the dismissiveness and lack of concern was prevalent. They didn't seem to care about her well being and future. They never thought to do bloodwork to get more answers. They weren't proactive at all in my opinion. Their bed side manner was nonexistent. Maybe they favor Dogs over Cats? And I never spoke to a vet in person. The only people I spoke to was the vet tech that took her from me in the waiting room and the other vet tech that handed her off to me in the waiting room. We never once saw an exam room together. For Shots and routine things sure, Go to Patrick. For any type of sickness or any level of emergency, I'd suggest going else where. My other 2 cats are no longer patients of Patrick as of recent. I requested all of their records be emailed to me after I gave Patrick the call update they requested on my cat. Which was SUPER fun to tell them she died. :( I still have yet to receive said Records. Super disappointed. read more

I took my cat McCormick there because he wasn't eating or using the bathroom. They did some blood work and prescribed an oral medication for two weeks. After that, they told me to come back for more blood work. A week and a half later, McCormick was eating even less, losing weight, and still not using the bathroom. I told them I had to stop the medication because it was clearly making him worse. Their only solution was to keep him on the same medicine the one that caused all the side effects to get worse in the first place. I paid for another round of that medication but didn't give it to him. Instead, I took him to All Creatures, explained everything while crying my eyes out, and they immediately felt a large lump on his body during a basic physical exam. Something Patrick's completely missed. All Creatures confirmed with an x-ray that it was a tumor. They gave me special food to help him eat again and treated me with such care and compassion. The doctor there even shared her own personal experience of losing a pet, and it meant so much to feel seen in that moment. I'm devastated that my baby had cancer that went unnoticed for almost a month because Patrick's never did a full exam or offered an x-ray. I will never go back to Patrick's, and I'll warn anyone I can to do the same. All Creatures, on the other hand, I can't thank enough for helping me through the hardest time. read more

I can't believe how long it has been since I gave an update! I am here monthly to pick up some meds for the big guy. Refill requests are super easy, I always send an email, and the meds are ready the next day. Also, the big guy is coming with me every four weeks for his Librela injections. They were nice enough to give me extra meds last refill so I can now coincide med pick up with injection day which was really helpful. His visit for his injections is literally less than 5 minutes. It takes us longer to walk to and from the car than it does for him to get his shot! We are very thankful for the great staff here! read more

Our regular vet's prices kept increasing, and keeping up with just the well-care bills for our dogs was becoming challenging. This place seems to have gone downhill. Prices have gone up astronomically and Dr. Ramsey was rude, didn't have much to say, and didn't offer any advice on my overweight dog. Change of food? More exercise? Anything? Not to mention, why have I gone here with my pitbull for years with no issue and then suddenly they muzzle him during the visit? I used to love this vet practice, Dr. Patrick Senior and his son (Dr. Matthew Patrick) are always amazing. I got a different vet this time due to my pet needing to be seen ASAP. Front desk was very short and not really friendly when I came in this time. Maybe they had a bad day but I'm seeing other reviews saying very similar things about them being rude so.. I'm unsure. Dr. Tony Bolen was my vet this time and he didn't even acknowledge my dog. Thankfully, my dog didn't mind but for a dog that is unsure of people, that could've gone a different direction. My family and I have been coming here for years. As a walk-in clinic, it's so convenient to be able to pop in here anytime with the dogs. The staff is very professional and kind to animals. Although it can get pretty crowded sometimes in the waiting room, there are plenty of chairs (and even some doggy treats for your dogs while they wait). Finally I have found a veterinary practice where all the staff are helpful professional and cost effective. I love this veterinary office, with its contained parking right outside the door. Covid enhancements practiced. Park your car call the office & they will come get your pet. Simple as that. They have many veterinarians and assistants working who are more than happy to help. Of all the veterinary practices that I have went to with my bulldogs, this one is by far the best, both in medical knowledge and cost effective medicine. The no nonsense practice who are also open on Saturday mornings to take care of sick animals. I'm so lucky to have found this office and will hopefully be with them for a long time. He did not recommend radiation but gave some meds to give her comfort. It has been about a month since her biopsy, when we confirmed it is cancer. She is still eating, drinking and going about her normal life. She struggles a little with eating so she takes her time eating. Most veterinary only want your business and money but Patrick's Vet truly cares. They also take their time explaining to us. This family will continue to use Patrick's Vet. read more

Not the vet for us. Being new to Charleston, we have found many great resources and business providers for our needs, but not Patrick Veterinary Services. Our elderly dog needed a new vet and yearly vaccines. After research, we opted for Patrick Veterinary Services; however, the visit was highly disappointing. We found the office dirty, with exam room chairs that were cracked and worn, which made me question the attention to detail and care given to patients. Upon entry, my dog was weighed on a scale that appears to be used for all pets upon entry. Our prior vet disinfected the room and exam scale before the next pet appointment. I did not observe any disinfecting of the "community" scale, thus questioning whether sick dogs are weighed on the same scale. While the vet techs were attentive and pleasant, the vet himself spent minimal time getting to know our dog. He did a very brief exam - not even taking his temperature. Had he even spent a little time asking about our dog's history, I would have shared a bad back and neck. Instead, he grabbed our dog improperly to put him on the table, putting his back at risk. All around, it was a very uncomfortable visit. read more

We just adopted our pup a month ago, so if there is anything slightly off about her, we take her to the vet to make sure she is ok. In this case, she had been having stomach issues for a couple days and they did not seem to be improving. We took her here on a Saturday and although we were expecting to wait a while because they only take walk-ins, we were in to see the doctor within 25-30 mins. The staff was very friendly and efficient with making sure that each pup was taken care of. You walk in, put your name on the waitlist, and then you are called in. We explained our concerns and the doctor examined her and assured us that it was nothing serious (which was all we needed to hear as new pawrents). He was very enthusiastic and knowledgable and told us the best treatment plan. We left with some medicine and the exam fee was $40, which seems to be on the lower end for most vets around here. For the convenience factor and the friendly staff, we will definitely be returning! read more

I got a call from this clinic to remind me my dog needs some shots by the first week of June. I got told she needs 3 shots. I asked for a quote and I was told $144. Somehow they failed to tell me about other charges which it came out to $254 on top of the quote. I will never come back or recommend this clinic. read more

I switched to Patrick Veterinary Clinic over 15 years ago. Prior to that I had used several other Vet's that were pricey and much less caring. Reading some of these reviews makes me think an AI wrote them or someone was paid to negatively review the clinic. I have had 3 dogs that have gone here. The scale is not in the entrance. My dogs have never been weighted immediately at entry and no one has ever been rude to me. I have seen both Dr. Patrick's and two other vets over the years. The waiting room has always been clean ( and I am very picky) chairs are not broken. I recommend this Vet to all my clients who move here with pets. read more

DO NOT GO! Just brought my dog in to get routine work (nail trim and blood work to test for heart worms). Andrea came out and let us know they administered a vaccine, DHPP, without our consent. This messed up our dog, as she immediately peed on our back deck (our dog has NEVER done this). This presumably could have caused severe consequences later in her life, as she has already received this vaccine twice and over vaccination can cause inflammation and cancer.... we'll never be able to prove it. Andrea assumed we needed it, and went ahead with doing it without asking once... clear veterinary malpractice. We didn't even get an apology, just "we miscommunicated". I recently transferred veterinary care from a vet 40 minutes away (one way) to Patrick, which is only 15 minutes away. I loved my former vets but they grew themselves from a small, local facility to an enormous one (very fancy: sodas & water free for owners, incredible new furnishings, appropriate toys in each exam room, elegant wallpaper in the lobby) which is now the pet equivalent of high-priced concierge care for humans. I have 3 pets: a dog, a cat, & a 5 month-old kitten. Each of them has had care at Patrick, 2 more than once, & my change decision was affirmed every visit. I have seen 3 different vets over these visits, each equally wonderful. They were gentle, tender even, with each pet. Each was professional, very knowledgeable, & took the time to answer all my questions, including why treatments were required & how best to administer those treatments. Each of their techs were equally qualified & friendly. Front desk & check-out staff were the same. My requirements for my pets' vet are pretty simple: my pets must receive outstanding care; the cost of care must not gouge me financially (especially as my income is fixed & limited); & the office must be close enough that I can quickly get there when my pets need care. Check, check, & check. Cracked cushions on chairs concern me not at all. The facility is very clean. One last thought: Pet owners (just like human patients, actually) share a responsibility to receive not simply outstanding physical care of their pets, but the social interactions involved too. Whether I'm seeing my PCP for my care or going to the vet, I am friendly with staff from entering to leaving. I look at name tags & use their names in our interactions. I am generous with thank-yous. In short, I attempt to see the other as a person, not an employee. The adage that you get what you give is true in situations like these. Maybe more owners could try it. We had a geriatric exam for Alice, our 13 year old boxer/hound mix. She was seen by Dr. Matthew Patrick. Alice had skin issues and stiffness in her hips. Dr. Patrick prescribed and antibiotic and an anti-inflammatory and she had her annual shots and Simparica-Trio. Dr. Patrick told me that results would be immediate and he was right. My husband and I took our cats in for a routine check up this morning and the whole experience was excellent. They allowed both of us to go in with them and let us to bring both boys in together which was great because they get upset being separated from each other. The vet techs were all super sweet. What a wonderful experience bringing in my cat to see Dr. Deason. She was incredibly thorough and very knowledgeable and kind. I was also very thankful that I was allowed to accompany my cat during the appointment, as many vets right now are doing drop-off only, then you just get a phone call after the examination. My Freddie adopted me when he was 7. Went to a few vets looking for the genuine Dr who was into it for the love of animals and not money driven. Friends recommended Dr. Patrick in the downtown area. Here is one of the most loving and patient staff I ever met. This year Freddie turned 15 and it was a sad time but we decided he would go to the Rainbow Bridge and wait for me, pain free. The Staff were very compassionate which helped on so many levels for me personally as my heart was breaking. Dr. Patrick sent a card where they had made a donation in memory of Freddie to the American Veterinary Association which touched my heart. Went to get a quote for cleaning my dogs teeth. First thing this vet said when he walked in the room (did not introduce himself, say hello nothing), you know dogs don't need any teeth to eat ! Wait what I was stunned, I said I'm here for a quote for teeth cleaning. His response, you know she has a heart palpitations. It went down hill from there, I asked for more info he was very flip and matter affect and rude. I waited a week and figured maybe he was having a bad day. Called and asked Ashley for more info on the procedure,she was helpful and answered my questions until she was hanging up the phone.
