    meatballs (2014)

In the weekly installment of 'me and my friend have a hard day at work and go out for dinner' (previous have included numerous visits to Dogs & Dough, Dimitris, and Topkapi Palace) we headed to All Bar One. Not wanting a huge meal due to a) money and b) not being that hungry, we opted for some tapas/sharing plates from the start of the menu. It wasn't difficult to choose; cutting out the fish from the menu meant we were left with lots of meat and veggie options to go through. Luckily, we have very similar taste, so this wasn't difficult! We had meatballs, halloumi, hummus and bread, chicken satay, and some cured salami-esque meat. There was so much bread! The halloumi and tomato skewers came with some, and the hummus obviously came with a whole pile, even the cured meat had some! This was perfect for dipping not only in the hummus, but also the sauce from the meatballs. The meatballs were probably my favourite dish, if a bit dense, followed by the hummus - but how hard is it to get hummus right? A good meal, but I don't think it's good enough for the price tag.

I like All Bar One. I agree with James that it is mainly business types that you get in there but that's because it's a nice bar, centrally located around Spring Gardens with loads of offices surrounding it. It's not pretentious, you don't have to try to hard, it's perfect for an after work drink. This place is buzzing on Friday when the city workers have finished for the weekend, it's quite a good place to be in because it has really good atmosphere of people letting their hair down. There's a really good range of beer and wine and they do sell food too although I've never been there specifically for that, we ordered some of the "bundles" that they sell, kind of like tapas, small plates of chorizo, quesadilla, meatballs etc. What I had was nice but All Bar One is surrounded by tons of places well known for amazing food so it's never a place that comes to mind.

All Bar One is one of the classy bars, one of those bars you can find a nice crowd in. A pretty nice bar in the city centre of Manchester on King Street, Its Pretty cool with the design and its a bar where you want to go once you've finished work or a nice chilled out drink on a saturday afternoon. Theres loads of places to sit and little quiet corners to chill out, its very well laid out and the whole place has a great atmosphere. The food menu looks good but never eat here. My only bad point though is that the service is very slow and can take ages to order a drink! But its a cool bar and i like it!

Could be any Bar One. Inoffensive though.

I do actually visit here relatively often as it's equidistant between a few friends offices but I'm not a fan. I can't give it less than a two because it does what it wants to, well. It's just not my cup of tea at all. Expensive lager and generic chain design. It's ok but I'd much rather go round the corner to a ChopHouse.

the picutres on the website perfectly sum up the joyless pointlessness of it all.

Should really be called 'All Bar One Yah' as from the amount of suits and slicked back hairdos in there at lunch time, that's probably how it gets referred to most! Really nondescript dinner time refuelling station/after work watering hole for city professionals who haven't yet worked their way up to going the Bar & Grill! Don't bother.

Enjoyed Tuesday night social group meet here, and on their 2 courses for £10 deal. Nice feel to the place too, as early in the week around 7pm, and not too busy, or too quiet either - just the way I like it ! The deal has quite an eclectic menu (shall we say), and we all opted for main and desserts - all going for the same, the Classic Homemade Beef Burger. Beautifully presented (as you can see) on a bit of slate, and very tasty it was too. The desserts too were pretty good, and I chose the Chocolate, Orange and Mascarpone Mousse cake (maybe cream, or ice cream on the side would have made it even better ?). The service was excellent too. The deal is available Sunday to Thursday, so it is well worth giving it a go. The standard menu has plenty of choice for other occasions.

Was pretty excited on the night too, so excited I left my card in the wine machine which made me look like a total amateur. It's much more spacious inside than I had realised, and there are also seats and heaters outside with a great view of the nearby row of traditional pubs with the town hall in the background. I enjoyed trying the various wines (the smallest amount is often £2-3 so you can try a good four wines on a £10 card pre-payment) and could even tell that some of them tasted different, so am basically going to be earning my MW in no time. They also do a few little snacks - my fave baba ghanoush and some rather tasty crisps, although the brown olives tasted too sour for me. Tap water came chilled in a delightful glass bottle. Btw I am not sure there are actually other drinks options here, maybe check that before you go. The staff were efficient and welcoming and I am sure I will be back here. A great companion to hanging ditch and Bakerie in terms of our city's wine bar scene.

Although I now work for an independent wine merchant in Didsbury and am considered a bit of a fussy geek by my friends, I have longed for a good wine bar in Manchester pretty much since I arrived in town over 6 years ago, well before wine was a big thing for me. A few places have attempted it, half-heartedly for some, but none had so far succeeded. Then came Salut wines, first baby business of a lovely couple who like me love good wine and thought it deserved proper representation in the City Centre. An ambitious project that was, not without hurdles. But tenacity paid off and behold, a superb, clean, warm and welcoming wine bar where odd ins once was. Enomatic machines a-go-go, 32 wines are available by the glass at any point in (opening) time. That's 16 whites and rosés and 16 reds. Thanks to these machines you can enjoy a vast variety of wines, all of which are way above your house plonk from most pubs/bars/restaurant. And that's not all. 3 measures are available: 50ml, 125ml and 175 ml. The first one is my favourite. I can play to my heart's content and try a lot of wine before it's time to call it a day. Most wines are between £1.20 and £5 for a glass but you can also try some of the fancier stuff that would NEVER be available by the glass otherwise. Risk-free. Whilst they do not cater, a range of nibbles and tapas plates are available and it's perfectly suitable for a light lunch or diner. Cheese, cured meats and Mediterranean veggie plates, all made with very good ingredients. Music is top notch, not your average lounge "elevator" type nor your bass-boosted frenzy. Blues, jazz, pop, electro... To sum-up, great atmosphere, best wine selection in town, excellent service. The bottle prices to take away are on the steep side of I'm honest but I'll put that down as the location.

I do like wine, and it always has to be red, preferably a fruity one, but that's as far as it goes for me.. Names of wines? Nope. Flavours of wines? Nada. He recommended the Le Selezioni Cutaja, Nero d'Avola (confused face) and he looked like he knew his stuff, so with total faith in him that's what I went for. It was lovely. The bar itself is small but looks cosy. It wasn't particularly busy for a Tuesday evening but there was still a very pleasant atmosphere as I met some other Yelpers for pre-dinner drinks. As time goes on I can imagine this is the type of place I would like to sit for a few hours, order a meat and cheese board and try some different wines. This may have to involve building up my tolerance a little though, as usually 2 large glasses of red and I'm sloshed.

A group of esteemed Mancunians gathered in the Bier Haus, which is a delightful addition to one of Spinningfields latest hotspots, The Long Bar (owned by, you guessed it, Living Ventures). After a quick introduction to the charming prince, we were taken through a tale of the dizzying history of his family and their ties to the production of Kaltenberg, which is now brewed under licence and distributed by the award-winning Lancashire brewer, Thwaites. As Prince Luitpold explained, the company much prefers to set up local production of their fine ales to ensure the quality and freshness of the brews. Operations are expanding to Ukraine and Asia next year. We progressed through a wide variety of brews, each one getting a little bit darker and a little bit stronger. Before each tasting, the Prince imparted his considerable knowledge of the brewing process and flavour profile of the lagers and beers, including their impressive ABV%. In true Bavarian style, guests feasted on magnificent frankfurters the size of cricket bats in a bun (exaggeration but you get the point). After the tasting, the charming Prince fielded relevant questions about the brand, as well as the odd reference to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (don't ask). There wasn't a great selection on tap, certainly no names that I recognised, and the barman didn't seem too enthused about what was on, but I got to try a new Czech lager that I was quite pleased with. And there was a good selection of bottled goodies behind the bar as well. The room is rather small, but the atmosphere of the place is just great: exciting yet understated, the kind of place I could imagine both hipsters and die hard football fans could rub shoulders and neither would snigger at the other. During our brief visit we were serenaded by a mixture of Happy Mondays, Stone Roses (we are in Manchester after all) and some other classic delights. The Juke Box is an absolute joke, no doubt, as it claims, it's the best in Manchester. The place is in a cool wine cellar which gives in a unique feel and it has a lizard attached to the bar (great idea). There isn't a focus on wine despite being a wine bar and the clientele are indeed much better than your average Deansgate set. To me, it had the look and feel of a contemporary eatery in Spain. We were seated close to the specials board, so decided to order a couple of those dishes as well as what seemed like the majority of the standard menu (they recommend three per person and that proved to be spot on for us). Whereas pretty much all of the 18 small plates we ordered were absolutely delicious (we duplicated a couple of options) - the octopus salad, padron peppers, aubergine crisps, pork cheeks and ham croquettes were my highlights - some weren't that spectacular. The beef meatballs, Spanish omelette and lobster & prawn croquettes were a tad underwhelming unfortunately. The bottle of red we shared (Torre Solar at £18) was very nice indeed. You can order many of their varied wine selection by the glass. They'd be a solid five stars but for a small number of things - a lack of balsamic vinegar served with the bread, mainly disappointing desserts (I enjoyed my upside down cheesecake made with actual cheese, but others thought it was dreadful). Also the churros weren't doughy-delicious but brittle. Service was warm and friendly throughout but on a couple of occasions the server could have been a bit more sharp-eyed, especially when we were sat clearly waiting to pay. So, feast on the small plates and bypass the desserts here.
