Now, I rationally know that I can go on Amazon to find many of the games in this store... but you can hold them here. And look at them here. I think that makes all the difference. Not to mention that you can ask the opinion of the people working there on different games and they might be able to introduce you to something new that you might not have looked at before. (That kind of happened when I went in, I was looking for something specific and when they didn't have it I was shown around the wonder-room of other options and... well, let's just say that I spent much more than I thought that I was going to.) I've heard that there is a fun upstairs where kids can come and play games and hang out. I'm, unfortunately, too old for that and I don't live in Maine anymore... but--I think that is an amazing idea. I'm telling you, this store might be where my dream job lay.

It is clear that the goal of the store isn't to make money but to have the customer be happy and try to get a special souvenir at a great price. They could be making so much more money off of sport cards and they know that but they keep it reasonable to keep you happy. Also, the two people who work their are great, kind people who I have had great conversations with every time I go to the store over the summer. This place is what makes Bar Harbor such a special place to me.

Huge and beautiful decorated game room with playing tables for Warhammer, Battletech, Magic, D&D, etc. They have a bank of Gashapon machines that entertain my 9 year old daughter for 10 minutes so I can shop in peace while she figures out which one she wants to put tokens into. Been in probably 100 times over the years for tournaments or to browse through their massive selection and despite what the negative reviews say I have never seen the owner or staff be rude to anyone. Literally never. I have however on many occasions seen gamers stand at the register and want to chat with them for 20 minutes about their life story and I've seen the staff have to cut them off to help the next person in line, which is not rude at all it's completely reasonable. PRO TIP: If you go into a business don't expect the staff to always be able to chat with you for 10 minutes about your favorite hobby as they have product to order, shelves to stock, online orders to process, and other customers to attend to. It is a business after all and they are working. Based on my experiences here I tend to think many of these negative reviews are from super nerds who don't have enough social awareness to understand that they can't consume 20 minutes of a staff members time with chit chat or that perhaps their trade in item isn't as rare and valuable as they think it is. Ignore the bad reviews, go in for yourself and I think your experience will be very similar to mine.

What's even crazier, is that during said events, you're never pressured to buy anything. How do they make a profit? I'm not sure either. But it seems like their business model is more along the lines of providing a space that makes people feel happy and welcome and then worrying about that finance stuff later. Seriously though, the place is super welcoming and patient with nerds of all types. Whether you're dipping your toes into nerd culture or want to dive in face first, they've had an answer and anecdote for nearly every geeky genre that has ever pique a nerd's interest.
