The Sacramento Fine Arts Center was extremely busy today, as you can tell by the number of cars in their parking lot. People were meeting with the director going over the available space and others were in the galleries. They have a nice gallery with filled with local artists artwork. They are all juried so you only get to see the best of the best of local artists. Today's painting with paper class was taught by Carol Hawkins. She teaches a monthly classes and plans them out a year in advance so you can get the dates from her. They are monthly on a Friday from 1-4pm. And $75 for the class. She takes Cash or Check. It includes all of this supplies. It's the only way I take classes these days. Buying your own supplies is over rated. You end up with extra supplies you will never use and a total waste of money. That's why I keep coming back for her classes. 1-4pm is the perfect time, you miss most of the traffic and it's during the day light. The only issue is trying to get time off from work, which is tricky. I do treasure my time taking art classes and I find this painting with paper class very enjoyable. I always come home with a wonderful piece of finished artwork. Not all classes are like this. Some classes they don't give you enough time to finish your projects so you end up with a pile of unfinished projects in the back of your closet. This isn't an easy class. You have to have a vision and work fast. There is some time to chit chat, but you also need to be very focused. It takes just the right artist to take this class. Carol also teaches an acrylic class on Saturdays twice a month 1-3pm. It's $35 All supplies included except for the canvas. She asks that you bring a 12x12 or a 11x14 canvas. I got a great deal on a pack of them at Hobby Lobby on sale. I need to take another acrylic class as I have several canvases pre purchased for the class. I don't need to get time off from work to go to the class, but I hate to spend the time away from my family on the weekend. I need to work on balance. I really love taking art classes and it's not always easy finding a good class that work into my schedule. I've taken so many art classes over the years that I've run out of wall space so now I have a gallery in my garage. Our garage is painted a light lavender color as that was the paint that they had on sale at Lowes. It's a great backdrop to my gallery. I hang up my painting with push pins to keep them secure. It works well for the light stretched canvases. The Sacramento FIne Arts Center also has a full community kitchen. I had lunch in it today. I brought my Tupperware full of delicious leftovers and used their microwave. They also have community coffeemakers so you can make several pots at a time for a gallery event. You are welcome to use their kitchen, just leave it how you found it or even cleaner. I hope to see you at the Sacramento Fine Arts center for the next painting with paper class or maybe we can surprise each other and show up at the acrylic class.

In my search it was tough finding classes that are offered after work or weekends and this class fit my schedule. Very diverse group of students and awesome teacher. The process for the package was affordable and the supplies needed were under $20.

Beautiful & Quaint Art Studio In The Heart Of Midtown Sacramento!…read more SITREP Props to art docent Mike for giving my buddy Aaron T. and myself a tour around this lovely gallery. https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/red-door-art-studio-sacramento?select=h_NJpiWENh9n7efduhO-jw&userid=3mNz5nQFTIBQm0oU5mBR0w THE SETUP The Red Door Art Studio ("Red Door") is this sweet quaint gallery in a Victorian at the corner of 20th & L Streets that hosts a lot of beautiful work it exhibits for local artists. FRANKIE VANITY Have seen Frankies art page on Facebook, Aaron and I made a beeline to check out her work which was vibrant and energetic. I am myself quite partial to themes of faeries, mermaids, the fantastic and any multi-medium work that especially features the works of Shakespeare. https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/red-door-art-studio-sacramento?select=qmYrMOe0PcQwcwotixCaBA&userid=3mNz5nQFTIBQm0oU5mBR0w Frankie has a number of pieces that explores the work of Shakespeare and that is inspired by the sage's considerable body of plays. In addition, Frankie even incorporated the very pages of Shakespearean plays in her artistic work itself. https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/red-door-art-studio-sacramento?select=JOECpJi98oLP88kCymxFtg&userid=3mNz5nQFTIBQm0oU5mBR0w EXHIBITION CLOSES Just to give art fans a heads-up, Frankie's exhibition closes this Friday. THE LOWDOWN A beautiful, fun and spirited gallery in the heart of Midtown.

I ended up making about 5 pieces throughout the four classes. We glazed during our fourth and final class, meaning we had to return to find our pieces. When I came back the fifth week, my pieces were still not fired in the kiln yet. So I decided to come back in two weeks. That's where I ran into my issue. All of our completed pieces are in a separate room where the glazing happens. There was another instructor, bald lady who I believe instructs the hand throwing class, who was teaching her class how to glaze. My friend and I were looking for our pieces, trying to be as quiet as possible. However, noise is going to be made as we're rummaging through a bunch of finished pieces. There are about four separate sections where our pieces could be, so as we were going through the finished pottery pieces, someone from her class asked my friend and I to be quiet, which we were already trying to be as quiet as possible. She said that we were being rude and disruptive. However, this is just the nature of this room. People are going to be going in and out, trying to find their pieces, as they only place the finalized pieces here. This is when I expected the bald instructor to speak up but she was super rude as well. She was demeaning and condescending towards us. She talked down to us as if my friend and I were 5 years old. When we were looking through the non fired pieces, she raised her voice telling us not to touch the pieces if they weren't ours. The issue is, when you paint the glaze, not only does your piece look completely different, but the glaze is all different types of crazy colors. The only way to verify if the piece is yours is if you find your name on the bottom of the piece. So not only were we not able to verify if those pieces were ours, as the instructor was giving us attitude, we weren't able to find all of our pieces. We went back to our instructor, who was kind enough to find our pieces for us. Overall, we had a good experience but that last instructor really rubbed me the wrong way. I'm conflicted on what score to give, and really feel as though how are you an instructor when you are so rude? For sure left a bad taste in my mouth.

The inside has such a cool relaxed music studio vibe, I think I spent most of the time walking around and checking everything out from the different rooms to all of the awesome artwork on the walls. I even love their giant wall where all the kids sign and doodle on it! When we arrived, one of the owners welcomed us and gave us a tour. I love that they have glass doors so you can see other students practicing everything from drums, to bass, to singing! As much as you'd think all of the noise could be a bit much, I actually found it relaxing and liked hearing all the different instruments. My daughter's singing coach (Cale) was very patient and kind and she left even more excited to join than when we arrived. When we left, the receptionist gave us a flyer with the pricing and class options for my daughter's age - I thought it was a bit steep at first, but it includes 8 classes a month - 2 a week - 1 one on one session for 30 minutes and 1 group lesson for an hour and a half. Everyone there was so nice and you can tell the coaches/teachers love their job and what they can offer to these kids! The coaches offer everything from bass, guitar, drum, singing, and even keyboard/piano. They also offer summer camps, workshops and they even have the kids put on concerts! We will definitely be joining soon and I can't wait to see where School of Rock takes my daughter's confidence! Check them out!
