This was supposed to be a super nice and elite restaurant with a Michelin star. It is price fixed at €168 per person which includes 10 small courses. The service in the atmosphere was excellent, unfortunately the food fell far short. There was only one item out of the 10 that they served that was average, it was an anchovy on some white asparagus. Everything else was below average and just didn't taste good. And for two people the price tag was 500 including one wine pairing. Super disappointed considering it is one of the top rated restaurants in Barcelona. On the positive side, some people probably love their food. It just wasn't me. Open from Monday through Friday at Ronda Sant Antoni 41, the relocation over one year ago apparently still a secret to the manufacturer of Audi's GPS (and several late arriving guests who were overheard telling the receptionist that they'd gone to the former location first,) Alkimia by Jordi Vila is one of those polarizing Michelin Stars that has many supporters but an equal number of people who claim the restaurant in "terrible," a visit on Tuesday afternoon validating both opinions In one way or another. Set-up as a sort of clandestine space, the buzzer near a small sign at the door allowing guests with reservations to be rang in before climbing stairs lined in wrought iron, it is upon reaching the top that a large wall of fluid-filled vessels looms with the foyer to the right, a reservationist speaking slow and monotone before leading parties to the dining area where things thankfully lighten up. Clearly an expensive restaurant, the Chef's agreement to design a menu for longtime Brewery Moritz in 2011 still an ongoing partnership that assuredly helped Vila build-out the space next door with a modern open kitchen, digital screens and elegant softening touches beneath the original painted ceiling, it was at a table only feet away from the line that a seat was offered, the menu divided into two tastings and an a la carte section with the shorter Jordi Vila menu described as "more traditional" across-the-board more appealing on this particular afternoon. Named after the Spanish word for Alchemy, though in reality not nearly as Modernist or 'molecular' as such a title would suggest as Chef Vila instead looks to rejuvenate tradition by way of technique-driven cooking featuring high quality products, it was with Wine declined and Water poured that the menu quickly got underway without an amuse, the Roasted Red Pepper Flat Bread smoky and sweet in front of a glass filled with bitter Granita and topped with a leaf of Lettuce filled with herbal crumbs and a sort of Cannelloni filled with Anchovy Paste. Continuing strong with Seafood, a plate of Tartare absolutely pristine with tender chunks of sweet flesh playing well off tangy Yogurt, it was next that a Red Prawn with Caviar was served, the flavor immediately 'off' with an intensely bitter liquid gushing forth as the Head was squeezed and something, that if intentional, seems severely misguided as it immediately made one wish the next course would come and additionally threatened to spoil the rest of the meal. Still reeling from the Prawn, a description of what had been experienced brushed away as "yes, it is intense" by the server who thankfully brought course three no more than two minutes later, suffice it to say that "Tuna with Sherry Tomato and Acidulated Lemon Juice" was definitely better than the Prawn but still not particularly well-made as the Fish got lost amongst competing ingredients, the Rockfish Rice pleasant and texturally intriguing despite the fact that the protein was slightly overcooked amidst tender Grains and a net of aged Manchego. Said to be a master of Catalonian cuisine, a focus on 'modern, fresh and light' methods used to coax the best out of his ingredients, it was finally with a meaty Filet of Turbot that Vila and his team served a dish that was truly remarkable as the Oyster Cream and Squash Blossom stuffed with earthy flavors each contributed something different yet complimentary, the Sourdough used to wipe up some sauce a nice touch while the "French Fries and Iberico" follow-up was a throwaway course that seemed far too gimmicky. Again showing some skill with flavor pairings by way of the Chicken and Pumpkin Ravioli, a very "Thanksgiving" sort of dish that found balance between freshly grated Ginger and a thick dollop of what tasted like Cottage Cheese, savories were rounded out by Medium-Rare slices of Beef set next to a Sweetbread cooked rubbery, the Almond Milk Palate Cleanser with Peaches pleasant enough as was the €14 a la carte add-on Lemon Soufflé served slightly browned with a sidecar of Fruit Salad and Orange Ice Cream that was added to the center of the red-hot baking dish immediately. Told that Chef Vila also creates his own pastries, an impressive fact considering the fact that the combined menus contain a dozen daily, it was prior to a double Espresso that Dark Chocolate Cake with a texture like Pudding was enjoyed alongside Pickled Plum Ice Cream, the flavors complimentary and without a doubt the meal's highlight besides the Turbot though the Mignardise of Caramelized White Chocolate and Vanilla Bean was also well executed with a clean break and smooth cream featuring restrained but lingering sweetness. read more

Probably the least exciting and worst Michelin star restaurant I have ever been to. Ambiance - Loud and very bright. Alkimia itself only has 6 tables and it is connected with another open space that is their tapas restaurant which can get quite rowdy and loud. The restaurant itself and furniture is worn and not in a good and rustic way either. The whole place looks cheap and does not exude fine dining at all. The tasting menu is less than exciting. Granted Disfrutar is a hard meal to follow just two days after, but most dishes here are really neither flavorful nor innovative. When the flavor does not match up to the presentation, one can only say that it is just gimmicky. Two dishes I especially have to complain about: The shrimp head with caviar on top - I was told to suck on the shrimp head. Being Asian, I have had my fair share of shrimp heads in my life so this isn't my first rodeo. I knew not to "suck" on the shrimp head because of the hot burning liquid that is going to shoot into my mouth so I instead gently bit into it. As expected, the juice that came out SCALDED my tongue and the roof of my mouth. I had blisters on the roof of my mouth for the next 2-3 days! Also, a grilled shrimp head with some caviar on top is really nothing exciting to eat. There was also a bone in another fish filet dish. This place was really trying to kill my mouth. The uni dish - I have been to Japan multiple times and frequent Michelin star Japanese places. Wherever this uni came from should not have been served at a restaurant with this supposed caliber. I have had better buffet uni than this. It was not fresh at all and tasted absolutely foul. I had to really gulp some wine in order to wash out the terrible aftertaste. It's been a little over a week since my meal and I really can't remember too much else about the meal. Very forgettable experience with some blatant misses. No wonder it was so easy to get a reservation compared to the other Michelin star places in Barcelona. read more

This was our first Michelin starred meal in Barcelona and what a great start! Service, food, and ambiance were all spot on. The "Traditional" five course menu was more appealing to our taste buds than the "Alkimia" 10 course so we went with that. It was more than enough food as we left stuffed to the brim! Amuse bouches were tomato gazpacho with salami, baby squid. Entrees: fig and sardines with lemon sorbet; chicken cannelloni in a bechamel sauce; saffron risotto with langoustine; sea bass with greens; lamb with mushrooms and pumpkin Desserts: nougat with raspberries and kumquats (too tart for my tastes); and chocolate cake with roasted apples, eucalyptus ice cream. Reserved restaurant tonight for two after reading the introductions on Lonely Planet guidebook. I was barely getting over the shock of the set menu Alkimia Menu's price (everyone at the table has to order the same set menu). There is a cheaper, more affordable set menu and you could order the dishes separately as well. However, considering that this might very well be the last time I will ever be in Barcelona again, I convinced my wife into ordering the Alkimia Menu together by promising that I'll save more money from now on (thereby condemning myself to instant ramen meals for next few months I think). Alkimia menu supposed is about 10 courses with two appetizers several dishes and two desserts. The dishes are all very small portions reminiscent of french quisine style tasting menu. The dishes range from raw fishes, seafood soup, grilled pork cheek, to the famous ibérico pork. The dishes in general are extremely exquisite and delicately plated. We were in awe and enjoyed the look, the smell, and the taste of each dishes. Despite the menu's description, they gave us no less than fifteen items, including a serving each on the house of a very large and fresh prawn that was literally just carried into the restaurant as we sat down. Would I do it again? Probably not in the near future. But the memory of one of the most exquisite (and expensive) restaurant will be with me for the rest of my life. Oh as for service. While some other yelpers complained about the service, I didn't find any fault in it. They are a bit busy at times but always pleasant and responsive. Alkimia - Chef Jordi Vilà - Barcelona Our best Spanish chef, Jordi Vilà, is offering these days a rendition of the traditional "calçots" following the seasonal calendar. Calçots are usually eaten in informal settings, often outdoors, with your fingers (Catalan XIX century finger food!) and with bibs to avoid major damage to our clothes and our dignities when swept into the enjoyment of such delicacy. I'm telling you all this to explain the refrain I had to exercise in the Michelin-starred, most beautiful restaurant of the world (2017) to keep using knife and fork and remain politely seated at the table. Calçots are a Catalan variety of spring onion, particularly sweet and tender, original from the inlands of the province of Tarragona, that appear in all local markets and restaurants at the end of winter. Jordi accompanies his calçots with the traditional romesco, a sauce that, after it leaves his skillful hands, you can subtly deconstruct the ingredients, perfectly blended in a unity, each one awakening a different taste bud in a game of hide and seek. We enjoy calçots charred among ambers, preferably in a bon fire, in the open air, and covered to continue cooking off the heat, then pealed and eaten accompanied with yet another local sauce, romesco, also originated in the same geographic area. Romesco gathers ancestral traditions and procedures which involve, each one of them, its own labor of love. The sauce, is based on a popular cooking technique, the "escalivada" which consists of charring whole vegetables like tomatoes, onions, bell peppers or eggplant, as our Middle-Eastern relatives would do to make baba ghanoush. For this purpose in particular, whole small tomatoes and a head of garlic will go through the procedure. Another singular ingredient in this sauce is the "nyora" pepper, a small red pepper that grows in the Mediterranean area, with a thin but powerful flesh usually used for Spanish paprika after dried under the sun. In this case the pulp of the sundried pepper is scrapped from the skin and, trust me, taste and consistency are so intense, that a little amount goes a long way! And no romesco would be good enough without yet other indispensible local elements, roasted almonds and roasted hazelnuts. Charred tomatoes, a touch of roasted garlic, the pulp of nyora peppers, a few almonds and a few hazelnuts, an excellent cold-pressed, extra virgin olive oil, salt and pepper and an ever so little amount of vinegar, will give you a wonderful romesco. The first night in Barcelona we tried to get into Alkimia with no success. One of the few fine dining places open on Mon night it was packed. Not to be defeated we came back the next day for lunch to find the whole place to ourselves. The place has the stark white interior of an ultra modern design, a contrast to the industrial looking neighborhood it's in. We were seated at a table of our choice by Pedro the head waiter. Shortly after a guy showed up who found did the same thing. So we invited to sit with us. Turns out he was from Sweden and visiting friends in Barcelona. We got to talking about food and from the places I'd mentioned and what he knew, it was clear he was as serious about the food as we were. Alkimia has three menus. A modern current tasting, the Jordi Villa "classics" and an a la carte to choose from. We decided on the current, bolstered by one fish from the "classics" as follows: menu Alkimia -Appetizers -Spaghetini with seafood -Simple, white asparagus -Pickled oysters with glazed pork cheek and spinach sauté -Peas with ink sauce and ginger -Prawn "a la mano" F-ish of the day with onion and black olive -From the "classic menu" Rice with nyoras, saffron and fresh langoustine -Special chickpeas with " a la llauna " codfish -Mourels stuffed with meat ball -Beef with springtime vegetables and mustard seeds -Cream of pumpkin with orange -Baked apple with black chocolate and eucalyptus ice cream What an amazing meal. Chef Villa is definitely pushing the boundaries of modern Catalan cooking. After we finished up the French sommelier gave us a tour of the kitchen. After we got back our Swedish friend found out he didn't have his wallet. We weren't sure if this was honestly true or whether this was a trick but deep down I wanted to believe the former. However we were in a hurry, settled our portion and had to make our way to the airport en route to Athens. He seemed to know his food but you never know if you're getting scammed so we reserved from paying for him and went about our way. To this day I wonder what happened there. Anyways, the service from Pedro is awesome as was the sommelier who I wish I had remembered her name. Turns out Jordi Villa loves Italian food also, and runs a pizza joint and an invite only underground Italian dinner by appointment. So if you love his food, definitely inquire about it. Went here 9/2011 for a trip of the northern part of Spain. Alkimia has been well talked about amongst the chowhound community and we're so glad we made it here. Atmosphere: 1-michelin star, fine dining. Modern and mostly subdued. Go for the pre-fixe dinner, well worth the price. Service: this is where they lost 0.5 stars. the service was hurried. the staff didn't spend too much time on explaining the food perhaps due to a language barrier. so at first glance you would assume the food is just not as good due to its lackluster service, but WRONG. the food was just the opposite. Food: Very modern, flavors all spot on. We ate at many fine dining establishments on this trip and I felt this place was one of the few that didn't have a few dishes that were overally salted. All the classic catalan ingredients (all very fine) and done in a modern, clean way. Favorites: Squid in it's own ink/ginger - very rich but oh so wonderful. Oyster/beef cheek - similar texture but obviously different tasting profiles. Tomatoes/sea beans/fish - quite acidic, but all went well perfectly together. Overall, very different than the cuisine we would encounter in the states. Spanish fine dining concentrates so much on the freshness of the ingredient and are experts at preparing seafood. Can't say enough how lovely this dining experience was for us (minus so-so service). In the Cinc Sentis vs Alkimia debate - they are both sublety different so I would say must try both, but if I only had room for one, I would pick Alkimia. read more

We had dinner here last year. I know the place is closed now, but honestly I am not surprised. When we went, it was fairly empty. Joe and I decided to have ourselves a fancy dinner while vacationing in Barcelona. We read some reviews and decided to choose Alkimia. The service was great. They were attentive and didn't mind that we were dressed like bums - we forgot to bring fancy clothes. With that being said, it wasn't worth the money nor did we enjoy our meals. The dinner itself was really one note - sour. From beginning to end everything had a sour note that we couldn't even differentiate the first course from last course. For the price and from the reputation I would have expected much better... First off, our experience with the restaurant started with a decidedly sour note. I had made reservations to 3 different Michelin star restaurants for our last trip to Barcelona and I did not have any problems with either of the other two. I had made a reservation via email and confirmed credit card details to secure the reservation over the phone. I was assured that our reservation was confirmed. They should have mentioned that they would email you the day of and if you didn't respond your reservation would be cancelled... I assume this restaurant has clientele from all across the globe. Being I was on vacation out of the country I did not receive the email, they claimed they called me but I have no record (I was definitely outside of my service area being from the U.S.). I do not understand what the point is of giving your credit card # to secure a reservation if you also have to verbally or via email confirm again prior to the reservation... the whole point of giving a credit card number is to re-assure you will make the reservation otherwise you will be charged a cancellation fee. So, after waiting in the entryway for probably 10 min we were told our reservation was cancelled because we did not re-confirm (in a very scolding sort of way), but they did say we could sit in this other open section of tables in the back (in a very un-apologetic way like they were doing us a solid). We decided to stay because we had already taken a taxi across town to get there. After our first course we were told that they had another "cancellation" and that we could move tables to the regular reserved area. Super annoying, but we did move. After some time we were told by the same person who had originally told us our reservation was cancelled, I assumed her to be the manager, that we were really lucky because it was the best table like she was doing us a favor and we should be thanking her... not really great customer service for a restaurant where our dinner for two was over 400 euro. The food was good (beautifully presented), not great, nor exceptionally creative from a flavor prospective. I do admit we would have enjoyed our meal a lot more if we didn't have to go through the whole reservation fiasco so that could have tainted our opinion admittedly. Nonetheless, the rest of the wait staff was really nice and professional and I really enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant. Also, it was nice being able to see the chefs at work in the kitchen from our table (during the half of the meal we were seating in the main section of the restaurant). All in all we definitely won't be making a return trip to this restaurant, we much preferred the food and the service at the other two restaurants we had booked for the trip. read more

If I could rate this lower I would. Don't believe the hype - though this restaurant is Michelin starred, it served me and my family one of the worst meals of my life. The only reason I finished the food is because it was so goddamn expensive and the waitress was cute (and that wasn't even worth it, she was engaged). I ordered the tasting set I think. I honestly don't remember because I'm trying my best to forget. It started with roasted bell pepper, which was the worst dish of the night. The taste of bell pepper was so strong that it cut through the flavor of all the succeeding dishes. For the rest of the night, all I could taste was pepper, even when I was barfing out the rest of the food. The next meal was a shrimp cocktail, seasoned with garum. Like in the first dish, the flavor of garum completely overpowered the shrimp, as well as my palette. It reminded me of when I went to Pebble Beach in Carmel and inhaled the scent of dying seals and their feces. They also served me lamb, which I will admit was edible. Because it tasted like nothing. It was like drinking water - I mean I guess I like water, but I could have gone to the Starbucks across the street and bought sparkling water for 1/50th of the price (and starbucks water is expensive man). The only good thing Alkimia served was pear granita with panacotta. It was good, but I could very easily make it at home. I know I sound like an overly harsh food snob. But I eat trash like McDonalds and Wendy's and I like it. Food can be good no matter the price, but this was just not enjoyable in the least. All the food tasted bad and the bill cost $500 (family of 5). If you're looking for a good meal, please save your money and avoid this restaurant. Eat at your local burger shop or make your own food because I assure you it will be better and cheaper than whatever you will get here. read more

Gotta say, I was expecting a bit more from Alkimia. Walking in, you feel as though you're entering an art gallery - beautiful, but you're almost afraid to talk at a normal volume! Maybe it was because we got a bit soaked on our walk over, but I just didn't get a sense of warmth and friendliness that we experienced almost everywhere else in the city. Particularly troubling was our actual waiter, who actually got disgruntled at one point when we asked him to walk us through the menu del dia. Unperturbed at the time because we had just landed and were excited to be in Barcelona, now looking back it was really frustrating to get that response from a Michelin-rated restaurant! Despite the service setbacks, we had a really great meal. We started off with a pair of amuse-bouche's, one of which was almost like a basil-olive oil crostini, except reconstituted into a shot glass! Very tasty. We also split a "spaghettini" made of zucchini ribbons instead of pasta - I need to get an attachment to my mandolin to make these at home! I must admit my fiancee's entree outshone my own selection - the nora rice was so tasty and the langoustines were as good as a Maine lobster. The first of many, many delicious langoustines that we tried in Barcelona. My John Dory fish was quite good, but the filet was quite large and I ended up overeating I think! It also came with an onion puree that was a bit salty for my taste - overall the dish needed some acidity and a slightly smaller portion of fish. With a bit better service, I think Alkimia would've been a truly unforgettable start to our trip to Barcelona. With so many great restaurants in the city, I'd probably not point a friend here right off the bat, but if you end up at Alkimia your tastebuds will thank you! read more

I was by no means blown away, but I have to admit the €39 lunch was an amazing deal. Water and a glass of white wine were also included with the following: 1. Macadamia nut cracker: one of the most interesting crackers I've had - it was a parmesan cracker with wonderfully nutty chunks and pieces of macadamia nuts 2. Liquid pan con tomate: a shot glass with olive oil on top - I didn't really want to drink all that olive oil, but the tomato water underneath was good. 3. Sausage: one peppery slice per person 4. Fruit and nut bread: with hazelnuts, apricots, fig; it was almost like a fruit cake 5. Chicken terrine salad: chicken, foie gras and blood sausage. This was quite rich, but one part of it that was like smoked ham was good 6. Codfish brandade: my favorite savory dish of the meal. It's pureed potatoes with salt cod, very rich, but cut nicely by the pickled cauliflower, 2 types of green beans, and horseradish. The other option was sweetbread 7. Pescado: from Paraguay. It was a generous piece, and it came with nice stewed white peaches. Without the peaches, the fish was a little bland and boring. I ended up crusting it in my leftover macadamia nut cracker, which was a great idea (except I'm sure they would be angry if they saw me..) 8. Dessert: this was awesome. It was an alcoholic pineapple dish that was very refreshing for a warm day. It had pineapple granita, pieces of pineapple, pineapple ice cream, liqueur, and a brownie underneath. I could have done without the cream, and the lime gelee at the bottom was an interesting surprise (like key lime pie flavor). 9. Espresso: strong 10. Yogurt foam and raspberry sherbet: the raspberry sherbet tasted kind of like the ones I had as a kid, and the yogurt foam was interesting (much better than whipped cream!) 11. Peach and vanilla pate de fruit: I don't usually eat these, but the vanilla was a nice touch I appreciated the service and really enjoyed all the extras at lunch, but it's not really something i would consider to be a standout in Barcelona. read more

I really wanted check out a restaurant in Spain that has a Michelin star so I look at all of the restaurant in Barcelona and decided on this one because they has a great lunch special for $38 euro for 5 courses. The place was very stylish and sleek and the waiter actually speak some English so that was a plus for me. We sat down and order the 2 pre-fix courses and decided to choose different dishes so we can try more. At first they brought it out a grizzini bread which was nice. Next they asked us if we wanted any bread. I didn't eat any but my gf took one. The amuse was tomato water w/olive oil and something crunchy which was really refreshing. Next came out another appetizer of salted cod and roasted pepper which was a little salted for me and I love salt. Next came out one of our main courses. I got the octopus and artichoke which was good but they grill it alittle too much because certain part taste burnt but over all it was a decent dish. My gf has the anchovies and it came w.bread, basil and that was a decent dish too. Next came out our main courses of Meat burrito and a frizee salad for me and my gf has the John Dory which came out almost perfect cook because it was still wiggling when we move the dish. The kitchen sent us out another course because they know that I work in the kitchen. The dish was shrimp with cannelini bean and celegy. First they brought us the soup w/out the broth in it and pour it table side and half way thru your soup, they come with homemade cream w/greens in it and it totally change the taste of the soup. That was truly a GREAT IDEA! I totally forgot about another course that we had, it was beef for me which was cook rare which i love and it came w/carrot and carrot puree and pickle carrot. At this stage I was stuff already but it is so rude for me not to finish it but i couldn't. So we asked to take home the beef. Another dish we has was shrimp, baby wild asparagus and brown butter and some type of puree which was very good. They also sent us out 2 amuse dessert before we actually got our dessert. I couldn't even finish it and when the dessert came out. It was ice cream and chocolate w/kumqurt. This whole time we finsih 1 1/2 bottle of cave and I had another 2 reserve beer that they had and it was the best beer i had in Spain. After we were done, they took us in back of the kitchen to meet the sous chef and the kitchen crew. They were nice enought for me to take a picture w/the sous chef. If you are looking for a true culinary experience. this is it. The presentation and use of regional ingredients was excellent. The combination of ingredients and presentation was visionary and nothing that I have experienced before. We chose the larger fixed price menu because it just seemed to have more fish and exciting items. If you are not hungry than go for the smaller menu ( 2 to choose from). One of the deserts was a homemade ice cream ?goat milk and a cold green tomato broth which looked amazing and tasted great---go figure? I hate mackerel but I ate the mackerel that was somehow prepared getting rid of the strong taste of mackerel making it very mild and not over cooked. All the sauces were mild and complemented the flavors of the main ingredients of the food. If you enjoy a high level culinary experience you will enjoy the restaurant. Make reservations before you go or show up and see if they have room. I do not write a lot of reviews but when I find a true example of quality in a touristy town I am all for supporting it.
