It was quiet empty when we spent our time here, so it made for a calm, relaxing experience. Shared a french fry with the baby and the hubs shared a chicken finger meal with my other (big) baby :) Super cute and relaxing interior. After hanging out inside here for a bit my kid said she wanted to move to Carp, so we can come to this cafe everyday! Seating outside or inside. Pay when you order and then they bring you your food! Friendly and welcoming service. I was intimidated before stopping in being with two kids, but this cafe is 100% kid friendly! Terrific spot for lunch today! Friendly service and excellent food. Nice views from the large windows (non-busy street out front, marsh/park out back). The smoked turkey and Gouda sandwich was excellent. It had cranberry mayo and spicy Dijon, which added extra flavor interest. I also had a slice of coconut cream pie, which was my first bite of it in years. I need to make this soon at home! How could I have forgotten how much I love this dessert?! I am a regular at Alice's, visiting every Wednesday morning with my walking group for a nummy latte and a freshly baked cheese scone. The cafe is lively, and often busy, and a local favourite in the west end of rural Ottawa. I had the pleasure of booking a special lunch for friends and family in May, and we were all really pleased with the delicious food - Harvest salad, carrot/walnut soup, a selection of sandwiches, and carrot cake. This is a lovely spot and the food was very good, but since they have cornered the market in their area, I did find it a little pricey. That said, the drink was yummy and we enjoyed our little treat. I do also love the patio space that sits right on the main road, as well as the side garden. One other note is that since they don't have a lot of competition, they are usually very busy: people cycling will stop for lunch, adventurers for Ottawa will make it their destination for a break, so you will likely wait for a table. read more

I had dinner here recently with my husband and father-in-law. Overall, the food was good. Alice's Village Café is owned by the same people as the Cheshire Cat Pub. I used to think the Cheshire Cat was in the boonies, but Alice's is even deeper into Carp! I guess the longer I'm living here in Ottawa, the less I'm afraid to venture into the suburbs for food, lol. My father-in-law started with the soup of the day ($5) which was a Hungarian sausage soup. It was huge and he only ate about a third of it. He liked it but thought it was too spicy for his tastes. My husband and I didn't get starters. I got the BBQ Beef and Mushroom Sandwich ($13) which comes with chips, but I wanted to be healthy (or more accurately, as a responsible adult I felt it would be better for me to have some vegetables with my meal instead of delicious salty fatty carbs), so I upgraded to a side salad for an extra $1. The hubster got the Chicken Flatbread ($13) and my father-in-law got the Cain Burger ($17), which was one of the weekly specials. I actually wanted to get their Coconut Shrimp Tacos, which was another one of their weekly specials, but they weren't offering it that day :( The men shared a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon ($30). I'm always designated driver when we take my father-in-law out, so I just had water (side salad and water, I know, my life is boring, ha). My beef sandwich was good. It was piled high with real roast beef (not deli meat, thank goodness). It's just that some of the slices were hard and gristly. However, after I picked those out, the sandwich was delicious. It had mushrooms and cheese in it too. There was a little too much mayo for my tastes, but I tend to like my sandwiches on the dry side. I had asked for my salad dressing on the side, but unfortunately my salad came already dressed :( It wasn't super saturated, so I didn't send it back. It had more dressing than I would put on myself, but it was still ok. The dressing does have cilantro in it, so be warned if you are a cilantro hater. I'm not a huge fan, but I can tolerate it. There was mint in the dressing too. The salad was a real mixed greens salad, with carrots, red peppers, radishes, red onions, cucumbers and grape tomatoes. Ingredients were fresh. I had a bite of my husband's flatbread, and I thought it was ok, but nothing to write home about. It had chicken, bacon, caramelized onions, roasted red peppers, BBQ sauce and cheese. His flatbread came with the tiniest salad I've ever seen. Literally a mouthful, lol. I think it was more a garnish for aesthetic purposes, but it had all the ingredients that my salad had, just on a much smaller scale. My father-in-law liked his burger, but thought the beef patty was a little dry. He did tell them to hold the goat cheese though, which I think would have added some moisture to it (the other ingredients in the Cain Burger were bacon, banana peppers, and caramelized onions). His burger came with fries and I had a few and they were good. They were crispy and had the skins on. They had a display full of desserts but I was stuffed, so didn't have any, but I was really eyeing the Raspberry Nanaimo Bar. During lunchtime you order at the cash register, pay and they give you a number to put on your table. When your food is ready they bring it to your table. During dinner, you can either do the same as at lunch, or they offer table service like a regular full service restaurant. We opted for the latter. Service was friendly and efficient. Decor is cool. I loved the exposed Edison lightbulbs light structure. There's also a piano in the dining area. There's angled parking in front of the cafe, and a parking lot on the side of the cafe. Parking is free. Alice's Village Café is a cute place for a casual meal. read more

Love this cute cafe, their nasty Cinnabon is amazing! We even bought the frozen ones once and thawed at home... coffee top notch, other baked goodies are ok.. but love how cozy the seating inside and the nice outdoor patio.. service is a hit and miss I feel. I want to love this place so much because the food and coffee are great and the cafe itself is beautiful. However, the service here has been lacklustre every time we've visited. Maybe it's the rush of it all, because they do get quite busy, but I've never felt very welcomed by the people who work the front counter...they always give off an air of annoyance and seem like they are struggling. I've returned a few times now hoping that I just caught people on a bad day but every time it doesn't seem like customer service has been their priority. For those of you who were hesitating about whether to go back to Alice's, let me help seal your decision. Don't! It's not worth it. The service is so terrible that it may take you over an hour and 45 minutes to get your food, you'll be lucky if you get a glass of water, and the food is mediocre, at best. Sadly, it has deteriorated so much that's no longer a worthwhile destination. And, if you're a cyclist, you're treated even worse than other guests. Such a shame to see this change. Still a 4-star retreat! What a better occasion to visit them than on their 1st anniversary?! Met a friend there, and we chatted over café (for me) and Earl Grey Tea (for her). While getting all caught up on our lives, we had lunch: I had a delicious salad with strawberries and a variety of greens, onions, raspberry vinegrette, and feta cheese; my friend had the quiche which came with lightly fried potatoes. The food was a delicious complement to the visit! I will definitely be back. Further update on the Cheshire Cat Pub: they burned down in January, and are in the midst of rebuilding. Charming. Simple. What a wonderful find in Carp. I'm spending a lot of time out that way these days and looking for places to pass an hour here and there. Alice's is now on my list for both lunch and coffee. Great sandwiches on fresh bread, bakery treats and delicious coffee were what I experienced. Oh - I forgot wonderfully helpful and cheerful staff and wonderful building they are in. We tried the southwest chicken sandwich as well as the beef sandwich. Both were fantastic. Also had the pulled pork poutine. (Yes, we were very full when we left - too full for any bakery treats, which was a very sad moment for me.) They also have various soups and quiches on a daily menu. Did manage to get a latte and it was wonderful too! Really, nothing noted that would pull this down from a 5. I hate giving fives. I find any reason to not give a 5. Can't find one here. Alice's is a five. Would I return: Yes, loved it. Would I recommend: Yes, if you can drop by and check it out, do. I keep coming back to the word 'charming' as the one that sums Alice's up. We had a free day and decided to drive to some of the small towns outside of Ottawa. Landed in Carp and shared a couple things here. We ordered a dark chocolate hot chocolate and quiche. The hot chocolate literally tasted like warmed milk with a bit of chocolate powder mixed in. I wasn't able to see the color of the drink because of the 3 inches of whipped cream on top, but we took it back up and asked them if they could add a bit more chocolate or ...anything? They obliged, but what they brought back was like 10% better. Maybe Canadian hot chocolate is just super weak? We felt bad so didn't ask them to re-do again. As the server was bringing the quiche, a portion of it fell so instead of offering a new quiche, she offered a sample of soup. Soup was fine, quiche was alright. I came here on a day off for dinner and really enjoyed my time; the atmosphere is really relaxing and the wait staff are very friendly! What I tried: - One of the weekly inspirations, the Spartan burger (greek style); there were 2 other weekly inspirations (See my pictures) - Although the toppings were good, I found the thick patty a bit too dry, so I would order something else next time. - Classic poutine (I added carmelized onions on top): I really enjoyed their thick fries which were perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The gravy was rich, and there were ample curds. My favourite dish of the night! - Café au lait: this had some beautiful latte art on top, and tasted great. - Pumpkin spice cupcake: the frosting was a cream cheese one, and the batter was lightly spiced; perfect way to end a meal! I sat in the back area (sunroom) and it was lovely and very private. I absolutely loved the décor here, and would come back just to have a drink and quick bite to eat! :) read more

First time here after walking by yesterday, it was very busy. Monday today, 12:30pm Still pretty busy due to lunch crowd. At this place, you line up, order and pay, they give you a number to put at your table, once you walk around and find seating, they bring you the food. I ordered the salmon sandwich, which was pretty good, lots of cream cheese on it!, came with a side of chips. I also tried their salads, looks healthy and tastes healthy. And kids poutine. Not a happy visit this time to Alice's. Every time I go it's so pleasant and they always seemed to accomodate my vegan diet, but this time they would not make me anything. They always made me a modified breakfast wrap whether or not it was during breakfast hours. Ive had this done for me like 5 times. This time they looked completely confused for as to what I wanted and it was a little frustrating. Then they also forgot our coffee.. I hope you guys get more organized and consistent. It was always so pleasant coming here knowing youd get food. Like organize with the staff or something so that people know what to do when people come in with diet restrictions and they don't leave hungry. People have different diets now and it's a normal thing. Restaurants should keep up and be able to accommodate them. Now I'm hesitant to come here again because I have no idea if I can get anything to eat besides a salad. read more

After hitting the Diefenbunker for a visit on Canada Dat, we decided to stop in to Alice's which is just up the street from the Diefenbunker. STYLE/AMBIENCE I have to say that I really like the feel of the place. It has a nice character, there are lots of places to sit with front and rear (I think) patios, and it seems to be a popular spot as it was pretty busy. FOOD They seem to have quite a nice selection of items to choose from. I started with a decaf latte and maple syrup scone which I followed up with a Madhatter burger and a side of poutine. I didn't mind the scone but the latte was a bit of a disappointment in that it lacked any real flavour. Unfortunately, the Madhatter burger is not something I can recommend. It is a heavily flavoured burger and while this seemed good on the first bite, it quickly became just too much. The strong flavour also overpowers everything else on the burger so you can't even taste their 'special sauce'. The poutine was also unremarkable despite seeing many coming out that looked really good (though they may have been the pulled pork versions). While I was generally disappointed with what I ordered, my selection is only a fraction of their menu items. A friend chose a grilled cheese sandwich with apples and she quite enjoyed it. VALUE Prices are generally pretty good especially the bakery items which I though were fairly priced for what you received. SERVICE While you order at the counter, a server will bring you your order. People who worked there though seemed nice enough. PARKING There is loads of parking around the cafe, either on their own lot or on the street. -------- While I was disappointed with what I had, I'd definitely stop by again if I were in Carp. It would also be nice to bike out there for lunch and bike back. I look forward to trying their other menu items and just hope I have better luck next time. read more

The wife and I stopped in here for coffee and dessert after supper. It was our first time checking out the place and we'll definitely be back. The coffee was good and they have a huge section of pastries and other tasty baked treats. We thought things were reasonably priced. The girls working the counter we're all friendly and welcoming. The decor in this place is really nice, it be a nice place for dinner. We plan to check out this place again in the future to give their food a try. This afternoon I went to Alice's to have lunch. I ordered the Fall Harvest Wrap which featured butternut squash, pumpkin seeds and goat cheese and for an extra $1 I added their curry coconut sweet potato soup. My fiancé order the Mad Hatter burger and a Kitchessippi (local on tap brew). The layout of the front counter where customers place their orders is very tight, especially when it's busy and today it was a bustling little place. I felt like I was in the way of both other customers and staff going in and out of their narrow opening to get behind the cash and this was while it was my turn to place my order. The only available table on the patio wasn't clean. It had left over crumbs from the last patron and dried bird poop. We wanted to be outside so we thought the server would at least wipe down the table before serving our food, but that did not happen. Also, there was no cutlery. Once we finally did receive our food after two groups of people were served ahead of us (even though they ordered after us), I was given a different soup than I had ordered. They switched my soup order without notifying me that they had run out and did not offer any alternatives, so luckily I have no allergies. As I returned the soup inside, I noticed the customer who was seated after us had received my soup. I wasn't offered any other food in exchange (let alone a refund of the extra money I had paid to have soup) so I asked if I could have the kettle chips they regularly put with their wraps. It wasn't until both my fiancé and I had finished our meal before the bag of chips was set at our table. I absolutely love this little cafe. It is on rural grounds but the charm and location almost make it feel like it's home. You walk in and greeted almost immediately and everything on the menu is freshly made. Perfect for catching up with my bumblebff's. The cheesecakes are to die for in this establishment. The cachet of the building is the key factor in the appeal of this establishment. We came for breakfast and although it was perfectly adequate, albeit quite pricey, it was not memorable. I love cinnamon buns so I ordered Alice's big nasty. I loved the cinnamon flavor and the warmth of the bun. The only disappointing thing was they used too much sugar, but after peddling 42 k to get here, I knew I could burn it off. The fruit salad was good with a lot of different fruits that was not too sweet so a nice compliment to the bun. My wife's Roasted sweet potato salad was excellent with lots of pecans and sweet potato. My daughter's Spinach salad was disappointing but in fairness the Roasted Sweet Potato salad was far superior. They should probably charge less for this average salad. The restaurant should consider a new type of ordering system. They have you line up at the cash to order and pay for the meal. We waited 20 minutes. Once you order and pay, they give you a number for your table so they can serve you. They should consider a computerised ordering system where you can order at your table then go to the cash to pay for the order. This would eliminate long lineups that block the entrance. read more
