In the NE, we don't have good weather often, so Summer is the *best* time to take advantage of the lil free NYC perks like these. Anyway: I stumbled upon this place during my recent exploratory strolls through the East Village. What a cute gem. Ample seating for such a small space, mild greenery (we're not talking a jungle and that's OK). Some lil trinkets and garden art throughout. Totally serene, I don't see any justification for negative reviews. IF I lived down here I would *definitely* be in a place like this every. single. morning. PS: They have great deals for membership if you have a green-thumb and want to literally cultivate this atmosphere. Local gem and creative events…read more Visited with some family going to see some of the local history. Staff were super welcoming and I was blown away by the photos of the Inwood/Washington Heights before the subway was introduced uptown. The vast swath of farm land and this farmhouse is one place to see how it looks in that bucolic time period. The backyard had a hessian hut of what the military groups used during the historical time period. It is fascinating to think about so much history that took place across the last four centuries in Manhattan and previous to the European arrivals. Thank you for having a local spot for people to learn about history. Great value.

Opened in 1902 and stretching over 500' in the NW corner of the garden, it houses some of NYBG's most exotic and rare plants, including the unique Corpse Flower, which blooms every few years. Sections of the building are separated into different biomes from around the world, including humid rain forests and arid high deserts. You can make a complete circuit of the building starting in the main dome and through the multi-level rainforest canopy biome. Around the back, there is an underground tunnel that brings you up into the desert biome, where you will see some very odd shaped cacti and strange prickly plants. Look, but do not touch! The Conservatory is also the venue to host special events during the year, like the Annual Orchid Show in the Spring and the Holiday Train Show in the Winter. Tickets to the train show sell out fast so look for them on sale as early as September. The highlight of the train show is that electric model trains are set up to run around scale models of New York landmarks, such as Grand Central Station & Macy's that are all made from organic plant material. The kids love it at this time of year and you cannot miss this experience if you're in New York!

Yes the space is small, but it seems every bit of it is utilized - look up into a nearby corner and see a collection of iconic to-go coffee cups, look at a narrow strip of wall next to a door and notice a collection of dried wishbones. Even the bathroom is a display room. There is also a cool backyard space with a bar and a projection screen on a wall that is used for events. Perhaps what makes this place so great (if you are old enough) is coming across an item that may have been so commonplace in your life in the past then to have that feeling of rediscovery while you declare to your companion "OH SHIT, DO YOU REMEMBER THIS?!" along with a flood of memories of a different life. The people that complain about the donation for admission (a bargain) do so selfishly thinking only of the value that it brings to themselves, and not seeing the overall picture of the important time, energy and work the Reliquary utilizes to preserve the relatively recent history of NYC and performing its civic duty of fostering a sense of community in the city we love.

Still, the peep show machine and the amazing bodega decor on the store outside and lobby is worth seeing. $5 for NYC locals and students, a little more for tourists; not bad!
