Nickelby's is a throwback to a different era: the era when bars were bars and drinking was your #1…read morehobby. Located in an L-shaped plaza behind the CVS on W. Market St, it would be easy to miss. It is billed as a neighborhood lounge and like many bars of this kind, is in a struggle to maintain their decades-long reputation while also keeping up with the times. It is dimly-lit, cozy and has old, comfortable bar stools that have backs. As a drinker, this (bar stools with back support) is very important for me. I will not dedicate myself to an afternoon of drinking in a place that will leave me with lower back pain. If you're hungry, you won't find any provisions heartier than a bag of chips or beef jerky. The bartenders are generally middle-aged woman who have probably worked in bars their entire lives. This is not a dig on these woman. They are fantastic characters who probably deserve to have a short story written about them. They are the type who can put up with the ramblings of old men who drink pounders of Busch all afternoon, break up an argument over whose team is better AND make you a strong cocktail while calling you "honey". The bar has a ton of history. My parents remember it back (at least 40 years ago) when it was the Bowery, a piano bar with peanut shells all over the floor. In an time when most bars have Twitter accounts, Nickelby's still does not have a website or Facebook page. They do have karaoke on the weekends and great drink specials seven days a week. If you're looking for something different than your favorite Highland Square haunt, check out Nickelby's. You make get a little good-natured ribbing about your tattoos or haircut from the regulars, but you will be rewarded with a quick, strong cocktail and a glimpse at where my parents used to party.

I plan on attending Open Mic night on Wednesday just to see how it is. So the jury is still out.

While the view from there isn't great (not their fault), it's a good place to have a quiet conversation or have a smoke. My only complaint is that they play the music a bit too loud to have a conversation, but I imagine, given the service, that they would turn it down if asked. I will definitely be back.

Although the drinks are…read moregood, and the atmosphere nice, the service is deplorable. *Both times upon entering we were immediately struck with the smell of bleach/chorine, the place smelled like a pool. Several weeks ago, we (3 couples) stopped in for drinks after dinner around 9PM. It was fairly crowded, and we had to stand for a bit until some seating opened up. Service was slow, but it is craft drinks, so a bit understandable. However, after about 10 minutes of sitting, my wife bussed our table (multiple glasses, receipts, trash). The bartender was snippy and rude. We ordered another round, then left. Saturday night we returned for drinks after dinner again (8:00PM), this time with 3 other couples (8 people). We arrived first, and while there weren't any seats, it didn't seem as crowded as the last time. However, I over heard one bartender say to the other bartender "I'm not putting up with this shit again", and then proceeded to lock the main door. As our full party had not arrived, we had no choice but to leave. I'm not certian, but I suspect locking the door may be against fire code. After dealing with rude bartenders, and being locked in because the bartenders don't want to deal with a crowd, we certianly won't be going back.

I haven't been there in years, and they have made a lot of improvements. The outside area, looking toward the lake, is great this time of year. There was a breeze, and I just love the new (to me?) bistro lights. I was a tiny bit sad to find the pinball machine AWOL, but then I promptly forgot after (downing too many Chilled Fireballs and) discovering the super fancy iTunes jukebox. That kept me AND the hubby entertained, which is no small feat. You see, he likes country (which makes little sense given he's foreign and has only lived in the north), and I like to get crunk. Anyway, we both found lots to like, and no one even seemed to notice how incompatible our tastes are. Long story short. This was a great night out for me and the hubs. We got a break from the kids, we didn't blow a ton of cash, and we were only a *little* buzzed when we woke up the next morning. (Next time I'm sticking to three drinks!)

The bartender was really cool and fast like the wind. Not sure what we talked about, but was definitely good folks. No food that I remember; if there was, we didn't order any. I think someone brought in a small pizza. So, you can do that. It's definitely a drive, but a solid comfortable one with a pretty good view of the lake, but it was dark out.
