Friendly dude, asked what's up and when I explained I didn't get a sense " you dumb moron" lol. I was expecting that because I imagine that's what he sees day in and out. Told me it would be a few days to do the tune up and change my shifters since he had a few days off. Only 3 days later he called explaining what he found. Wore out , again ancient Shimano shifters with hella sticky deteriorating rubber grips and hard as hell brake pads. Said it would be a day or two till ready and no worries. 30 mins later he called to say it was ready! Wham. I'm sure if I would of caught him on a good day it would of been a while you wait situation. I showed up on a Sat morning and he explained again what he did. Bike looked awesome, looked a little cleaned up and things were tight! A little more than I would like to spend but it was sooo messed up and now literally a new ass bike!! So rethinking it some it was a bargain considering the age of the bike for a second life. Total cost, new Shimano twister shifters, cables, brakes and general tune up was $130 not including tip. I rode that bike 11 miles in City Park the next morning with a big cheesy grin on my face. Felt better than new.

I was not impressed but I already know the cycling world... I moved to north of Metairie and looked for a bike store closer to me. It only took me a few years to run away from them due to an expensive and bad situation which the store manager not only did NOT managed well but happened to be very greedy. Then I went to Bicycle World. I was needing an upgrade for my 2001 Litespeed and also I was riding with a lot of neck and shoulder pain. Not only the guys were very helpful but knowledgeable and they detected immediately the problem. Since then no more shoulder pain. Many years later, I needed a saddle upgrade and again, this time Adam, was very accommodating and helpful. We all make mistakes as we are human and also it depends on the attitude we present to others. As for me I try not to be an @&@!? and negotiate issues. I've never had a problem with them and if I do, civil behavior helps to get things done.

My first experience with Gerken's Bike Shop was on 07/25/24, when I brought in a bike I had…read morepurchased online to be fully assembled. Unfortunately, this turned into a disappointing introduction. Upon picking up the bike, I was informed that the frame had sustained scratches -- which Gerken's claimed were due to poor packaging or damage during shipping. However, this was only mentioned after the bike had been fully assembled. No one contacted me beforehand to inform me or ask how I wanted to proceed. Instead, the bike was put together anyway and touched up with paint in an attempt to hide the damage. It felt less like a courtesy and more like a quiet cover-up. Despite this, I gave the shop the benefit of the doubt and returned a few times for routine maintenance. I had a rear brake removed and a set of carbon tubeless wheels installed -- and that was the only visit where everything went smoothly. I want to call out Casey by name for doing excellent work on my wheels. He's the one technician who showed true professionalism, and none of this review should reflect poorly on him. Unfortunately, my final visit on 04/17/25 confirmed that this wasn't the shop for me. I came in to have a crankset and new pedals installed. The job was completed the next day, and I went to pick it up. Diego, the technician who had done the work, was helping another customer and never acknowledged me. Another employee handed me the bike, and I left. Before loading it onto my rack, I inspected the frame -- and found a deep gouge in the top tube, down to the raw metal. I immediately went back inside. Only when I returned and was visibly upset did Diego finally speak to me. He admitted to dropping a tool on the frame -- but didn't say anything at the time and let me pay and nearly leave without mentioning it. To make matters worse, he justified his carelessness by saying he works on "crappy Walmart bikes" all day and handled mine with the same disregard -- even though this bike is a $2,500+ investment and something I take great pride in. This experience has cost me an additional $700 to replace the damaged frame and have the bike rebuilt. I won't be returning to Gerken's and I strongly advise anyone who cares about their bike -- no matter the value -- to take it elsewhere. The lack of accountability and pride in workmanship here is unacceptable.

TL;DR: Sold me the wrong size bike, dismissed my input, repeated mechanical issues never fixed,…read moretried to charge me for their mistakes, and treated me like a nuisance instead of a customer. I bought a $600 bike from this shop and told the owner at the time of purchase that I felt like I was leaning over dramatically towards the handlebars. Instead of helping me find the right size frame, he sold me the bike he had in stock and assured me it was fine. After a few months of riding, I developed constant neck, back, and wrist pain. The bike also had recurring mechanical problems. The tires rubbed against the frame or brakes, sometimes preventing the wheels from turning at all. Friends would help me adjust the seat or tires, but the fixes never lasted. When I brought it into Dashing, the owner dismissed my suggestions and insisted on making small incremental adjustments. This led to multiple trips back and wasted money on trips that never solved the issue. Including trips where I would call Dashing, ask the owner if I could bring my bike within the hour, arrive within the timeframe, and see a "Be back soon" sign on the door and wait indefinitely (usually another ~45 minutes) with fellow customers who'd appear until the owner returned annoyed. Estimates of when my bike would be ready were rarely honored. My bike was once in shop at the onset of beautiful weather (I missed a big social bike ride) for weeks longer than estimated. Getting in touch with someone on the phone despite leaving voicemails was impossible. I was later told by an employee that, "[They] don't really check voicemails." They also struggled with intra-staff communication between the three employees that I encountered. I would come in with an issue, tell it to the employee on duty who'd come up with what felt like a solution only to encounter at my next visit another uninformed employee who was not privvy to any of the reasons my bike was at the shop in the first place. The only helpful experience I had was with an employee named Rose, who actually listened, made on-the-spot adjustments, and checked with me before sending me home. Unfortunately, once I started riding again, the same wheel problem returned. Each time I brought it back, they would adjust spokes, but the issue kept happening. On my third visit, they even tried to charge me again for truing the tires, claiming my earlier adjustments to the stem plus my weight caused broken spokes. At that point, I told them to stop service and give me the bike back. What frustrated me most was not just the repeated mechanical issues but the dismissive, condescending way I was treated, especially by the owner and the other guy that works there. They never took responsibility for their poor service and acted like I was a nuisance or expecting free services instead of a loyal customer who had been shopping with them for years. On top of that, my bike would be returned to me with damage: the rubber that encases the break, split; the handlebar tape, loose; the cap on the handlebar, missing. There'd be no acknowledgement of the damage from Dashing. I would bring it to their attention only to be treated like it wasn't their problem. The current owner benefits from the community's assumption that the Dashing Bicycles on Sophie Wright Pl is owned by the same women that owned it under the same name, Dashing Bicycles, when it was on Broad St. Dashing Bicycles's current ownership (James, the face of it) does not uphold the same standard of care or accountability. I would not recommend buying a bike here.

The place is slammed with toys for every age and a great selection of bikes. The amount of baby books we found was amazing and ended up buying about 4 of them. One well-known bike shop on Frenchmen was extremely rude and pricey and repeatedly demanded and pressured I just buy a new bike from them and would not fix my vintage bike or order replacement parts (separate Yelp review coming) or really even help me unless I simply bought a whole new bike from them (I was actually the Frenchmen Street bike shop's customer for 20 years, and NEVER again will I step foot in that place -- they were that rude to me, and I've heard the same story from other bicyclists); the other shops were nice but a few said they couldn't do the repairs I needed, but could get generic parts, but prices were high. One other shop gave me a nice quote I liked and were very helpful. I was about to take my bike back to this other shop, but they were closed that day. (I might write a review for the other shop, too. Even though they didn't fix my bike, they were also very friendly and helpful.) (The famous bike shop on Frenchmen made my whole experience miserable. All the bad reviews about that well-known shop are true.) So, I searched one more time, and found Bokah, who was nearby on St. Claude -- and open. I read the reviews and looked at photos, and Bokah seemed great, plus Bokah was open until 6pm, and I could load my bike on the front of the St. Claude Bus. I had a vintage bike that needed repairs, and on their website and reviews I saw photos of and read about them specializing in vintage bikes. So, I took my vintage 1952 bike-hit-by-a-truck to Bokah. Man, did they do me right!!!! They were super friendly, super helpful, and super on-point. We started looking at replacement parts, and everything they quoted were real good prices, and they were willing to match or beat any other quotes or prices. But then they started working on the bike itself, and were actually able to fix everything with little to no extra parts. They kept my vintage bike original, and made it run like new. The main ingredient Bokah had that the other shops didn't? Care, and accurate assessment. What the other bike shops said they couldn't or wouldn't do... Bokah did! Bokah went the extra mile for me. I had never been there before, and they treated me like a normal person and a customer they wanted back (compared to one of the very rude shops I went to, or some that just didn't care much). The owner is in the shop, and oversees everything. The owner and his assistant worker are a breath of fresh air, being extremely helpful, and actually wanting to fix my vintage 1952 bike. They are stars in my book. They took my vintage bike that was run over, and repaired it in no time while I waited and watched! It went from un-rideable to the Cadillac nice smooth bike it used to be. And the price? Extremely fair and competitive -- I am super-happy. They didn't do anything I didn't need, and did EVERYTHING I DID NEED. I didn't need to order any parts, because they fixed it all in-shop by just using their brains, normal tools, and a little effort, and a handful of small replacement parts -- which most the other bike shops didn't want to do! Most of the other bike shops either refused to work on my bike, or were rude/had bad service, or pressured me and wanted to sell me a whole new bike, or were too pricey or just too far away. I am bringing two more bikes to Bokah to fix for me. If I had 1,000,000 broken bikes I would bring them all to Bokah to fix. I am beyond happy. Bokah did what no other bike shop could or would do. Bokah went the extra mile for me, and actually did a couple extra really nice and thoughtful things that fixed a few other bike issues I had -- just because they care that much. And they were super-nice, super-fast, super-understanding, and just kick-butt super all-around. BEST BIKE SHOP EVER. And you know what? It started raining HARD when they finished with my bike. And the shop was closed at 6pm... they let me stay 30 minutes extra until the rain stopped!!!! What excellent folks at Bokah. They're local, they're real people, they treat you like a real person, and they get the job done. Go to Bokah! Bokah is on St. Claude, just before Poland and the Industrial Canal Bridge. Really easy to get to, and you can even load your bike (if broken) onto one of the St. Claude buses! Please check Bokah out, and go there. If some other shop gives a bad attitude, or isn't helpful, or wants to overcharge -- go to Bokah. Bokah does sell great vintage bikes if you do need one (tons of beautiful vintage Schwinns when I was in there), and many other types of bikes that they restore themselves. They also have a service that for $20, they will come pick up your broken bike so they can repair it. (How can you get a bike to the shop if your bike is broken? Bokah will go get it!)
