A large facility, a rail-trail accessible seconds from the shop, a friendly, knowledgeable staff that go above and beyond to ensure you are safe and taken care of. What more could you ask for from a bike shop? Specialized is their in-house brand they carry. Matthew and Tim didn't hesitate letting me test ride as many bikes as I needed to make up my mind, despite me only have two months of experience knowing how to ride a bike. I just let them hold on to my ID, and I was on my way on the Lafitte Greenway. I tried four different bikes and wound up landing on the Specialized Roll Sport. Oh, how I wish this bike shop existed in NYC! Friendly, knowledgeable staff. Great selection of bikes & gear. Reasonable prices. I rented a bike for 48 hours. It was $60 and they took a deposit that was equal to the retail value of the bike ($430). It's a little hard to swallow, if you don't expect it, but it's a solid policy. My bike came with a helmet & lock, which was helpful. It was a gear-less bike, but NOLA is mostly flat, so not a problem. The basket was great for holding a water bottle & my bag. Returning was easy & I got my deposit back, on the spot. Also worth noting that this shop is right on the Lafitte Greenway, so super accessible. read more

Responsive, professional, accessible. I received a bike as a gift at the beginning of the pandemic which encouraged my husband and I to start riding together. His bike is a fancy racing bike with thin wheels and very light. Mine is a sturdy, mountain, all terrain (NOLA streets and sidewalks) kind of bike. His tire goes flat and he needs some other things that fancy bikes need so we stopped in on a chance that we could be seen and they would know what we needed. Turns out they had guests and were at their capacity at the time but they made sure what we needed was inside and when my husband could go in he got the inner tube and a few other goodies. We took our bike here to replace a flat tire and do some maintenance on the bike. We dropped if off the week before the storm. A week later we called because no one contacted us to let us know the bike was ready. I was rudely told by the manager that the storm put them back several days and that while the bike had been looked at he was waiting for the other manager to assess it and would get back to us the next day. Another week goes by and still no word. We go to the shop to get our bike back and they tried to give us someone else's bike. We explained that we know what our bike looks like and this is not it. After gong back and forth they finally believe us and go back and get our bike.They had fixed the flat but did not fix the other problems with he bike. So we are taking it to Massey's, which we should have gone to in the first place. As an avid rider they will never get out business again, but I am sure they do not care considering the way we were treated. read more

Customer service is non existent!!! They are absolutely positively rude and not deserving of your business. I had an issue with my bicycle and walked in to address. I didn't expect same day service I just wanted an opinion. I have purchased many bicycles from these people as well as spent lots of money on accessories and services. I was treated like a second class citizen and spoken to in a degrading and horrific manner. I will NEVER step foot into the place again! The addy says Toulouse, but it's right off North Jeff Davis by the Bayou St. John, just steps away from the post office. You might miss it if you aren't looking. I think there was another local bike shop here at one time (Mike's?), but I never went in. Product: Bicycles and bicycle accessories. I really only buy accessories here, and they usually have what I'm looking for. Prices are a little on the high end, but they have a large stock. (3 stars) Service: Top-notch---I have been here a few times, and only had to wait once. Friendly to a fault, not pushy on upsells, and they've done a minor repair or 2 for me at no cost. (5 stars) Facilities: A older metal construction building that, as noted, is easily missed if one isn't looking for it. They have a shared private parking lot off the corner of Toulouse and N Jeff Davis, though it is in disrepair and could use some leveling, topping, and painting. Signage is posted, but almost as unremarkable as the building itself, more a reminder to those who know what they are looking for as opposed to a new customer. In contrast, the inside is well-kept, spacious, and lain out well. (3 stars) Overall: Definitely put this one on your list of New Orleans bike shops for business. I'm really hoping to acquire a new bike before Mardi Gras, so I can avoid driving anywhere this Carnival season. Seriously, bikes are the only way to get around this time of year. Parking and traffic and parades and drunk tourists - you'll get everywhere faster and safely on a bike. It's much less stressful, too. Back to the issue at hand: reviewing Bayou Bicycle. It's a big space, located near the American Can and Post Office on Bayou St. John. Was at City Park today, and decided to walk over to see if they were open, and ideally ride home on my new bike. Sadly, my budget for a new bike is NOT $500, and therefore I couldn't find anything to buy today. They have nice stuff, as far as I can tell, but I'm not that hardcore and plus all my bikes have been stolen since I've lived here (all three of them), so I'm not interested in dropping half a G on one quite yet. It wasn't clear who was working and who was shopping, and I wasn't greeted or asked if I needed any help. Would've been nice, but I suppose it's not the end of the world. My front wheel was stolen while it was parked in the French quarter my fiance is a cyclist and he always uses Bayou Bicycles for his tools, repairs, and equipment. I was really glad they were open during Mardi gras! The guy at the front desk was a little rude when we tried to describe what we needed. We brought the bike in and the service guy grabbed all the replacement parts we needed really quickly. Labor was really reasonable but we were able to do it at home instead. The wheels and tires were good quality and I picked up a nice bike lock from there wide selection so that it doesn't happen again. We also looked at helmets which were pricey and there were few options so we didn't buy any. Will be back for any bike service needs! read more

Mixed opinion. Can't really one or 2 star it though. They have great products and services, cheaper than most anywhere in town. My recommendation, only visit them for major jobs like replacements or significant tune ups, not simple stuff like a slight adjustment or tire balance. They seem to take longer on simple stuff than maybe your local rip off bike store that can do an emergency job in an hour. Backstory: For my birthday this year I decided that I wanted a bike. A "real" bike, not the $40 Wal-Mart bike that I'd gotten 10 years before to ride the 1/4 mile to and from my college campus and my apartment. Some friends with "real" bikes had recently come to visit and we rode together and I ended up walking half of the way home because the seat of my cheap bike was beginning to cause extreme pain in my lady area. Looking for a new bike, this was probably my number 1 requirement: I want a bike seat that understands the importance of treating something so sacred with the respect she deserves. Of course, 99% of the bike sellers we encountered were men. The first place we went to (all of the stores were local NOLA places but I'm not naming names) had been recommended by a few friends. We went inside, I explained that I really knew nothing about bikes other than how to ride them and that I wanted a seat that wouldn't make me feel like I'd just ridden a bull at a rodeo. The guy seemed to lose interest in helping me once he found out I was a bike newbie. And he really didn't seem interested in my special request but I'm going to cut him some slack on that one...it was fairly obvious he would have been more interested in protecting my husband's precious cargo. He did the minimum, letting me try bikes and things, but I felt like we kept having to drag information out of him. Instead of suggesting bikes similar to the ones I'd ridden and said I liked, I had to specifically ask him if they had anything like what I'd just tried but in a different brand. Then he'd say yes like of course they did, who would ask such a silly question? Oh you want to try it? I finally just got fed up and we left. Onto Bayou Bicycle! The people there made us feel very welcome. I explained that I was a bike newbie and what kind of riding I thought I would be doing. They pointed me to some Hybrids and didn't hesitate to start taking them out of the racks and adjusting the seat. They gave me pointers on my posture, showed me the different gears, and came outside to watch me while I rode. I found a bike that I liked a lot...the seat seemed much more comfortable than similar bikes from other brands. That's when I told him of my concern. He immediately started telling me all kinds of information on this brand of bike, how they take ergonomics seriously and have engineers working with doctors to get things right in that area, and that they recognize that women need a different design than men, unlike other companies. I was stunned. I was overjoyed. I wanted to hug and kiss this Master of Bikes who seemed, finally, to understand this anatomical revelation. Deep down in my soul, I want to be an elite bike snob. In reality, I'm a fat girl who doesn't know enough about bikes to be a snob...but I do know that I lust after really elite bikes. After a tragic (and all too brief) love affair between my front tire and a stretch of abandoned trolley tracks on Erato St, I was the proud owner of an unrideable bike. Even with a trued wheel, my confidence was shot. My sweet old roadie and I were no more. So the fat, scardy bike lover started a hunt for a replacement ride to get me back on the road. I stalked bike websites, made lists, and visited shops to scope out my prospective investment. Each bike--no matter how wonderful on the internet--wasn't working for me in-person. I resigned myself to buying a bike that I just didn't love, until a friend encouraged me to visit one last shop. Since I raved and drooled over Globe bikes, my friend thought it prudent to actually SEE some Globe bikes. The Globe shop in town? Bayou Bikes. As this review may have indicated already, I'm a pain in the ass. I'm annoying and opinionated and full of pointed questions. Salespeople really don't love dealing with me because I need to know EVERYTHING. Oh, and I'm a total snob-face. (Does this make me a hipster?) Anyway. Bayou is a bit of a hike from my digs, and it's not like I can hop in my car to visit. So I called. The salesdude seriously spent 30 minutes on the phone with me, answering the first round of my questions. Wow. He encouraged me to come by and actually ride a few bikes, because riding is believing. (It's true. If you have a chance to ride bikes before you buy, please do.) It's worth noting here that he didn't brush me off on the phone with a flip "just come in and ride the bikes instead of asking me" tone. He actually answered my questions without trying to pull me into the shop. My field-trip out to Bayou Bikes was...unexpected. It's a huge, warehouse-style space that's dark and cool inside, with rows of beautiful bikes waiting for a commuter to take them for a run. On the left is an accessory wall that blows every other shop in this city out of the water. The depth and breadth of both bike-branded (Electra, for example) and independent merch (Knog, for one) is stunning. I was enchanted by all the possibilities. Oh, and in the right front corner? They have a basket closet. It's an alcove devoted exclusively to baskets. You want basket options? Bayou Bikes has basket options. In terms of stock, their bikes focus on Globe, Specialized, and Electra. There isn't a lot of overlap between those three brands, which opens up Bayou's stock a lot. They have roadies, cruisers, cargo bikes, high-end beaters, and a vague category I call "city bikes." Their target audience seems to be people who use their bikes for transportation, be it low-and-slow to bars or brisk rides to work. The other, really outstanding part of being at Bayou was the empathy and general Not Douchy behavior from the sales staff. When I explained that I'm going through an annoying phase where I'm both a snob and scared of riding, my salesdude didn't push me to try bikes I balked at. He suggested bikes that would be a great compromise for my needs. He had a general attitude of, "Everyone falls, and everyone shakes. It's okay to need some help getting back on the road." And he pointed out that most people who are in love with bikes own multiple bikes, without guilt. Truth. I now own two road-worthy bikes, and I don't need to apologize. Turns out that's allowed. Who knew? Bayou, like other bike shops, encourages customers to take a turn on their prospective bikes in the parking lot...or further. (On their website, they mention test rides on Bayou St. John. And they mean it!) I spun a few different bikes through the lot and up Toulouse St, getting a feel for the power and speed. The shaded faux porch in front of the shop makes adjustments pleasant, even in our sultry August heat. The general sales experience was so low-pressure, so pleasant. I could have walked away without purchasing anything, no hard feelings. I did buy that day because, yes, I did fall in love with a new bike. A quick cruise through the accessory wall meant a pile of little things to make the bike really mine (new grips, fenders, a bell, a flasher, mounted locks) as well as installation time. The bike was promised in a scant 24 hours later, with all of my bells and whistles attached. Picking up the next day was seamless, perfect, wonderful. The ladywife and I supped at Parkway Bakery (a block away) and had a leisurely bike parade back to our part of the city. I don't love that my chosen bike shop is a heck of a hike from where I live, but I do adore my shop enough to make the hike. Accessibility notes: Door opens in. Small curb in front of the shop. A bike shop that is low on snobbery & high on selection -- and generally bad at customer service. Bayou Bikes seems to specialize in hybrids, cruisers, and commuter bikes of every ilk. The store backs up to what will become the Lafitte Greenway, a multi-use trail from the Treme to Lakeview. They have a garage door in the back that will open the store right up to the trail. As soon as the Greenway opens, its going to make Bayou Bicycle one of the most accessible bike shops in the city. So good job Bayou Bike for investing in the bike future of New Orleans. I've gotten a tune-up, bought a rack and panniers, tubes, lubricants, and blinky lights, and even placed a special order. The only thing I haven't done here is to buy a new bike. The products and tune ups were quality, but the customer service has been mediocre. If you know what you're looking for, grab the product, and walk to the register, prepare to be ignored while several employees continue stocking shelves, sweeping the floor, or milling about. Eventually they'll ring you up, but it'll seem like they're doing you a favor. I've encountered several extremely helpful employees in my visits, but sadly they're in the minority. The crowning glory of customer disservice was the day I purchased $50 of bike stuff and went to use my debit/check card. I make it a point to request that all merchant runs my card as credit (sign the slip) instead of debit (type my pin) because my bank incentivizes using the card as credit by giving me 1% back on those purchases. This is because merchants pay the majority of the fees for credit transactions while banks pay the majority of the fees for debit transactions. Like usual, I handed the employee my card and said "credit please." That's when the man (who turned out to be the owner) went on a rant about the evils of credit transactions, how I was ruining his small business, and that he would not run my card as credit. I reluctantly typed my pin and left with my goods. Today, there's a sign at the register stating that they don't run debit/check cards as credit due to the difference in fees. And while it is the owner's right to refuse service (or refuse a type of payment), it is piss poor customer service. PS: why is it so damn dark in here? read more

Bayou Bicycles, never again. They lied, tried to push their stock on me, WAAAY overpriced especially with labor and their advertised prices are all wrong. If you're new to bikes, don't go there you'll get a shitty deal. 1- I found their official website and picked up a nice 2012 Specialized bike for $460. When I went there their actual price was $510 for the exact same bike. I talked to 3 different people, they all had a different explanation, most convincing answers were varying between, "Oh, we must have forgotten to update the price." and "Manufacturers keep changing the price we have to keep up." 2- At home I measured myself and it looks I need a large size of this particular bike. When I go there they didn't even measure me. When I asked how come, the guy said "Uh-oh we don't measure people, we just look at them and make a guess.". You need to be measured before you buy a bike. In most shops they spend up to an hour with you to measure you. 2A- He had "a look at me" with this other guy, he pulls him away they whisper and one of them comes back and pulls down a Medium size bike. I said "I measured myself and I think I need a large one." He said "no you are medium." I went out and rode the bike and it's too small. I went back to him, he still insisted I am medium. I also asked for a silver color he said, that color is "faulty" they get a lot of complaints so I should get a green one. I went home, called them anonymously, told them I want to check their inventory for some items. Guess what. They don't have large size on that model. They don't have Silver color in any size. Guy on the phone said "oh yeah we are overstocked on medium greens". I went to GNO Bikes uptown and bought a Cannondale for $499. They measured me I was Large. 3- While I was at the Bayou Bicycles I saw a rack that sells for $40. The price is written all over it everywhere. Couple of days later I went there to buy it. Different guy this time wanted to charge me $50!!!! I said "it says $40 on it!" he told me that's "the old price". I said ok, how much you'd charge me to put it on? He says "$40+ up to $60" depending on how difficult it'd be. GNO installed it for $2 (two dollars) His supervisor was there, I went up to him and kindly explained him it's inconvenient to have wrong prices on the items because such in my case, I rode all across town to buy this item. He simply replied "So what?". I carried on another 5 minutes until I was convinced that this wasn't going anywhere. He told me things like, he doesn't care, he doesn't manage the website, he is not responsible of the prices on the items on the shelf. I gave up and left. FINALLY, I ordered that "$50 rack" from REI.com, for $40 shipping+tax included and got it mounted for $2 at GNO uptown. I got the bike from GNO as well, they measured me, tweaked the bike. I went there next day with some ideas, they swapped some parts of the bike to my liking FREE of charge. Conclusion: It's really really hard to piss me off, but Bayou Bicycles did it with dedicated ignorance. I asked around and everyone got a bitter story of some sort with them. I love bike riding! I love it so much that I was completely bummed when the cheap, hard-to-use foot pedal air pump I had sitting in my garage broke while I was filling up my tires sucking all the air out. So, I turned to Yelp! I found this place, drove there, explained the situation and what I was looking for (an air pump that was easy to use but not break). The employee directed me to the right air pump. I bought it, he showed me how to use it, and I was on my way. Needless to say, I have not had any trouble with that air pump. Totally worth the money! And if I ever have any more bike issues, this is where I'm going! read more

I was in the market for a cruiser with more than 3 gears, I knew I wanted an Electra, and Bayou Bicycle has an amazing selection. As soon as I walked in the door, the Electra Tiger Shark, (painted to look like a WWII P-40 WARHAWK) caught my eye and I knew it was mine. Now the Tiger Shark only comes in a 3 speed, I already own a 3 speed bike. I asked the salesman if there was any way possible to switch out the internal gear hub with an 8 speed hub, without having to get an entire new wheel. Without hesitation I was given the exact steps it takes to achieve my desired results, from cutting out the old spokes, purchasing new spokes, purchasing the new 8 speed hub, and the labor costs. A bit of back story, I had gone to GNO cyclery first, they had a small selection of Electra cruisers, and when i asked them about swapping the 3 speed for an 8 speed, i was completely blown off saying that the ONLY way to do it was to change out the entire wheel, and Electra doesn't offer an 8 speed internal hub wheel in there catalog. So instead of selling me the $800 dollar bike I wanted, and $350 in parts and labor to upgrade the bike, he pushes me on a $299 7speed. I told him I would be in touch, and i walked out. Back to Bayou Bicycle, the employee helping me was Ross, he was very helpful and if he didn't know the answer to one of my questions, he did not hesitate to ask one of the bike mechanics. He wasn't pushy in any way, it was a great experience, Bayou Bicycle has earned my business for years to come. This review was on the sale of the bike/ sale of the upgrade. This is by far my favorite bike shop in the city. I really don't understand the negative reviews for the service department. Some reviews say the mechanics are rude but I think they are just direct and to the point. I've had SO many problems with attitude from mechanics at other bike shops but never at Bayou Bicycles. In my experience, the mechanics are very professional and have always done a great job servicing my bike. I won't bring my bike anywhere else! Charlie, the owner, is really committed to his shop and to the biking community. I've never bought a bike there but when I've shopped for accessories, everyone is super nice and super helpful. I just moved to the city and had to leave by beloved bike. There was no more room. As soon as I got here. I am not kidding the first day I got here I found a junker on craigslist. I use my bike as my main transportation but I do NOT look like a cyclist. These guys were great. They treated me well without judgement. My new Betsy and I are exploring the city.
