Golf's equivalent of Sun Tzu.
Several weeks ago I took a lesson with Alex where we discussed whether or not it would be wise for me to try and change my shot shape from what I like to refer to as an "aggressive draw" (the haters will call it a "hook," and the truly jealous occasionally refer to it as a "pull hook") to a fade.
Having studied me as a student for several years, Alex pulled one of the most Art of War tricks I've ever seen and the results have been uncanny - instead of helping me work on hitting a fade, Alex told me that trying to hit a fade was a "bad idea" and that he didn't believe in people "changing shot shapes." Frustrated, I consciously tried to groove a more controlled right-to-left shot shape. Subconsciously, however, Alex's mastery of the dark arts had taken hold and my urge to do exactly the opposite of whatever he tells me on the range silently took over. While this may, on the surface, seem like a negative review, it's the exact opposite because I know this is exactly what Alex knew was going to happen.
This afternoon, only three weeks removed from our last lesson, the left miss was out of play and I had grooved a lovely DJ-like cut. Thanks, Alex! read more
