Went straight to the beer section as I wanted to check out what sours and stouts/porters they had. I'm glad they had a good selection and from breweries that are local and out of state. I'll be back and maybe I'll ask one of the folks working there about beer in general. This is not your normal corner store with a 6-pack of budweiser or coors light in the fridge. I am revising my review and upgrading it to five stars. Since my earlier visits a few years ago, my last few visits there have been very positive. The woman who works there is friendly and very knowledgeable about the beers they sell. The selection is good, and the prices are reasonable (and in many or most cases they do post the prices). How have I not reviewed this place yet? A true curated craft beer store. Not the place to get coors light but the place to get the freshest Humble Sea IPAs, Pliny the Elders, Rare Barrel sours, Anchorage stouts, and maybe... just maybe (if you're lucky) the odd Cantillon bottle every now and then. I've spent more money here than is healthy, and yet I keep coming back, must be the customer service ;) Also a very good whiskey selection behind the register (mid/high end scotch & bourbon). I thought it couldn't be done but this place gives BevMo a run for their money in terms of selection for Belgian or Belgian style beers. They are priced a bit higher than BevMo but this is pacific heights so one expects to pay a premium while shopping here. There was only one staff member there which might be enough as this place does feel like a corner liquor store. Some wine options though I didn't look much into it. After picking up a taste style profile I was recommended a beer (will try and report back) along with my regular Maudite. 4 Stars as the beer selection alone makes it worth a visit. read more

My three star rating is purely subjective, but then isn't that what Yelp reviews are all about? I love beer but I do not like sours and I rarely drink Belgians or anything with more than 5% or 6% alcohol by volume. If you are like me, about 70% of this store is not for you. They have a fair selection of six-packy stuff. (I got a six pack of Anchor Steam and a six pack of Pilsner Urquell, which are both solid brands but also pretty widely available). I was pleased to see that they had White Rascal, which I do not see often, so I got six of those, too. I was kind of hoping that they would have a singles section -- they have a few odd singles, tucked in the back of the store but not a huge number and they are kind of hard to dig through, since they are in crates. If you are into sours, Belgians or barrel-aged beers, this place might be for you... but those are just not my thing. read more

This is the kind of small bottle shop I hope always has a place in SF. They carry the sort of rare brews that remind me of once upon a time hunting for a special CD at a local music shop. This is a clean, wonderfully organized liquor store that has super rare beer, liquor, and wine. I feel like a kid in a candy shop when I come here and although the place is small I can walk in circles many times and still be intrigued and amazed at the selection and beauty of this store. If you're into unique alcoholic beverages, whatever the type, (they even have unique non-alcoholic beverages) you can definitely find it here. We've ordered beer by the case here and have never been let down. Steve and Betty are amazing, they're so friendly and knowledgeable about their products, I often buy what they suggest with no regrets. This place is NOT for people looking for the regular crap they sell at the grocery store, this is a connoisseur's sanctuary. I'm so glad I found a place that loves alcohol just as much as I do. Not guaranteed to have it, since they do have a smaller selection than, say, BevMo, but they have some things here that I haven't found there. (GO GO RUSSIAN RIVER BREWERY!) When I asked about it, the owner told me, "Most of my customers are well-educated, and know the approximate prices for most bottles. I have better things to do with my time than make price labels." YESSSS! Victory is mine! It's a small store packed to the brim with tons of craft microbrews (932 to be exact) from many breweries we can't really get on the east coast, so quite the joy to browse. As expected, they carry Pliny the Elder and keep it behind the counter with a one per person purchase limit. I was lucky enough to have it on tap at Toronado the night before so I picked up a bottle at the store to bring back for my beer nerd boyfriend. Otherwise, this is certainly a place I'd kill to have in CT. Tons of harder to find Dogfishhead Brews, all the Russian River I could dream of, Jolly Pumpkin, Drie Fonteinen Oude Geuze Golden Blend...it just makes me so sad I couldn't bring 'em all home on the plane! read more

I've been visiting Ales Unlimited for a couple years now, almost always with very positive experiences. The selection of hard-to-find and seasonal beers is worth the visit in itself. My last trip over there will probably be my last though. I'd been looking to find a rare seasonal beer this week which I knew was probably going to be fruitless, but nonetheless I contacted Ales to try my luck. Rather than just letting me know that they didn't have any (he says they do but don't want to sell it), the owner criticized me for not asking the question in person and accused me of being a reseller on eBay. I totally get it, rare beer and liquor can be exclusive and can sell out quickly, but there are a million ways to tell a customer that something isn't available without being a jerk about it. Stopped in to pick up a couple of large-format beers, after taking a cab to what is essentially a bar desert. Not dessert, there is nothing sweet about that problem. Instead, we decided to grab a couple, shove then in my purse, and go drink in the park like a bunch of hobos. Okay, well-dressed, well-showered hobos. We did, however, skip the paper bag accoutrement. I was looking for the Track 7 White Stout (excellent if you haven't tried it), and she didn't have it. This would normally be a strike, but she knew of the brewery and knew that the reason she didn't have it was because they didn't bottle it. Winner. She has an immense amount of beer knowledge, and is willing to order anything that she can get her hands on. In the meantime, she'll be super nice and suggest other beers that might fit the bill for what you're looking for. She has a ton of beers in stock as well, so don't fret that you're just going to have to order everything from her. If I were looking for a local beer shop to call my own, I would have found it. read more

Not at Bevmo or any of your run of the mill stores. Not Carried by the high end bottle shops in my home base of San Diego. In fact deep Google search, a dozen phone calls, and a few Emails revealed only one other place in Cali had it. But the folks here were efficient, organized and friendly. So, i placed my order. There's a huge selection of beer here, but there's also a number of beers that are also super pricey. I think the selection is great, but it'd be great if there were prices on everything. I picked out 2 different stouts and one was $27 while the other was $20 - a bit pricey for a beer. At the end of the day, there's a good selection and they've got plenty of Pliny for $6 a bottle which is a lot more ideal than a $27 stout. He introduced me to beers that i had yet to know existed and even had in stock beer from NICARAGUA that i couldn't find anywhere else including the mission district. This market only contains the best of the best and nothing below that mark. From organic drinks and treats to wines galore this market is one that i wish i had closer to my home and is filled with so many things you would want to try its mind blowing. I have been shopping at Ales Unlimited for over 10 years and proprietors Steve and Betty have become neighborhood friends. Even though I don't live in the neighborhood! Their beers are highly curated as has been observed by other initiated customers. Humble Sea beers for eg. have been become my go-to beers and it gives me extra reason to visit the store. Sure, it may be a few bucks cheaper if you order it directly from the brewery but you have to meet minimum purchases to save on shipping and if you're like me who has limited refrigerator space, you may only want to pick up a pack at a time. Steve has also helped me in so many ways in the past.... source ad hoc wines for a sibling and delivered purchases for me as a non-car owner. Ales Unlimited is my go to beer bottle store in San Francisco. Every time I go in I feel like a boy in a candy store. There are over 900 distinct bottles on the shelves and new bottles are always coming in. I'm continually amazed at how well they are able to stock rare beer. Steve and Betty know a lot about beer and will be more than happy to discuss all the happenings in the beer world since your last visit. They have a handle on what's new and interesting and will let you know when stock is expected or will even special order items for you. There are other beer stores in San Francisco that have large bottle variety. However, they don't have the level of customer service as Ales Unlimited. As a regular customer, I'm greeted by name and Steve and Betty will recommend new arrivals based on my preferences. I almost don't don't have to peruse the shelves any more: I just chat up whoever is working and I walk out a very satisfied customer. My only real complaint about Ales Unlimited is that I have to walk up to Pacific Heights to get there. But, if that hill is a moat to keep out all but the dedicated beer connoisseurs, then I really can't complain. read more

Went to check this place out on a Sunday. Walked in to browse to run into Kinder Surprise eggs!! We asked about it because we thought it was banned in the U.S., but I guess this one you can distribute here! we got so excited that we bought four eggs. I think they were $3.50 each... On to the beer, which was the real reason I came! I saw tons of Belgian beers! it was as if I was back in Brussels, Belgium! I ended up buying some IPAs instead, but their selection for beers was wide! it looked like as some of their more rare beers were by the register. It was the owner's wife who rung is up, she was very nice! I would come back here again to get some more beer! it just sucks how deep into the city it is and parking can be a little tricky to find since the store is on a corner around residential streets. read more

The shelves are stocked with a expansive variety of beers - foreign and domestic, craft and trappist, sour and barrel aged - with an emphasis on Belgian. The prices are on the higher end for some of these, but you're paying for quality, a one-stop experience, the expertise of the owner/buyer, the fact it's a mom n' pop shop, and location. (I mean lets face it, if you're living in SF and shopping here, you can afford a few extra bucks.) Take advantage of the owners knowledge and start up a conversation with him as you look around. SO worth a special trip! I found this place via a complicated search for my GF's favorite specialty item- Floris apple beer, brewed in Belgium. Apparently it's only buyable in California at this place and one place in LA - (not counting Speisekamer german restaurant in Alameda, where she lives, and perhaps some other rare exceptions that are not retailers.) It's a tiny place but all of their selection is like that. Not only is it a lesson in beer to browse here- the owner, Steve, is a fabulous good guy. Before coming I called him to ask about help with orders, and he more than sold me. I mentioned occasionally hitting Bevmo for large orders of special items and he said, "they're not even on my radar". It's true. A large-ish order resulted in flexibility on price (well, they were running 10% off on limited edition Christmas brews anyways, so it wasn't that big a stretch to ask). Then by surprise, he chased us on the way out to throw some delicious imported brandy chocolate in the box. I like getting things thrown at me in this manner. If you do too, go here. You will be in beer heaven. There seem to be a few other similar places in town- one I can name is Healthy Spirits in the Castro (see my 5 star review). This grocery maintains a puzzling foothold in the Pac Heights neighborhood east of Fillmore. It's just one block from two larger, (at least) competitively priced corner groceries on Fillmore. Yet it persists, 1) by feeding off the High School across the street (for which it is both cafeteria and afterschool club - America's youth is bred on the convenience stroe diet)) 2) by offering the surprisingly crucial convenience of one less block to walk and 3) by saving pac heighters from having to show their unprepped faces in the public sidewalks of fillmore. All of this is besides the point as to why this is my (and surely others') corner store of choice in the neighborhood. It is run by a family of three, all of whom hang out by the window or on the corner most of the day. This provides a notable iota of community in a "prestige neighborhood" where money and bourgeois elegance have renovated away most other signs of life (cf. the robot-operated laundromat next door). Bonus charms include their (very) DIY sales signs and the SF sports broadcasts that regularly filter out on to the street from their TV. read more

Betty and Steve care about what they carry in their store and always introduce their customers to fantastic new wines and beers. My latest favorite is Grüner Veltliner. An Austrian white. Fantastic pairing with my latest outing for oysters at Hog Island. ' Betty makes homemade zucchini bread, chocolate bread and lemon bread. They will special order anything you want so you don't have to go running all over town to find stuff you want. I'm a huge fan of Thomas Kemper Ginger Ale and they always have it on hand for me. If you live in the city, this is one of the best places to find some of the finest and rarest beers available. The selection is endless and I always end up buying more than I intended to going in. They also cellar things away and sell them at a later date so if you missed out on cellaring some beers, you can always refill when they sell these vintage bottles. The only reason for going with 3 instead of 5 stars is their pricing. Pretty much everything here is going to be marked up a few dollars than anywhere else. For my most recent trip, I paid $15 for a beer that I found a week later for $10 just outside of the city. Generally, the convenience is worth the extra mark up, but it is still something others should be aware of. read more
