Virginia when the winter gets colder to maintain their stock and tomatoes are brought in from Georgia and Florida. I am a firm believer that good food is all about good ingredients and I am constantly underwhelmed by the selection and quality of the produce at my nearby Giant Eagle on whittier street and trendy Kroger's in the Brewery District. This week at Evelyns I got some of the biggest and hardy sweet potatoes for just .79 a pound and equally delicious tomatoes for 1.99 a pound. I also had my eye on the abundant and fresh supply of sweet onions, zuchinni, cabbage, and squash. Again the quality is superior to local grocers and prices are competitive. If you are not familiar with this part of town it can be tricky to find, south on parsons avenue just beyond the old schottensteins. The address is Marion rd but it is not marked, You will see E. Barthman on the west side, and Evelyn's is on the opposite side. Hours are Mon-Saturday 9:00-5:30 from Dec-March and 9:00-5:30 Mon-Sun April-November. I often call ahead to see what they have each week. I am never disappointed!

The first and most important reason is that it's free. Pretty much none of the other fam markets in the area have free fall fun, but you truly pay for very little at Brown's. I also love that they have rotating food trucks, so there are different options every time I am there. I enjoy grabbing produce from the market store and have gotten boxes of apple "seconds" a few times now for a better price than other markets. Lots of cute photo opps and plenty of parking. Definitely worth adding to your fall itinerary.

The moment I walked in, an older white guy -- who didn't have any uniform, badge, or anything indicating he even worked there -- snaps at me, "Do you have an appointment or something?" with the worst attitude like I was bothering him just by existing. I tell him no, I just need to look at tires, and he fires back with, "Well we can't see you till Sunday or Monday, I don't know what to tell you." Cool. Fine. Whatever. But I still needed a quote, so I go up to the counter. The older lady working the desk? Even worse attitude. Didn't greet me, didn't ask what I needed, just acted like helping me was the biggest inconvenience of her day. At that point I realized if this is how they treat someone before they even get the job, I definitely don't want them touching my car. I just left. I'll take my money to a shop that actually wants business and knows how to talk to customers.
