Everything looked very good and the woman working there is quite friendly. I went here hoping to pick apples, but they don't offer pick your own. They do have many available for purchase in half peck bags though and they really are good for being home-grown. So when I arrived at the Amtrak station, I asked one of the helpful agents, what I had just seen. He informed me that it was the mid-week farmers market. When I was done with my very short meeting, I took off to explore this delightful little market. It was only about two blocks long, but it had an amazing assortment of vendors. Traveling by train for the day, I was limited to what I could buy, If I lived local, I would have had shopping bags full. I did buy some scones from one bakery, for a snack later in the day and for my breakfast the next morning. Again, if I were local, I would have bought some fresh vegetables, homemade sausage, fresh flowers and so much more. The vendors that I spoke with were good ole country friendly and I could sense their passion in the products they were offering. In addition to the vendors, a local radio station was broadcasting live outside one of the near-by restaurants. Music to shop by is always a nice touch. As i left the market, I wandered in a different direction then when I arrived and stumble upon a sign alerting parkers not to utilize a lot on Friday night and Saturday. Why? It is a little south of the city and west of the interstate but it is absolutely worth the detour. It is a rustic place called the Apple barn and parking is right in front. Their website gives a lot more information about it being more than just the main shop that is in the barn. They began as a family apple orchard and expanded over the years into a collection of attractions including two restaurants, a general store, a creamery, a winery, a candy factory, and a Christmas shop, all centered around the original barn built in 1910. We only visited the barn with the bakery goodies and the very friendly staff who helped us get some delicious snacks for the trip back to the hotel. It was great! Even if you don't plan to buy anything, it's worth taking some time to visit to get a snack for your trip or, if you are going to walk around the site, for the extra visit. We found it to be one of the more enjoyable stops to the area capping off a great visit to the Springfield, Ill area.

From apples to Brita pitchers to shoes to beer and liquor!! You can find it all here. They've improved the bakery over the years and they do have a nice specialty dips and cheese section. We recently tried the Fredrik's Meijer brand frozen pizzas and they were awesome! The crust was so crispy and delicious as were the toppings. One of the things that has changed over the years is the number of employees that work the lanes. Hopefully you love to self check out these days because that's pretty much what you're going to find.

The fruit combinations vary as you can choose from mangoes, watermelon, cucumbers, pineapples, coconut, honey dew melon, jicama, and more. The flavors of the fruits are enhanced with a squeeze of fresh lime juice, Tajin, and Chamoy (I usually only get a little bit), and a little salt. The cup in this post costs $8 but I've also seen them put together a large container for $10, and believe me, you can't beat that cost for healthy eating options and snacks in Los Angeles!
