This two star review is solely based on the cashiers customer service. Hopefully this gets the attention of management. I have visited the store on two occasions. Bring a quarter to use the shopping cart. You get it back. The store is great! Exciting things around every corner. Probably the best part was the the inexpensive fruits and veggies and the huge selection of hummus, charcuterie, dips and salsa type things! Didn't see any chickpeas though. They might want to stock those, lots of Indian folks are patrons. But then you get to the check out. The cashiers here have the easiest job in the whole store, you'd think they could at least crack a smile. All they have to do is sit there, not even stand up, scan your groceries and toss them into your cart. It's your job to bag your own groceries and supply your own bag. Both times the cashiers were borderline hateful. Not even a "you're welcome" when I thanked these awful people. Kinda ruined the experience. read more

This place suuuuucks! My first time was weird (I came in on opening day) but I expected things to be chaotic due to the rush of people. They were nice enough to buy my cart rental? the first time, but I really don't know why they have this pay for a cart policy. Carts are worth like $75-150 a unit so I don't see how this would deter someone with malicious intent and some rolls of quarters. Several times, I've seen confused couples rooting around for 25 cents in their car so I just give them mine. So at square one people are already annoyed, there's also no baskets for more minimal trips. When you get a cart you have to go directly through the traffic coming out of the store, very stupid design. They should really move the produce to the back or something, they create a traffic jam right when you enter the store. The products aren't that bad, they're cheaply priced and they have some stuff you can buy in bulk. Good selection of meat and produce for sure, just be prepared to wait in line for a while when you're done. So the cashiers sit on a chair behind the belt, do not smile and do not greet you. I've dealt with 3 different employees since they opened and had the same experience each time basically. They also don't bag your stuff, and sucks for you if you didn't rent a cart. I did this once, only needed a couple things, so they stole a cart from someone who had just bagged their groceries and forced them to eat the 25 cents had I not taken the cart back and returned it to them. It's only a quarter, but how annoying! I also kind of can't believe this happened, but the last time I checked out, the guy with the heavy accent and terrible attitude working as cashier loaded my stuff into the cart, then proceeded to PUSH the cart into my abdomen as I'm trying to finish payment on the keypad. I pushed the cart back into place so I could finish paying for my purchase and he pushes it back into me. I get it that you guys see a line of 12 customers and notice there's only 1 cashier and don't care about it, but I won't be physically prodded to make up for your terrible workflow system. I really wish Fresh and Easy pulled through and stayed here, Aldi is a terrible substitute! A food 4 less would've been better haha. read more

NON-EXISTANT cashier service. First of all, the store is small and creepy, and does not carry 70% of the stuff we need. The store is empty, yet when you want to check out, there is ALWAYS one cashier, no bagger, and about 8-15 people in line. We went three times during the week during six months, and same terrible experience, so will never return to any Aldi. I don't see this ALDI lasting very long, as there are so many markets on Mira Mesa Blvd including VONS and TARGET a couple of miles down the road. I would NOT recommend this place at all. As much as a new grocery store was needed in Mira Mesa, this place really really sucks. I could get used to the bizarre things like needing to remember a quarter to get a shopping cart. The weird layout and horrible employees really do it in though. The location is great but just don't bother. I didn't realize that this was affiliated with Trader Joe's in any way. It resonated much more with a cross between Smart and Final and a warehouse style grocery experience. I would have really enjoyed having some of my favorite Trader Joe's products in this store, why not? I've shopped at this store twice. There was a decent crowd in Aldi's, but it was not the crazy zone that some of the other grocery stores would have been the week of the holidays. On the positive side, I found a Christmas red set of nested BPA Free cooking bowls with lids, some $5.00 candles, and some "half the fat" vanilla ice cream (in their frozen sweet zone - the aisle of shame). I purchased some basics: eggs, salad, spinach, cilantro, red apples, lemons, and ginger bread cookies. The produce was fresh. I bought some frozen fish/meat - which was very plain, extremely basic...thank God I've been working on my cooking and know how to at least add butter, dill weed, and garlic! Bring a quarter for a shopping cart. Before I realized that you could get your quarter back, I was fuming about this. How dare a grocery store chain charge you for using a grocery cart! I was not impressed, then I realized that you actually can retrieve your quarter at the end of the shopping experience. This is a way for them to cut corners and not hire someone to retrieve shopping carts strewn all over the parking lot, but still... it came across like this store doesn't really care at all about customer service. The policy where they place your groceries in the cart - and allow you to bag your own groceries... hmmmmmm --- meh. This is also a policy which is a slap in the face of customer service. When I asked the grocery clerk about this, she said "we do things different here". I replied "different is not always better." read more

Yay! Aldi grocery store in Mira Mesa opened today! Finally, a grocery chain opened in Sorrento Valley zip code after a lengthy wait. Until late 90's, there used to be an IGA food market at this newly opened Aldi location. It closed down in Spring of '98. Neighborhood residents were hoping for another food chain to appear at this good 'ol IGA location. After giving up hope, we saw 'Fresh & Easy' opened in 2007 after almost 10 years since IGA closed its doors, only to see yet another grocery chain to go away in 2015. Now once again, we'll keep our fingers crossed looking forward to Mira Mesa Aldi, the first Aldi in central San Diego to stick around here long term. Brand new from ceiling to floor, the store is bigger and better inside than I expected. At first, I thought the choice for each food-group product is limited but the overall experience was quite rewarding with low prices (even on organic foods and gourmet items), with overall faster shopping done in lesser time, as 90% items are Aldi exclusive brands that includes 'LiveGfree' (gluten-free), 'Simply Nature' (their trademark for organic and non-gmo items - which I would very much like to see them expand on every food groups including fresh produce). Right now, the choice for Organic foods in the store is quite limited. There's nothing exclusive on Breakfast cereal aisle, mostly common ones like cornflakes, rice crispy, cheerios etc. Although I'm happy to see refrigerated packaged meats and cooked gourmet foods at best possible price than any other store, I want to see other packaged items like low sodium, no preservatives "organic whole wheat tortillas" and grass-fed organic dairy products, that's trending in every store, not just health food stores. Aldi being an iconic German food-chain, I would also like them to bring some popular European items like ages old British cereal, 'Weetabix' and Britain's popular 'PG tips' black tea. For now, Aldi's German Schogetten decadent chocolates (for $1.49) are keeping me happy! On my first-ever visit to Mira Mesa Aldi, a shout-out to the store-manager and also to cashier Lester, who were patient, upbeat and helpful in answering my questions. read more

This store cashiers need to be well trained. It is the third time very bad attitude I experienced. So I have to speak out. Today's cashier name is Julia. She threw all my stuff everywhere and after purchasing I asked for receipt. I asked politely : " can I have my receipt please?" She replied: " don't yell at me!" WHAT?! That is yell?! Great little store if you don't need 40 choices of ketchup and four aisles of frozen food. I like the edited selection of a little bit of everything plus grrrreat prices on produce and protein. Fresh Atlantic Salmon under $8.00 lb, conventional chicken drummies .59 lb,, .95 for a box of fresh button mushrooms and only .29 lb for bananas. Whoooeeee. read more

A little grocery store that packs a punch. It offers all the same type of groceries that the big boys do at lower cost. Most of the products are their own brand of groceries but with the same quality as the name brand stuff. Oh bye, that shopping carts are locked but accessible by inserting a quarter. Staff was excellent, everyone is super friendly and everything is placed nice and neat. My disappointment was with the fruits. Not a big selection and strawberries and oranges I bought were spoiled. There's no deli or hot food section. I'll definitely be back but won't be my preferred store to shop at. read more

Nope. I'm unimpressed. First of all, the store's layout is confusing, random stuff in random places. Secondly you will have to pay a quarter to get a cart; otherwise you will be carrying all of your groceries in hand while your shopping. Who carries quarters with them anyways? You are out of luck if you forget your quarter. So with 50 lbs of groceries falling out of your sore arms, all you want to do is just pay and go... but no.... you will have to stand in line FOREVER. There was only one cashier Saturday night, seriously, what were they thinking? 10 shoppers in front of me argh! I wanted to check it out because they advertise good prices; however, even that was disappointing. I can find better deals at Trader Joe's, Sprouts, or Grocery Outlet. Very few national brands in favor of "store brand/generic type " labels Need chainsaws or generators to go with your lettuce? This is the place for u. WIDE aisles that would probably pass 4 carts side by side at one time. And don't expect New York steaks with their off-site packaged items. Sirloin and burgers yes, and anything else u probably want, no. Credit for clean look, but this is definitely one to skip. Oh, and they don't have hand baskets either. Who does that? read more

This was my first experience at Aldis and WOW!! They have awesome prices on produce and the store is huge. You have to bring a quarter for the carts and must bag your items yourself, I have no problems with this because the prices are on point! Constantly understaffed. I realize the business model for Aldi is to sell their own store brands and to provide the cheapest possible shopping experience. But, their products look like sketchy knockoffs. The prices are okay. The items appear to be cheaper but the packaging seems smaller. I honestly don't see much of a price difference compared to other stores. The atmosphere is a bit sparse and depressing to me. The few employees that are in the store seem nice but very rushed. There are no self checkouts. So you are forced to wait for one of the few employees in the store to help rush you through checkout. And by "rush", they just drop your stuff back in the cart in a completely unorganized and haphazard way. The 25 cent cart deposit is annoying. read more

TL;DR: OK for fill-ins, weird layout, limited stock You won't be able to make this your only grocery store. Small location with basic essentials. First impression was frustrating, as they decided to put a narrow produce aisle directly in front of the entrance. This caused a funneling effect and enormous traffic jam that prevented people from moving into the rest of the store, compounded by the inexplicable decision to have multiple floor cleaners running through high traffic areas. It's weird to want to commit violence in a produce aisle, but here we are. Red bell peppers were overpriced ($2.40/lb), as were snap peas ($5/lb!). Selection was limited; not as in limited options of a given item, but lack of everyday items like steak cuts of beef, dill or fresh herbs, larger bags of frozen vegetables, or frozen corn. What they DID have, however, was generally reasonably priced. read more

This store has a dismal selection of products at discount prices. I had to wait on line with eight people in front of me (the store appears to be poorly staffed). One has to insert a quarter into a locking device to obtain a shopping cart. The 9 a.m. opening time is for Europe, not for the U.S. I'd rather pay a little more and find what I'm looking for. We have Aldi's in the midwest and have for years, so it was nice to see them come to San Diego. I use the one in Escondido since I go to the Home Depot a lot. I have to say they have gotten so much better quality then what I had before. I appreciate the low prices on produce and dairy, but what I live for there are one time buys. We eat a lot of hummus and veggies and they have the coolest flavors that you wouldn't think we good but are. (Dill Pickle, Black Bean and my personal favorite Green Curry.) But they also have a great selection of wine and cheese as well as meats. We are former military so we shop a lot at the commissary, but I have to say this is my favorite place to shop due t the coolness factor. The one thing you won't find at an Aldi's are shopping carts all over the parking lot and they are all very clean. Definitely worth the trip. read more

Finally an Aldi in Mira Mesa. I would always go to the Escondido location. I love Aldi. They always have the best prices!

I just left the Mira Mesa aldi location about 10minutes ago. The cashier was very unprofessional and rude. I literally go there 2 times a week and this was my first time forgetting to bring a quarter. So I didn't get a chance to get a shopping cart. So at check out . She said go ahead and use my cart , but give it back ASAP. I literally just pulled to the side to put my 7 items in my bag. As soon I just put 2 items in my aldi bag that I paid for. She then said. are you done with the cart. I said no, she said could you put your items down on the counter because I need the cart. There was another cart right next to her 2 lanes down. I said I could grab that cart for you. So I did and gave it to her. No response, rolled her eyes , and breathes heavy. As I returned HER cart and walked away the cashier said next time if you don't have money, I would be more than gladly give you a quarter. VERY sarcastic cashier. I really looked forward to Aldi's as I heard raves from friends in other parts of the country. Visiting it a few weeks after it opened, my immediate impression was that of walking into a warehouse. I think I expected something along the lines of Fresh and Easy. I'm sure some of their generic brands are good, but I like some selection other than store brand. Paying for a cart is not something I want to bother with. And who wants to wait until 9 a.m. to grocery shop? Employees were not friendly or helpful at all. That area of Mira Mesa (I know they like to think they are in Sorrento Valley) needed a store, so it meets a need. The parking leaves a lot to be desired as it's a small lot shared by a lot of stores in that mall. Even their other store, Trader Joes, has taken on a different atmosphere since they were taken over by this German parent company. One night there was only one cashier and the line was long. Not worth waiting. When I made a purchase on my first visit, I didn't realize that I'd be bagging. (which I don't mind) But the item just sat there and the cashier didn't even acknowledge my presence to tell me they don't bag the items. Won't be returning and my family members have no interest in Aldi's either. t read more

I was so happy when I saw an Aldi opening locally. I've shopped in them when I lived on the east coast. They have insanely low prices and many amazing products (try their coffee cakes!). Many of the products are their own brand. Overall, my family and I love coming in to shop here for our groceries; I'm always amazed at how little it costs for all we end up getting. read more

I have been an enthusiastic Aldi shopper for probably 5-6 years. I've shopped at a number of Aldi stores in Florida and California, and I always tell everyone how great Aldi is! I was very excited when this Mira Mesa location opened about 6 months ago because I was driving 20 miles to get to the next nearest store. But lately this store has been a constant disappointment. For many months now, every time I go in, they are out of something they have routinely carried in the past that I routinely need to buy. Today it was 3 things out of maybe 12 total items on my shopping list: Casa Mamita Organic Fire Roasted Salsa (the BEST), Bolthouse Farms Green Goodness (yum!), and Little Salad Bar Homestyle Ranch Dressing (my fiancée's favorite... I usually buy a jar each week, but they've had no stock for about a month now). Meanwhile, if you want mediocre salsa, carrot juice, or sugary bottled salad dressing, they've got you covered. A few months ago, it was their Great White bread that everyone in my family loves... they were out of that for about a month, but it seems to be back in stock now. Whoever is managing the inventory at this store needs to pay closer attention to what people want to buy. Just ask the checkout clerks...
