Blake's Orchard & Cider Mill - Plain Donut

Blake's Orchard & Cider Mill

Blake's is the Disneyland of cider mills. I appreciate all that Blake's has to offer throughout the…read moreyear but its events are overpriced. I attended this year's Sunflower Festival and could not believe a ticket just to get in was $14 and did not include sunflowers! The $14 fee is to walk through several rows of vendors selling things you get to see for free at plenty of local farmers' markets and fall festivals. You need to pay extra to pick sunflowers. I didn't buy it but I think the slushie with whipped cream topped with a donut was around $12, which is absolutely nuts. None of the drinks here are that large. Some years ago I went to the haunted house. I remember that the haunted house didn't take too long to walk through. It's always fun to go to pretty much any cider mill in the state in the fall, Blake's is no exception. My point is that there are many other more authentic less commercialized cider mills in the area that are worth visiting and where you get more bang for your buck.

I visited Blake's Orchard with my family in early September, and it was such a fun, wholesome day!…read moreThe kids couldn't get enough of picking apples right off the trees, watching fresh cider being made, and exploring the cheerful sunflower garden. We even grabbed a homemade pie to take home, which was the perfect way to wrap up the afternoon. Of course, we couldn't resist having cider and donuts on-site. There's plenty of outdoor seating, so it was an ideal place to enjoy the sunshine and take in the farm views. Everything tasted amazing, including the crisp, juicy apples we brought home. What really surprised me were the beautiful vegetable patches near the orchards. You can pick your own produce straight from the field. Entry is just $1 per car for a bag, and the prices are super reasonable: $40 for a full bag of apples and $30 for veggies. Honestly, it felt like a steal for fresh, organic produce. I walked away with bags full of farm-fresh goodness for less than what I'd spend at the grocery store. The produce I bought were cauliflower, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and eggplants. We had such a great time that I'm already planning our next trip back next year!

The Green Grocer - Good variety of produce direct from Eastern Market to your door!

The Green Grocer is owned and operated by Joe Lucido. It was started by his grandfather, then run…read moreby his father, and now Joe is the third generation. He picks up fresh produce at Eastern Market in Detroit and then has set appointments with regular clients to bring it directly to their homes. When we don't have time to (or don't want to) go to the store, we can get fresh produce as well as farm-fresh eggs and more brought right to our front door. He has a good variety of fruits and vegetables on the truck but if you want something a little out of the ordinary, let him know the day before and he will try to find it at Eastern Market for you. He always has good quality items for sale and stands behind them on the odd chance something wasn't what we expected. Joe operates in different areas on different days and we have a general day and time for him to stop at our house. Sometimes we text him our minimum list the day before and then, when he gets here, we also can go on his truck and see what else we want. If we need to skip a week, we just text him in advance. Joe is great at telling us when things are ready to eat or whether they need to sit for a couple of days. The Green Grocer's prices are reasonable considering you never had to leave your house (unless you go onto his truck, of course). I still watch for sales and hit the stores but have cut down on the number of trips and my time spent running around. So if this sounds of interest to you, call Joe, text him, or check out his website. Tell him I sent you.

As I'm prioritizing safety during this global pandemic but still would like to eat nutritious,…read morehealthful foods, I find that the way I shop is changing. It's tough to shop at my usual places where there are SO many out of stocks & where it doesn't feel like some stores are taking enough health/sanitizing precautious for their employees AND shoppers -- so, I've been trying new places like Frog Holler! From what I understand, they're typically a wholesaler that supplies to restaurants. But, they've adjusted their business model/offering quickly so that non-business shoppers like you & me can order from me! It was very easy/seamless -- they have a Shopify page (https://frog-holler-produce.myshopify.com/) to place your order & select a pick up time. It was a contact-less pick up -- they ask you for your name + you open your truck/door & they'll plop it right in. I went for The Original OG! (assorted organic bundle). The assortment changes but they have what's included listed out. My produce box was AWESOME - the fruits & veggies were really fresh. They also sell some breads (from a local baker), dairy/eggs, vegetarian items (tofu, tempeh, seitan, beyond burger). I will definitely be ordering again! Thanks for making it just a little bit easier to eat nutritiously during this time, Frog Hollow!

I was hoping for seasonal, local produce*, so this wasn't quite what I wanted. However, I am giving it 5 stars because it was exactly as marketed, and the produce was excellent. Plus, there was a ton of produce in the Pear-fect box (just $25), and the penny delivery during the pandemic is such a fantastic deal--Just $5 regularly isn't bad either! We even gifted some of the bananas to the neighbors because there were so many that were perfectly ripe and ready to eat! *There were fruits/veggies that aren't grown locally and several items that weren't in season, so they must have traveled quite a distance. If Frog Hollow were more connected to local farms, I think my parents would subscribe to a weekly box! I surely would!
