Time to time, there will be an employee handing out samplers (but like full size samplers) of new Cole's branded treats. This small new Woolies has taken over the old CommBank site, filling it with aisles of snacks, convenience foods and ready-to-eat goods. I don't think I've seen anything like it - not as big or well stocked as a supermarket, not as exxy and poorly stocked as a convenience store, it's perfect for busy workers rushing to or from work and in need of a grab-and-go meal. There's even a cafe onsite selling the cheapest coffee and cakes in Surry - $3 brownies, say whaaaaat? I'm yet to try the coffee here yet but boy has it been handy when I've been running to/from Central and needed to pick up a bag of washed spinach, a tub of yoghurt, a pack of bikkies or a bit of fresh fruit. It opens til late, heck it may even be open 24/7* - say whaaaaat? *don't quote me on that #wishfulthinking, but I'll check next time I swing by

Maloney's is fantastic for a bunch of other reasons as well - namely their amazing salads, gluten free products, fantastic range of fruit and veg, and tasty fresh gluten free vegetarian lasagne. There are many more Wooly's around the city, similar in size to this one. One of their competitors is Cole's. It is reasonably large, larger than most of the Chinese grocery stores in Chinatown, but Thai Kee and BQC are larger. Presumably because its only us gwei lo's who think that how a place looks and whether you can actually fit two people in an aisle is at all important. But these guys have also worked out that a purpose built coolroom for greens and fresh produce, and putting damp newspaper over leaves will give the customer some comfort that the produce is cared for at all. Compare the way the produce is stored and handled at other places and Jarern Chai looks a cut above - even if the stuff is exactly the same and just as cheap. Pontip still wins on overall variety and hard to get stuff but this place smacks it into the bleachers for presentation and stuff thats important to dumb white people even if it shouldn't be.

There are 599 Aldis in Australia, with 203 in New South Wales, alone. It's large (even though it's considered a 'Corner' store, which means it is smaller and meant to service a densely populated metro area). It has a lot larger meat department than what you would see in the States (though similarly, all the meat is prepackages i.e. there is no butcher on-site). Prices weren't too dissimilar to that in the States, and there was a large center area where 'special buys' were displayed.
