Interesting facts learned on fireflies: they like leafy dark areas, eat slugs, and snails and really lite up the park. You do not need to do a long hike to enjoy it, you can be standing near it within 2 minutes, which makes it perfect for quick stops or bringing people who are not looking for a big trek. If you do want a little more time outside, there are plenty of trails to make your walk longer. You can turn it into a loop or wander a bit in some fresh air. There are usually enough people around to remind you that you are in a park, but not so many that it feels crowded. It strikes a nice balance between social and being chill. Woods aside, there are areas to play, grill, and hang out. It is the kind of place that works well for a picnic or small gathering or a solo walk. Simple, pretty, and easy to enjoy. I wouldn't go out of my way for it, but I will be back.

I agree with the Yelper who said it's less busy than Chestnut Ridge. That's a big high point for me. I'll definitely be back.

The Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center is a cool little spot. The staff are super…read morenice. Inside the center you can hear wildlife sounds and learn what to look for. The standout for me was this amazing topographic map where you move the sand and it updates the contour lines live. I wish I had that when learning maps. They also run a bunch of events... I've done a luminary walk and an owl prowl, plus there are eagle nest outings and birding stuff. The gift shop is small but nice. Overall, if you're looking for a good nature outing, this(and the other sites they manage are great. Swallow Hollow is my favorite trail, but the whole area is awesome.

If you like the amusement park, and like to camp, and need accommodations, staying here will save you a huge change chunk. We camped here for the first time last summer, mid-August. It was our only kid-free camping trip of the season. The hub'ster and I had concert tickets at Darien Lake Amphitheater (basically in the theme park), and made a getaway out of it by staying here. The proximity to the concert was great. We didn't get sloshed, so drove back and forth to the show, but the desk told us that Ubers are a safe, easy option for transport that campers who are concertgoers use often. Speaking of the front desk, the staff was excellent. Very friendly, offered up useful suggestions without us asking, happily replaced our parking tag when I accidentally ripped the first one. It's nice when customer service staff goes above and beyond to make sure you know what you need to know. We stayed on electric site #22. The site was grassy and pretty level, with good shade. It was a larger site that we could actually wrap around, instead of having to back in. That's always winning in my husband's book. The bathrooms here were kept very clean, probably the cleanest state park bathrooms of all our camp travels so far. The facilities weren't new, but they were well cared for and tidy. Great job facilities crew! The park's amenities include a small lake with fishing and swimming, some sports courts/fields, great nature trails, and pavilion/picnic areas. I believe there is disc golf too. The hubs and I relaxed at the beach, and explored the trails. There was definitely more trail to trek than we had time for, so we're looking forward to getting out there again someday. Both my husband and I enjoyed our camping stay at Darien Lakes State Park very much. We ventured into nearby cute lil' Alden to poke around a bit, relaxed on the site, had a great time at the concert, and didn't miss our kids for a second! In our defense, it was only 3 nights away. Give it 4, and good-mom-miss-my-kids vibes would have probably kicked in. Probably.

After having some ice cream, we went for a quick walk throughout the park. This park really is great. It is a little small but that also makes it so nice. No need for maps or worries of getting lost, it's perfect for a nice walk. My son loves looking for all the wildlife especially if there are any ducks or fish. Luckily for him, there are plenty of ducks around here. Another nice thing about this park is that it is very scenic for photography. There were a few different groups there doing what looked like senior pictures or photos before an event. Whether you're looking for a nice walk, scenic backdrop or just a quiet place to sit on a bench and think, this park has it all.

I am amazed at how restful and beautifully maintained it is. The flowers were welcoming, the small waterfall enchanting, the trails curious and winding, and the wildlife amusing. I felt more relaxed and grounded after my visit than I have in a long time. The only negative was that someone was smoking weed on a park bench and the odor instantly turned me off. I'm sure smoking is not allowed, but I was chagrined that in this little section of The Garden of Eden someone would assume to make the place smell like a stoner's living room.

The bathrooms were very clean. If you plan on walking down Buffalo Creek and getting in the water - word of caution wear crocs or water shoes because the green moss will make you slip - also someone in our party got a leach on their foot and the kids said there were a ton near the mini falls so beware.

(We didn't realize that, while trying to find the place.) The path is about a mile. The park is well-maintained and there are three or four gazebos of varying size, if you'd like to have a picnic. There is a nice waterfall area that some people were swimming in. On the way back to the car, on the other end of the path, I noticed many beautiful birdhouses in the trees.

It was a moderately challenging (meaning some extended periods of walking uphill) and about a 3-1/2 to 4 mile hike. The day we went it was not buggy but we did encounter some muddy areas.
