I was referred to Dr. Albern Spoolstra by my regular Dentist for my double left wisdom teeth extractions after she saw that my lower left wisdom tooth was unfortunately chipped by my previous nut eating habits.
I went into Dr. Albern Spoolstra's Office on March 6, 2018 for a panoramic dental x-ray of my teeth and a consultation with Dr. Albern Spoolstra afterward. At the consultation, I got to look at my panoramic dental x-ray on the computer screen. Our consultation was brief, yet thorough. Dr. Spoolstra entertained all of my questions. I did inquire if I could have my wisdom teeth extracted with only local anesthesia. He stated that for wisdom teeth extractions, he prefers that all of his patients to be under general anesthesia. So I had no choice but to accept his treatment plan for me.
March 16, 2018 was my double left wisdom teeth extraction appointment. Originally it was scheduled for 1:30 PM, but I was called by his Assistant a few days before the appointment and it was moved up to 12:00 PM. When I checked in, I applied for Care Credit and used it to pay for this visit.
Immediately after that, I was brought into the Dental Surgery Room. Obviously I was nervous, but the Dental Nurses and Staff did an excellent job at reassuring me that everything will go well with the surgery and all will be fine. After being given a pill to dissolve under my tongue, vital signs monitors were attached to me. I like how I was not rushed into going under general anesthesia by the staff. Dr. Spoolstra came into the room, greeted me, and then proceeded with looking for a vein on my right arm for the IV sedation. He quickly found it and administered the IV on my right hand. The injection was quick, precise, and painless. I said a short prayer out loud as he administered the general anesthesia, and then I fell asleep and unconscious shortly after the prayer.
Before I knew it, I woke up after my double left wisdom teeth extractions. I was quickly escorted into the waiting room by one of the Nurses. I felt groggy, very dizzy, and nauseated from the general anesthesia. Right after I took a seat, I gagged and tried to hold my vomit. The Nurse came out with a bag, and I vomited. After my Mom took a picture of me smiling with gauze in my mouth and two thumbs up, I briefly laid down on the recovery bench. I wanted to rest up some more while trying to get over the dizziness. However the Nurse rushed me out of the Recovery Room and had me take a wheelchair escort to my Mom's car. Everything about this visit and surgery went very well, except for being rushed out of the recovery room, for which my Mom and I felt very disappointed about. Hence the four star overall rating.
Miraculously I was pain free the entire time, during and after the surgery, and I never had to take any of the pain pills that Dr. Spoolstra prescribed! I spent the evening resting up at home. Thankfully the next day, I felt well again and was able to drive to Los Angeles with my Parents, to attend a Memorial Service and play my violin for that Memorial Service!
Obviously a successful and pain free, double left wisdom teeth extraction and quick recovery are excellent testimony to Dr. Spoolstra's years of experience and expertise as an Oral Surgeon! However I believe that they can improve on the quality of their patient services by allowing patients more time in the recovery room to feel somewhat better, adjusted, and ready before discharging them home. I definitely did not feel ready when I was discharged from the Dental Office, and it was not hospitable of them to rush me out at that time.
Today, five days post-surgery, other than trying to adjust for not having two left wisdom teeth, caring for the dental surgery wounds, and eating a soft foods diet, my life is pretty much back to normal again. Thank you, Dr. Spoolstra and staff, for the successful double wisdom teeth extractions! read more
