There fish is by far the tastest around and you can choose from Cod, Haddock, Salmon and many others which are all cooked fresh when you order. The Chips are well cooked and always fresh. You can be sure that this Chip Shop is busy but is well worth the wait, the staff are always friendly and very efficiant. Excellent Quality food and Service. Well worth a visit.

The seating is unique, you can either be conventional and eat in the restaurant or eat in the bus. Yes this must be only place I've ever been to where you can eat in a bus. Near me there are no 'proper' chippies,we have lots of Chinese chippies (Who lets face it do…read moreawesome Chinese food, but the ones near me have never mastered the art of batter for fish). But no traditional English chippies, and by that I mean ones that cook things like they do by the sea, crispy bubbly batter and chips that taste like chips. Now,as much as I like fish and chips i'm not one for driving an hour to Blackpool for some (Not helped by the fact that I detest Blackpool these days). But i'd been told about Grandma Pollards a few years ago and as myself and Mrs Z were at a loose end the other day we thought we'd give it a try. First off the exterior, the front just looks like any other chippy/chippy restaurant, but round the back it is a different story. Not only can you eat your food in a parked up bus, they also have a picnic area right by the canal (see pics) and a lovely spot it is too! Being boring we decided to eat inside the plaice (see what I did there?) and we both opted for the same food namely jumbo haddock, chips and mushy peas,or to give it's real name, food of the mythical sky beings.... Large haddock said the menu, and bloody large it was too,it was hanging over the side of the plate large. It was also really, really lovely, the batter was crispy and bubbly in equal measure and the fish inside was soft, flaky and tasty. The chips did indeed taste of chips and the mushy peas were also of the top notch variety. Grandma pollard also sells home made pies (none of that Hollands mush) and their own cakes, and even though we were incredibly stuffed from our fish feast we decided to get a couple of pies and a brick sized vanilla slice to take home with us,all of which were very nice, especially the vanilla slab!! I am now very happy because i've found a proper chippy that is not too far away from home, and at the end of the day that's what's important in life,a proper chippy!!

Very nice staff, we met the owner who has been cooking them for 30 years in the same traditional manner, so if your travels ever bring you to Ossett, please stop in and enjoy a taste of Great Britain, with bits on!

They use fresh produce from suppliers as local as possible, which is always commendable considering they don't have to make any effort. Not only that but their fish is sustainable so they are not completely helping to rid the oceans of our beloved cod. Dockers also like to keep on the right side of the healthy ones among us - you can ask for your fish to be steamed or grilled if you prefer. Or for those of us who like to indulge, lets face it, every day, they have homemade desserts to top off your take away. Scrumptious.

However, being a recognisable brand name does not necessarily indicate that the service and food you receive will be quality. In the three HR branches I've visited, including this one, I've always ben disappointed. This particular outlet is found in the Oasis food court in Meadowhall. As you're buying from world famous Harry ramsden, theres instantly a premium on the prices you pay. If you're like me, you wont mind paying for quality. Sadly though, with HR, you're NOT paying for quality. I have no idea what you're paying for, but the fact is you could get a 75p bag of chips from a local chippy and enjoy them far more than chips from here, where you'll pay around £2 for the pleasure. Nothing tastes even halfway fresh, the chips are like eating McCain micro chips. I dont eat fish, but I'm told thats just as bad too. Its typical of the brand, seemingly. People are seduced by the name because they think its a mark of quality. It isnt. Its just effective brand promotion. If you're in Meadowhall, there are any number of better places to get your food from, all of which will provide better value for money.
