Based on uniqueness, taste, and presentation Al Meida is def 5-star worthy!…read more Lemme back it up for a sec...I am completely mystified by North African cuisine. To me it's this rich ancient culture with a territory of flavors i have yet to fully explore. I have only gotten a glimpse, and from what i've tasted - hand rolled sundried couscous, harissa, jasmine, preserved lemon, brik, orange blossom, etc - i'm hooked! So you can imagine my reaction when i heard Al Meida (a mobile food stand selling handmade Algerian pastries) was stopping by Detroit - my prayers had finally been answered! Have a look at the pics. The pastries were delicious and definitely unique. Unique in the sense that these are fruit (mostly date) based desserts (no chocolate or sugar rush here) and the hints of orange blossom and rose water are otherworldly. Strangely nostalgic, yet unknown. Aromatic and flavorful. It's all so foreign and new, yet i want more!

Oh. My. God. I…read morefound Al Meida's delectable Algerian pastries while at the Detroit Second Annual Holiday Food Bazaar held at Eastern Market. The name on the advertisement for the event attracted my attention, but I was not prepared for such a sweet, elegant woman selling sophisticated pastries beyond my experience. She laid out half-moon pastries on beautiful, inscribed plates and had mysterious, spice-infused cookies spread over her table. The sweet, exotic scents unlocked the doors to the southern Mediterranean and the culinary crossroads of Africa, French and Italian influences, and Arabic elements. At once I was hooked, and divested of all the cash I brought in one go. I had to try a little of everything as I bought a little of this sticky cookie and a bit of that lemon-brushed pastry. Names were unfamiliar, but the tastes immediately opened up a sun-baked world on my tongue. The surreal touches of citrus and dates blended together on my palate. My beau, a lifelong Detroiter, had significantly more experience with the Chaldean, Iraqi, and Arabic bakeries in Dearborn. We rationed out our purchases in small bites while sitting elbow to elbow at a rough bench which faced the glorious skyline of Detroit. This, in a nutshell, embodied the spirit of the city. Al Meida's crowning confection is the kaab el ghazal -- "gazelle horns" -- which are an almond paste-filled crescent moon "cookie" (but rightly they're a pastry) wrapped in orange blossom and rosewater infused pastry. The first bite taken a few steps away was an explosion of flavours and sensate impressions. My beau and I shared the kaab el ghazal in the mute silence brought by contentment, appreciation, and trying to experience how good something is. We only bought three and should have gone back for the rest. The baked products, their appearance, and the savoury flavours are good enough to wax poetic upon. I sailed off to a distant shore and discovered an unknown craving for orange blossom and other newly found subtle tastes. Al Meida has made her way out to Ferndale's Rust Belt Market on Sundays, thankfully sparing me trying to wend my way out to Ann Arbor's farmer's markets. An hour on the freeway on Saturday morning I could do without. This is another of Detroit's many gems, and I cannot laud the exotic delights waiting to be sampled care of enchanting Algerian recipes and considerable care for quality.

Chip, Chip, Hooray!…read more As the name implies, AATF makes tortillas. They also make tortilla chips and salsa. I've had their stuff for years now, and have always loved it. I introduced my boyfriend to their products, and he became a huge fan of their stuff, as well. Thus for his birthday, I thought, "Man, I really need to do something involving AATF chips." I got the idea into my head that I could commission a new flavor of chips. And it happened! A few months ago, I cold-called AATF and said something to the effect of, "Hi, my boyfriend is a huge fan of your chips, his birthday is coming up, is there any way you would make a new chip flavor for him?" I also stuck my foot out of the window because I thought the odds of lightning striking me were higher than this chip thing working out. But to my happy surprise, Lupe (AATF's owner, I believe) said, "Yes!" and we talked out the details. Not only did she agree, she was excited and encouraging. It is now a couple months later, and my boyfriend and I have just gotten back from the factory. I can't believe that this actually happened, or how gracious Lupe was, or how welcoming the factory workers were. Simply, we walked in the door and were treated with immense warmth. Lupe gave us a tour of the factory, showed up how the tortillas are made (let us try product that had been finished in the previous 10 seconds; talk about fresh!), talked to us about the process and answered our questions... and then sent us home with a BOX of goodies--three 2 lb bags of a new flavor, 2 bags of still-hot tortillas, and a company polo shirt. I should add that all of this was free. Lupe agreed to it simply because she wanted to, and it sounds like they also give tours to local middle and high school students. Great people, great company, great product. I just wanted to share this through-and-through happy story. The Ann Arbor Tortilla Factory turns out to be a warm and welcoming company, and one that for no reason other than sheer niceness goes to incredible lengths for its customers. They also make the best tortilla chips I've ever tasted.

I must start this review by saying I have never actually been to this factory. That in itself is…read morequite sad. But I digress... I received a small package of these addictive tortilla chips in a gift basket of goodies from Zingerman's. Look, I love Zingerman's as much as the next sane person, but these chips... it's like they are sprinkled with some type of voodoo magic that instantly makes them irresistible. I'm not kidding, I refer to these as crack chips. You can buy these addictive chips in certain Michigan grocery marts, or order directly from the company. Shipping is high, but well worth the price. I used to save Yelp rating stars as possible future barter, should the world descend into madness; however, these stars will be replaced by crack tortilla chips (which are kept fresh by storing them in an airtight container - you're welcome). The next time I am in Michigan, my first stop will not be to see relatives. It will be the tortilla factory. The next stop will involve foraging for a taco sauce that will burn my esophagus, but in a friendly manner. My next stop may or may not involve visiting the aforementioned people that might expect me to share my chips, only due to the familia bond. Most likely, this talk of possible tortilla chip sharing amongst family members will not happen. I've said what I've said.

Plenty of parking as it's right next to Target!…read more They have a cozy atmosphere and cool art all over the wall. The employee was nice. Unfortunately, they didn't provide a cup of water (I'm too cheap to buy water). The food was good! We ordered Falafel salad and rice and Chicken Shawarma bowl. Both were delicious! My husband pointed out that the garlic sauce on the chicken shawarma looked a little...like something else. But it was garlic sauce (yet it looks different in other people's pictures). Anywho, they give you big portions for affordable prices ($10)!! And it's tasty!

I was in the target shopping plaza on Carpenter Road when a powerful paying of hunger overtook me…read more I left left and right to see what is available to eat. I had seen this shot before, but had never been in. So I ventured in to the Brothers St., Food. It features Halal gyros and a few other Mediterranean options. I went up and ordered from the friendly man behind the counter . Although I was very hungry, I really only wanted something quick and small so I ordered the traditional Gyro without fries. I sat down and waited for my order, which was done in under five minutes. I took it home to eat and was very surprised at the generous size of the sandwich. The meat was flavorful. The tzatziki dressing was just the right amount. It wasn't dripping out of the bottom yet there was plenty of it. There was room to sat down and eight in as there are booths and a couple of small tables, but like I said, I was in a hurry. The bread was soft and overall, it was a very delightful sandwich . I would go back again and try other items. You should too!
