all the usual stuff in a mildly overdone-to-impress-the-tourists sort of way which is exactly the point except I don't really have any business in Alabama except the infrequent snack while driving because it occupies a significant chunk of time between my house and my non-Alabamish destination... but I'm kinda digging that the welcome center follows the Sweet Home Alabama motif and looks like a Navin Johnson inspired residence; very housey but built on a grander scale. on the plus side the bottles in the turkey out front have shrunk a bit and no longer occupy the entirety of the faux bird, on the minus side the outgassing and decomposition of plastic bottle plastics is killing us (ironically less quickly and possibly more painfully than consuming the original contents would have) read more

Large, beautiful rest area welcoming you to Alabama. There is a ton of parking for both cars and trucks. You can overnight here, too, if needed. There are clean, nice bathrooms and an info center across the hall inside. Tons of maps, state pride decorations, and TVs on to air all kinds of Alabama things. There was an employee present, but she didn't interact with me or welcome me in at all. The rest area being quite large also features a ton of picnic tables, including several under awnings to give shade for the summer months. There are plenty of tall, mature old pine trees throughout which, if you're heading east, may be your first up close encounter with the taller trees that say welcome to the southeast. This also makes for a pleasant home to lots of birds and birdsong. I took 30 minutes to get my daily walk around here at this pleasant place. read more

This is a fantastic rest area had a great introduction to Alabama as you leave central Mississippi and come into Alabama. As I parked the first thing I noticed was a little monument that said " Alabama We Dare Defend Our Rights." Honestly, I think Alabama gets a bad rap at times. Personally, I love this state. I am in Alabama often on business and almost consider it a second home. In fact, Birmingham, Alabama is my favorite city in the southeastern United States and would rate as one of my favorite cities in the United States. Anyway, this welcome center and rest area is a great introduction to the great state of Alabama to visitors leaving Mississippi and entering Alabama. This is a large rest area and the staff here were friendly and professional. The place is clean and well kept. I would definitely recommend here and give it five stars. read more

This welcome center is almost a life saver! The restroom facilities are clean and well-maintained. It is staffed for security purposes so you can always feel safe here and also, do you have parking and space to stretch your legs, walk your dogs or just plain get some fresh air. read more

Clean restrooms and friendly faces await you at this Welcome Center as you enter Alabama from Mississippi. There is a large room to pick up brochures of everything you can imagine in Alabama. B Vending machines are located outside of the main building. Be careful walking up to the building if it has been raining and leaves are down on the sidewalk... it can be a little slippery! read more

Nice welcome center. Bathrooms were clean. Vending machines were bare. Employees were nice. Truck/Hauler parking area was huge. Have a nice sign out near the entrance to take a pic. read more

Got here at 4:50 pm and was closed. Thought it might be open until 5 but just got the stare from the attendant when we tried to enter. Better luck for us next time. Area seems very nice and was a welcomed area for us to stop. read more

I was actually pretty impressed with this Welcome Center (well except for my first view being a gutted old pay phone booth; see my photo). The bathrooms are recently renovated and were really clean and modern. The overall space is attractive with ample room to picnic, walk your dog, stretch your legs, whatever. Definitely a welcome respite as you cross from Mississippi on I-59. read more

Plenty of trees with shade, clean facilities, plenty of parking. Shoot. Now this is a rest stop! While there were enough picnic tables to feed at least a dozen families stopping in for lunch after traveling the Mississippi countryside that I-20 offered, there are also some areas that need improvement. Namely, overflowing trash cans and an old pay phone that doesn't even have a phone in it. Folks seriously use pay phones in 2015? One of the few rest stops that I've seen that has the current governor's name all over it. Be it the Welcome To Alabama sign, the rest stop's building markers, or the interior- the governor's name seems to be everywhere. Just an interesting observation. Certainly one rest area that I feel confident in stopping for an extra long period and taking a nap under the trees. Sweet Home, Alabama! read more

What a beautiful rest area! It is huge! Best layout I've seen in many states! Lots of space for cars, vans, and extended camper van parking. Then a huge separate truck and RV, towed vehicle lot! Parking is behind the building, away from the highway! Picnic tables covered for shade. Outdoor water pumps scatter around. Unfortunately my hoses were still too short to reach to refill my water tank, 75 feet needed. But I was able to refill my water jugs and for that I'm grateful! I missed the sign for a dump station and didn't see a turn around to switch lanes. Sweet Home Alabama is correct! Thank you! read more

First of all, this is not your standard rest stop, this is High End rest stop. CLEAN, manned and welcoming. Large facility and many parking lots/picnic tables. Air conditioned! Lots of trees, and shade. read more

Alabama welcome centers like this one are better than others I have been to in other states. As others have stated, theirs are definitely on the high end side. This rest area is actually very nice. Rolling up and down the hills to come in and out is fun too, especially since where I live the land is flat as a pancake. They offer quite a few amenities. They have nice, clean restrooms and this place has staff on hand. In the welcome center, you can get maps and other things as well. Definitely get the road construction maps that they update quarterly; you'll thank me later. There are also outdoor picnic tables available to use if having something to eat as well. If you are coming into AL from the west, you should definitely make a quick stop here. It'll help make your travel through Alabama easier. read more

Got a chance to celebrate Alabama's 200th birthday at this welcome center during a visit! The staff was so accommodating and nice! They are very knowledgeable about the state & all it has to offer. Worth the stop if you're traveling through the area. read more
