I guess I would describe Dr. Phillips as sort of grandfatherly; he asked me questions about what I do and would comment on current news stories. The front desk staff and nurses were polite and professional. Marie, the contact lens fitter, is a nice lady who is patient, willing to explain everything and often just starts explaining things without you asking, and is dedicated to putting you in the best possible lenses. She also doesn't push you to buy contacts from them which is something I always worry about. I think Marie is part of the optical shop side of AOA (Optiks), but I'll just include her here. Minus one star because of the unpredictable doctor wait times. I always get an early morning appointment, and I've waited anywhere from -5 minutes to 70 minutes past my appointment time to be shown back.

I have cataracts, so there is always a little more going on than average. You can see optometry students or residents or attending physicians. If you opt for a student be prepared for the exam to take about 2 hours. The students are very thorough but have to clear things with the resident or attending. If you opt for the resident be prepared for the exam to take 1-1 1/2 hours. The resident has more experience but depends on their speed and thoroughness as to how long it will take. The attending is most experienced so tends to take the shortest amount of time but that also depends on their schedule. This past week I saw this years resident and he was not the fastest. He was super laid back and didn't seem to be in a rush to get anything done. He also had 2 other patients he was working on so this visit was longer than usual. I like that they are thorough here as an optometry school so I tend to come yearly to see someone. This may not be for everyone - especially those in a hurry. But with all my eye issues, I will take the extra time.

I hated glasses and since I hunt wilderness areas by myself for weeks at a time, losing my glasses would have been really bad. Dr, Sarah Hayes did my first surgery the first year Lasik was allowed in USA. My corrected vision went from 2800 to 2015! I had been blind all my life and now had hawk like vision. I was dumfounded!! Now 35 years later my vision had deteriorated to 2070. Dr, Hayes had retired and after some research I settled on Dr. Michaelson in Birmingham, Al. He is an intelligent and interesting person to talk to with excellent people skills. On the day of surgery, he was a different person. No joking around or laughing but all business. He is very thorough and over next few months I met with him numerous times for follow-up. So now after 3 months my vision is 2020 and getting better after each visit. I have 1 more visit in 6 months but I expect my vision to stay at 2020 or even improve some more. So if you are tired of wearing glasses that get broken, slide down your nose, always needing cleaning or just looking goofy in glasses, don't be afraid to get Lasik surgery. Its somewhat expensive but it will be the best investment you will ever make. I have gone now though 2 Lasik surgeries and have had no problems at all on either surgery. I consider Dr. Michaelson to be the best Lasik surgeon in Birmingham and possibly the entire South East.

Now I'm honestly not sure where his price is compared to others but he was definitely the right choice. Extremely thorough and took his time to fine out exactly what my needs were. I am a plastic surgeon so I needed great vision up close but also wanted things far away to be clear. We opted for monocular vision lasik. The surgery went great. Not only did the receptionist put me at ease, but the doctor provided tons of feedback, solutions, and prescribed a regime that cleared it right up. A few weeks later my boyfriend and I returned for an eye exam. My boyfriend is legally blind and has trouble with optometrists in the past, but he loved Red Mountain Eye Care. They were friendly, easy-going, and really listened to the problems he was having with his vision. I would highly recommend this great practice!
