Best meal I had this trip. Fantastic pasta. Generous truffle portions. Homemade apple cake

A bit out of the way, south of piazza maggiore (right next to the viale), this casual neighborhood spot has all the bolognese classics, with - wait for it - Sangiovese being the centerpiece. Pretty much anything the owner (who is probably your waiter too) recommends will be worth getting - mind you, what he recommends may or may not be on the menu :-) The classics are great, but pay attention to the specials, they are *good* - The risotto al sangiovese (if they have it) has chunks of Lardo della Colonata in it - which pretty much makes it an instant "MUST GET"... - The garganelli con crema di mortadella is addictive, and the ground pistacchio on it only makes it even better - the .. oh, why am I bothering. Just go...

This hidden restaurant serves excellent pasta, and the service is nice as well. I ordered the tagliatelle with bolognese sauce. While the sauce wasn't spectacular, the pasta was amazing. So amazing that I decided to get another pasta dish. My second dish was the Maccheroncelli with pesto, tomato, and proscuitto. It was as good as it sounded, and it didn't disappoint. My wife ordered meatballs with zucchini, and the meatballs were nice and tender, with juices to spare. My wife normally doesn't eat meatballs, but she really enjoyed these. I would definitely come here a little earlier, to try and beat the crowd, because there was one forming near the end of our meal here. It's a little out of the way, but well worth it.

A small helping from a split dish of risotto tortufo. The whole serving of any pasti is plenty of food to satisfy.

The very nicest people serving food with love. The couple who own this restaurant are so warm and happy to serve you. My colleagues with whom I visited Bologna are in love with this restaurant and make it a necessary first night when arriving in the city. We had antipasti Al Sangiovese customized for our party of six. We got an excellent wine recommendation (a corposo sangiovese), and she allowed us to order off menu a bit to split some truffle risotto. The dessert menu is full of delightful options. They don't speak much English, but they are great communicators through inflection in their Italian. Looking forward to when I can eat here again.

This spot is a bit out of the way from the center of town but only a 10 minute walk from the two towers. A little hard to find, but there is a sign on the outside so you shouldn't miss it once you're on the block. Inside was super dark and comfy. The host man came over with a hand-written menu on a chalk board and described each dish in fairly good English. We ended up ordering a pretty good spread and went to town on it. Highlights below; Giant tooby pasta with stuff in and on it. No idea what this was called but it was great! http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/2llHIV7Ro7Mi3elBvZcHCA?select=6lfEYH_Q_vHGCZynp24qOw#6lfEYH_Q_vHGCZynp24qOw The spaghetti Bolognese was perfect. It was the best sauce to date and a perfectly small portion for the richness. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/2llHIV7Ro7Mi3elBvZcHCA?select=b0FZduq8WxAcCzMgGO9nWA#b0FZduq8WxAcCzMgGO9nWA I normally HATE grappa. It's disgusting, no ifs, ands, or buts, BUT in Italy the stuff was magic. Here they had a homemade fennel grappa that tasted like fennel and not like moldy licorice candy. And it was on the house, even better. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/2llHIV7Ro7Mi3elBvZcHCA?select=1WLgTGftXSGP49t7OUJZJA#1WLgTGftXSGP49t7OUJZJA Overall it was a pretty nice meal with very nice staff. I would consider going back should I ever be in town again.

Bavarese di formaggio caprino con crema di funghi porcini e porri

Our best meal in Bologna... My wife started with the Bavarese di formaggio caprino con crema di funghi porcini e porri, a fresh goat cheese in a delicious porcini mushroom sauce. The cheese was cold, the sauce was warm, and the combination of temperature and taste created an explosion of flavor in your mouth! Our son went straight for the yardstick by which he measures Bologna's restaurants - the Tagliatelle al ragù - also known as the traditional Bolognese meat sauce. It was a good choice, this was the best ragù out of the three he has had so far. I opted for the macaroni with pesto, prosciutto, and a Sangiovese sauce...again a delicious pasta dish. For seconds, our son the carnivore went with the lamb chops - a bit dry and he ended up swapping chops for portions of the other two dishes with a bit of masterful negotiation. My choice, the scallopina alla suprema, was the best second. The topping of asparagus and Parmesan was delicious, and the thin, fried scallopina was immediately divided up amongst all three of us! My wife, who had an antipasti as a first, now went for a first as a second, and ordered the Strozzapreti del "Passatore", a pasta with peas and prosciutto. At this point, I was down for the count and ready to wobble out. Not so for my intrepid dining companions, who had to push the envelope with dessert. Our son chose the panna cota which was light and very tasty, and my wife the baked pears in hopes of gaining a little much-needed fiber. Both were again fantastic. Another full day of eating, done in one meal. Who says the Italians can't be efficient?

They didn't have any tables outside so we were seated inside. Service (3.5/5): No WiFi unfortunately which isn't great for an international traveler like me. Standard European service. Not terribly friendly and not terribly efficient but I would say they were a bit more attentive than the norm. They did hook us up with some complimentary limoncello shots which was a really nice touch. Ambiance (3.5/5): A little quieter since it's off the beaten path which I like. A pleasant, homey restaurant. Drinks (4.5/5): We shared a bottle of wine. And the aforementioned limoncello shots. Food (4/5): We went with their pasta for two deal where each person gets three different types of pasta that you choose from six or so options. I love getting a variety of dishes so this was a nice way to do it. Not huge portions given the price but still delicious. The dishes were served to us quickly and we got to try some pastas we had never heard of. Overall: When in Bologna, Osteria Broccaindosso makes for a fine choice. The pasta is terrific, and the portions/prices are perfect. The classic Bolognese dish, the ragu tagliatelle, was very good, but the standout was the black truffle tortelloni. Afterwards we received our mozzarella bites that includes mini mozzarella balls, basil, and tomatoes. This was a refreshing appetizer that was a great start to our eating experience. We then placed our order for our main course. I ordered the tagliatelle al ragu bolognese. Once the dish came out the owner of the restaurant asked if I would like parmesan and he sprinkled the perfect amount. This pasta was extremely delicious and I ate every last bite. I plan to order both of these dishes again in the future. Additionally, we did not order a dessert but the owner insisted that we try the tiramisu.
