Lauricella & Sons - Starting to make some preparations for repairs

They are "old school" and contemporary in their approach to any issues including structural damage, rotten wood, decaying piers and other challenges. They are well known in the Garden District, French Quarter, and throughout the city. The team was respectful and willing to explain any procedure used. I would not hesitate to use them again with complete confidence.

Dear Y'all, Today I am happy, but a little bit sad too…read more Today David and Dave Lauricella...AKA the Dynamic Duo...are putting the finishing touches to my house renovations. The sad bit is I won't be seeing them every day. They've just finished doing major repairs on my front porch, siding and ceilings. Until they started the repairs (caused by termite and water damage I didn't know I had), my porch had been held up by the hand of God. Then He handed it over to the Dynamic Duo to fix. It was almost a shame to put the siding back on over the studs and insulation because Lauricella and Son are seasoned craftsmen of the highest order. Oh, and my beautiful put-back-together-again, re-beautified front door! I could digress and go on about how delightful David and Dave are, or how they go out of their way to do what you want done, or how I gave them a key to my now beautiful front door when I was out of town, or how I never had to sweep up after them. Honest. Suffice it to say, I am thrilled to bits with their work and work ethic. Cheers, Kathleen Langan

STAY AWAY! Extremely sloppy, unprofessional, unscrupulous contractor. I even contacted an attorney…read moreregarding my experience with Turner's. I can't believe he's still operating. He did not follow through with his contract in leveling my house and repairing the foundation. In fact they ruined some of the beautiful custom masonry work on visible piers that had been done by slopping cement over it. I was green and renovating my first home and did not double check the work or ask for another opinion before paying him. He said the work was complete and I believed him. They covered unfinished/shoddy work with new siding. I made a big mistake in trusting Mr. Turner, a recommendation to use him, and the fact that I was paying thousands. Like other reviewers and stories I've heard about Turners work; it's terrible and botched. My house isn't level, thousands wasted, on top of him being personally unprofessional. RUN!

Now I'll have to hire someone else to finish the job. My floor joists were damaged by termites, so I needed to sister some new joists to the old ones. This work is straightforward, and they did an alright job. The problem is that there's one area with pipes around it. This was the problem area. Basically they left three of my joists attached to nothing. They're just barely on the support beam, and they're falling over time. I'm honestly amazed it hasn't collapsed. My guess is that this happened at the end of the work day, so that the workers were tired of being under an house, and that they were frustrated. But they did a bad job and then they walked away. Months later I had Turner come look at it. He didn't offer to fix it. Disappointing stuff.

The doors don't lock at this point. I'm reading this could be because of the wood being warped. Probably not the companies fault. BUT!, Ace Leveling left holes that fill with water every 6 feet all the way around the house. Now, as you can understand, my 85 year old mother-in-law can't get out there and fill all these holes. I'm 60 and 12 hours away. I can't do it either. Why this company didn't complete the job I'll never know. In hindsight, Ace would not have been hired if it was known they would leave the mess. Thanks Ace, nice going! There website says "We're committed to creating satisfied customers" That lie is at best a joke!

Ace House Leveling, LLC did excellent work on our house and it was a difficult job! Our house is a…read more130 year-old barge board Creole cottage that's raised but very close to the ground. The front original raised part of the house was mostly on the original delapidated piers whose footings weren't much wider than the piers and quite shallow and there's a recent two story addition to the back of the house that had been constructed on top of what had originally been a patio slab and woefully insufficient to bear the weight of the structure. Being ghosted by two other prominent shoring contractors after they scoped the job, Ace House Leveling came to the rescue. Nick, the company's co-owner, meticulously assessed the job and gave us a good low and high-end estimate and the final price stayed within. The crew of five guys worked diligently six days a week for three or four weeks, tunneling and demoing old peers, in the front and tunneling under and demoing cement slab in the back. they replaced old rotten sills and floor joists, excavated and poured cement into the new hefty reinforced footings, and set the new piers. Finally, they very skillfully and gently leveled the old house in a way that caused very little cosmetic damage to the walls. Crawling under the house once or twice to see this work in progress, I was blown away by the skill and fortitude of these guys to do this kind of hard, skillful work in such tight spaces. Now, not only do we have a house where we don't have to run a water hose during a drought to open the front door, but we can do some cosmetic work on the interior and exterior of the house that won't crack away and have to be redone each time the house settles a little bit one way or another. We're sitting on solid ground. Thank you, Ace House Leveling!

I won't work with them again. The work was shoddy…read more I hired them to repair some termite damage in my home. For how much I paid, I expected a high degree of service. That's not what I got. These workers don't seem to be trained. Which means they need quality supervision, and they weren't given that. The result is that I could have performed these repairs better myself. After they left, I had to fix some of what they did. It makes me mad to think of how careless their work was. Besides the shoddy work, they're also not great to work with on a personal level. They're friendly, so that's good. My issue is that while they were working on the original repairs, I realized that there was another small repair that I'd like them to make. So that was added to the project. Unfortunately, they didn't do what I asked them to do. Specifically, there's a damaged roof rafter in my attic that I asked them to replace. Instead of replacing it, they sistered another board to it. If that's what I had wanted, I would have done that myself for $20 rather than the $700 they charged. It was ridiculous. I agreed to that price because I expected them to have to support the roof while working. When I told them that this wasn't what I wanted, they didn't fix it or refund me. That's totally unacceptable. I won't work with this company again. Foolishly, I paid them midway through the job. I assumed they knew what they were doing, and that paying them sooner would be convenient for both of us. If I had realized how bad the work was, I would not have paid the second half until they did things correctly. Overall this was an expensive lesson for me. I have more criticisms, but you get the point. Find someone else.

Other BBB accredited companies who performed inspections took a little more time and all came within a pretty reasonable price range relative to each other. Yet Richard Earls Construction comes in 2.5 times higher with the brief look over? Sure seems like a cheap way to skim a couple hundred bucks off someone... I asked for someone to contact me about the quote but got nothing back.

Thankfully, I wasn't stuck with them for the whole project. I have experience in renovation and historical restoration, and am detail oriented, and had high hopes for a successful professional relationship. On the plus side, they were always responsive to my communications, and seemed to understand what needed to be done. On the minus side, I don't know where to begin. All of the work, except management, on our project was handled by sub-contactors, not direct employees of Pokorn. Adding that additional layer of management inflated the cost of the job significantly. Too many generals, not enough soldiers. Their subs are of varying quality. For example, one subcontractor framed for a new closet in a way that partially obstructed an adjacent door because of a measurement mistake on the architect's plans. The sub didn't think "Oh look. Something's not right. I should ask how to proceed". They just went ahead and built it, even though the drawn plans showed no obstruction, necessitating tearing out the mistake and rebuilding. They also put the subfloors down in the bathrooms before the plumbing drain work was done. The plans clearly showed the fixtures being relocated within the rooms. Something else to tear out. When they removed the subfloor I saw that the bathroom vent duct for the bathroom below had very obviously been crushed (stepped on at the joist), which is why the bathroom vent below had no air flow. If the subfloor hadn't needed to be torn out, this air flow problem could have been difficult to diagnose and expensive to fix later on. Somehow all the generals didn't notice the substandard work. All these blunders would be comical if they weren't so frustrating. Pokorn did correct their mistakes after I pointed them out and asked them to, which is the only reason they got 2 stars. I should not have to do this work: it's their responsibility. Read their contract carefully before signing. It is written in a way that keeps too much power in their hands. They are strict about expecting payment within 72 hours of their submitting an invoice, even if they've screwed up and not yet corrected the work being invoiced. If you're late in paying, they can immediately stop work and require an extra $500 to start up again. You can make the payment "under protest", but then have to trust that they will fix the issue. To their credit, they always did, but I was upset that I had to trust a company that was messing up left and right. Why should this even have to happen in the first place? As is pretty standard, they ask for periodic payments as work progresses. They are the sole determiners of when a phase is substantially completed, which is not unusual, but ask for payment at a point when other contactors I've worked with (and I) would have considered the phase only partially completed. These examples do not exhaust the deficiencies or problems experienced during the short time I employed Pokorn. Let the buyer beware.
